In business since 1940s, Yet Con is one of the few surviving heritage restaurants in Singapore🇸🇬, offering authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice along Purvis Street.

Looking for that old-school, traditional version which isn’t drenched in sauce? This is the one lor that allows the natural chicken flavours to shine through. However, it’s quite a pity that the rice was rather bland in flavour and lacked that aromatic fragrance I desire.

Yet Con dishes out no-fuss, straight to the point good Hainanese chicken rice ($20+ for three people), with Hainanese steamboat ($20+) (chicken broth and a variety of meats). Good chilli, good garlic ginger mix! Not the most affordable but I’ll bring my tourist friends here for a dose of local tastes!
(Clockwise from top left) Hainanese pork chop, white chicken, chap chye. The chicken was surprisingly mediocre.
It will be not bad of a fix if you just want a simple and affordable meal with your friends. The chicken rice was average. It is nothing special and neither is it bad. Though if only they could make the chicken a little more tender, that would be great.
The additional steamboat set ($20) we ordered was good; the seafood was fresh, the beef was tender but they could have been more generous with the quantity given.
The total bill sum up to be $52 for 4 people, thats pretty affordable but don't expect too much of a service there. You will have to ask for a steamboat set or they will just serve you chicken rice.
In the same street as Saveur and Manzoku is Yet Con 逸群. Their steamboats are kinda different — only one type of soup, and you choose to order beef or seafood platters ($10/plate), and add on veggies. Get the chicken (gizzards and all 🙂) and chicken rice too, and it'll be a super comforting meal.
Epitome of old-school, from the furniture and floor tiles, to the aged uncle expertly hacking down silky-skinned chickens on his thick wooden chopping board. Places like this shouldn't be allowed to disappear.
