Shaped like a UFO, this Teochew delicacy is fast diminishing from the local hawker scene.
Amongst the handful of hawker and pasar malam stalls keeping this dish going, I reckon Fu Zhou Poh Hwa is the best of the lot.
I love that the outer crust remains dry and crisp even though you are having it sometime after. The inside is soft and pillowy and the filling is a good mix of prawns, minced meat and of course oysters!
Dab it with some of the chilli sauce that comes with it (I personally love McDonald's garlic chilli sauce on them) and you have the perfect teatime snack with a cup of teh!
When you are the front of the stall, you would see the surrounding tables have been packed with all the orders ready for pickup.
They are constantly preparing the next batch of oyster cake inside the stall non-stop, so you may have to wait longer if you didn’t preorder in advance.
However, if you just grabbing one piece like me. You should get it on the spot if they have enough.
I love the oyster cakes from Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake but I just wish that they didn’t put celery or coriander in it! Other than that it’s perfect and everything I want in a snack.
Glad that we didn’t need to wait or queue on a Saturday afternoon (around 2PM).
No doubt this is good but I still prefer the one at Teochew Meat Puff (Woodlands)…
Upsized oyster cake @ $2.80
There's a few places with this traditional dish and wanted to try them at different places. The one here only has oyster option but it comes with a small prawn in it. Tastes not bad but the seasoning of the filling can be slightly strongwr. The pastry is a bit too thick and can be crispier.
Overall tastes not bad but we prefer the Teochew Meat Puff at Woodlands.
Not too many places where you can find this traditional deep fried snack from Fuzhou. This stall is located at Jalan Besar Berseh Food Center. Be prepared to wait up to 30 minutes but you be given a buzzer to inform you when your order is ready.
I ordered the upsized version for $2.80 (normal $2.30). It came packed full of minced pork, yam, one large oyster the size of my thumb, two shrimps, chives and peanuts. If you like chilli, go for theirs which is somewhere between sweet and savoury. But remember to eat the oyster cake while it’s hot. It does not taste greasy and the juices from the ingredients packed into the snack comes oozing out of every bite.
Some say the Maxwell stall serves the best oyster cake in Singapore. I beg to differ. This is the one for me.
