Every good meal deserves a sweet ending, and @charliesgrill.com.sg serves a limited but well curated dessert menu. Due to us being super stuffed from the enormous entrées, we had to pass on ordering the House Made Brownie ($7.90++). Instead, we spilt a Belgian Chocolate Lava Cake ($7.90++), and a slice of Apple Crumble ($7.90++) between us.⠀
â €
While apple crumble isn’t exactly the same as apple pie due to the former having a crunchy crumbly topping as opposed to the flaky pie crust lid you get on an apple pie. Still, Charlie’s Apple Crumble feels plenty American to me with its sweet, comforting mix of spiced apple filling in a buttery pie crust and capped with a lid of crunchy cookie crumble. I was delighted to find that Charlie’s apple filling is slightly on the tart side, bringing a nuanced balance of sweet, tart and spicy from the cinnamon & vanilla. The only gripe I had was that the pie was served lukewarm instead of steaming hot. It was still decent, but I would’ve loved to see that luscious vanilla ice cream melting all over this slice of apple crumble.⠀

Thank you so much for the hospitality @charliesgrill.com.sg, and thank you @eatwithkeat for inviting me!

The Belgian Chocolate Lava Cake was very sweet, mainly due to the deluge of melted chocolate contained within the soft cake, but it’s manageable as long as you share it. Of course, a lava cake is simply incomplete without ice cream, so Charlie’s very generously serves every lava cake with two scoops of vanilla ice cream. This sweet frozen dairy treat provides a cold contrast to the heat of the gooey lava cake, and they mingle to form a rich, decadent dessert.⠀

@charliesgrill.com.sg have a massive menu that matches their mammoth portions, and if you’re in the mood for noods, prepare to be spoilt for choice. Out of the dozen, yes a FULL DOZEN, choices of pasta, we chose the Grilled Chicken Marinara ($14.90++). A whole heaping helping of spaghetti is tossed in a mouthwatering marinara that’s homemade, and garnished generously with grilled chicken chunks and cherry tomatoes.⠀
â €
I rather relished the homemade tomato marinara, as it was tasty & exceptionally well balanced. The natural tanginess of the tomato is balanced out by the sweetness of the sauce, and it is all salted superbly for maximal savouriness. The marinara is also gloriously garlicky, but I didn’t really notice any basil. Just like with every other dish, Charlie’s is incredibly generous with their protein portions, and there was an abundance of juicy grilled chicken in the pasta.⠀
â €
Charlie’s is the quintessential American diner: the food may not be revolutionary, but it is definitely delicious, hearty and supremely satisfying. The portions will fill the hole in your stomach, but the bill won’t burn a hole in your pocket.⠀

@charliesgrill.com.sg Surf & Turf will subvert your expectations. Instead of having steak & lobster or shrimp, they’ve replaced it with…chicken and fish. Yup, Charlie’s Surf & Turf ($18.90++) is the healthy version of the usually hearty & occasionally heart stopping land & sea combo.⠀
â €
A chargrilled chicken fillet teams up with a grilled fish fillet for a protein partnership that’ll get your bulk started strong. The fish fillet manages to retain an acceptably firm & flaky texture inside, while the chicken is seasoned sufficiently & is remarkably juicy. While the black pepper sauce both proteins are drenched in is sufficiently savoury, Charlie’s missed a prime opportunity to do a unique sauce specific to the Surf & Turf that suits both chicken & fish well, like a lemony herb butter.⠀
â €
Still, for two ponderous protein portions & two heaping helpings of your selected sides, just under twenty bucks is quite the steal. Thanks for having us @charliesgrill.com.sg, and thanks for the invite @eatwithkeat!

@charliesgrill.com.sg evokes some long buried memories of old steakhouses of yesteryear like Ponderosa & Sizzler, and that’s mainly due to the gargantuan portions of food. For the rather reasonable price of $28.90++, you can order a protein party in the form of Charlie’s Steak & Chick’n. A humongous Angus ribeye steak is grilled to your desired doneness, and partnered with an equally sizeable slab of chicken.⠀
â €
As expected of any decent Angus steak, the ribeye was tastefully tender and decently marbled with fat. It was simply but splendidly seasoned with salt & freshly ground black pepper, and that all any stellar steak needs to shine. The humongous hunk of chicken was perfectly grilled, retaining all of its juices & moisture while being evenly cooked all throughout. The black pepper sauce inundating the meats wasn’t strictly necessary, but it’s peppery, rich & savoury qualities were definitely beneficial to both majestic meats.⠀
â €
Each massive main comes with a choice of two sides, and you can pick from eight different options. As you can clearly see, Charlie’s is equally generous with the sides as they are with the meats. The mashed potatoes were buttery, smooth and a delightful way to load up on carbs. The steamed seasonal veggies needed some loving care, like a herb butter or something, but there was a whole garden full of them on the plate.⠀
â €
Truth be told, Charlie’s Steak & Chick’n is large enough for two grown adults to share, and even big eaters will find this to be a mammoth undertaking. Thanks again for the invite, @charliesgrill.com.sg & @eatwithkeat!
