Smallest portion alr
The veggies were alright, so was the fish. But the Assam is not strong enough. The flavours were generally there alr, but it's just somewhat weak. Plus it's very very oily
Smallest portion alr, just 5 prawns and nothing much else
Prawns were overcooked. Idk what's Indonesian but the aroma is like kamheong. Except made into the curry. Except that the curry is weak. When it cools down, you can hardly taste the spices
If you're going to be have a spice-ful sounding dish, why make it so weak? Plus there's a lot of oil, so it's clearly not for health reasons
Don't bother
Probably the version with the most obvious pork lard taste I've had. Unfortunately the wok hei and the fragrance of the garlic could have been more pronounced
As it is, it's a decent version that's quite well seasoned, both with salt and sugar
Homemade. It's not as sweet as some others I guess, but it's still quite sweet. Also there's not enough body
I had dinner at Chili Padi Nonya Restaurant on a Sunday night with my partner and her family.
Chili Padi has been a household name for Nonya cuisine and has long been a staple in Joo Chiat, the epicenter of Singapore’s Peranakan scene. The restaurant recently completed renovations, which explains their contemporary Nonya décor, furniture, and fittings. The ambience is modern and clean, yet retains its authentic Peranakan personality.
We ordered the chef-recommended Ngoh Hiang, Laksa Goreng, and Nonya Chap Chye, all of which were excellent. However, three dishes stood out as particularly special.
First was the Sotong Hitam. The portion was generous, and the squid ink blended with spices paired perfectly with the firm and springy squid. Secondly, the Bak Wan Kepeting stood out with its clean yet flavor-packed soup and soft, delicious meatball.
The highlight for me was the Buah Keluak gravy, a Nonya staple and their specialty. We chose the pork ribs option (they have chicken as well), and the ribs were cooked to perfection—soft and tender. The Buah Keluak sauce tasted authentic and had a unique flavor profile that is unparalleled in other cuisines.
I highly recommend Chili Padi if you are looking for an exceptional Nonya dining experience with friends and family.
This place was recommended by one of my foodie friends! While I don’t particularly like steamboat, I found myself really enjoying the food at this one, as the soup base (signature soup base) was tasty, the service was good, and the food we ordered came fairly quickly.
Would recommend this place; the prices were still fairly reasonable although just a little bit to the expensive side - we spent about $50/pax.

Char Siu & Roasted Pork Noodle
Type: Restaurant/steamboat
My family’s favourite place for steamboat! We usually get the fish porridge, which is so generous in sliced fish serving!
✔️Super tasty home-made broth
✔️Good quality ingredients - they hand make a number of ingredients there right at the store (sometimes you’ll get to see them making), love the fish and meat balls and various pastes (fish/prawn/etc)
✔️ Cooked food is good too, we love the fried brinjal here!
The downside is the food is pretty expensive! But we end up still coming back all the time because the food quality and taste makes it really worth it. Highly recommend!!!
My rating: 5/5!!!
