Wanted to eat the claypot hokkien mee but it was closed. Was exploring around to explore this western stall which has a long history.
I ordered the crispy chicken ($8.90) and I like it that it is thinly battered and chicken was moist. They also have free tartar sauce for you to take so it is good alternative other than chilli and tomato which is rare in a hawker.
Toilet around the toilet was surprising clean too which is a first for a coffeeshop
Have tried Master Chippy for so many years now. The fish is nicely fried and not too oily but the star of the dish are the fries!
It's been a few years since I ate this fish & chips institution. I expected okay but the fish was really good! Fresh and plump. Conversely my sides were terrible. The mash tasted like those artificial ones and the rice was stupidly just plain white rice.
Value for money deal with Burpple. Service was good. The restaurant has more option as compared to the one in the Burpple app menu. Fish burger and grilled chicken priced at 8.80 each. But only $8.80 was paid.
Got the crispy boneless chicken and pacific dory. Food is amazing and portion is quite huge. With 1 for 1, more than worth it to eat here. Cons are that 1 for 1 options are abit limited and it's rather out of the way. Still worth it =)
Chips were well seasoned, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Fish was slightly under seasoned, but was battered well, without it being oily despite its crispiness.
Also had the chicken which was well flavoured. Portion sizes were good.
Would recommend you choose the fries over the other sides as those tasted best.
Using a stock photo due to the current COVID measure dine-in restrictions—I did a takeaway and ate in the car and didn't take any photos. Do note that takeaways are usually not allowed for Beyond users but exceptions were made due to the COVID regulations.
We ordered the Sea Bass ($15.90) fish and chips, which was their priciest main dish on their menu. They have a good price range from below $10. All fried dishes include 2 free sides, but I topped up for premium sides which were Truffle Fries ($3) and Pasta ($1.60).
Boy: Fish tastes fishy. Nothing special for the ordinary chips, the Truffle Fries are better. Coleslaw was bad. KFC coleslaw taste better.
Girl: I hardly slam an eatery like that, but the fish was absolutely disgusting. Definitely makes the list for Top 3 worst Bass I had in my life. They make me not wanna eat Sea Bass for a good while because the fishy flavor was puke-worthy. A lot of the fishiness also comes from the skin of the fish; I think it wasn't washed/ treated properly before cooking. It was really gross, fishy and soggy beneath the crispy batter. The only thing good about the meal was the fries. Pasta was subpar, not sure why it comes as a premium side.
Overall, if you wanted to give them a shot, I would recommend getting other dishes and NOT sea bass. The normal fish and chips are half the price and the reviews on them are at least decent.
Overall ratings
Food: 2/10
Price: 7/10 with Burpple (for other mains, not Sea Bass)
Service: 7/10
Ordered the Pacific Dory fish & chips ($7.90) and the portion is huge! Well battered and fried. I like that they also included some fried batter bits at the side! Mashed potatoes and cold slaw were meh. Tip: add the malted vinegar that they have at their sauce table! Gives the fish extra oomph.
I tried their Sea Bass fish & chips ($15.90) on a separate occasion and was really disappointed at the fish. Could tell it was frozen fish, tasteless and dry. I usually don’t like Dory but in this case, I suggest you save the 💰 and go for it instead of their other selections.
with burpple 1 for 1 this was a super good deal especially considering their really large portions (i was so filled and couldn’t finish the fries) and fish had thin crispy batter skin and inside was soft warm and flaky. ordered their standard dory because it was decent enough for me but there are other fish options too if you prefer tilapia or something. nice sides to choose from too, and free flow sauces like ketchup and chilli and some malt vinegar?
also tried their crispy chicken chop and actually had really nice crispy skin along with tender meat! i’m not the biggest fan of chicken so i prefer the fish but objectively it was good.
was in a kopitiam setting but luckily today wasn’t too hot so was great experience overall for this price point. would have tried their sides like sweet potato fries if i could, but was too full to
The Burpple one for one deal is very worth it - $7.80 for 2 servings and its huge. However the location is at a ulu coffee shop which can be hard to find if you don’t drive.
From Master Chippy
Famous lightly battered fish.
Delightful scoops of mash.
Signature slaw.
Come enjoy.
Formerly known as Mr. Fish & Chips in PoMo, this stall has since shifted to a quiet coffeeship hidden amongst HDB flats in Toa Payoh. Prices at $7.80 each, choose between their Lightly Battered Pacific Dory or Crispy Boneless Chicken Steak, accompanying two sides of chips, mash, rice or coleslaw. Burppler Xing Wei Chua recommends his standard order of Tilapia, who was "Glad to say that the fried fish still features a crisp beer-battered exterior; all that with the Tilapia still having its juices locked in and being flaky and sufficiently moist"

Nestled in a rather quiet (maybe just at night?) coffeeshop near Braddell MRT, you can't possibly miss this bright yellow stall😂 that's selling fish & chips and pastas. Pretty decent I must say but definitely not worth coming all the way down just to try it. Thanks to Burpple Beyond, we got 2 plates of Fish & Chips for the price of one YAYY!!!
Gut-Filling Coffee shop fish and chips! Although these are basa fillets (I.e nowhere as flaky as higher quality white fish like cod/haddock), you get good value for the portions. As an adult male on an empty stomach I am ashamed to say that I could not finish the fries and coleslaw. I had them once at POMO under the old moniker “Cafe Wok-Inn”. It’s the same good value in a coffeeshop setting. Hurry now whilst you get 1-for-1 with Burpple Beyond!
Was looking forward to trying this but was a little disappointed as the fish didn’t feel very fresh and wasn’t really served hot. Coleslaw and fries were pretty good though haha. Also, with 1 for 1 Burpple, it was really worth it. Can give it a try if you near the area.
Really good deal with the Burpple 1-for-1. You get to pick a main (battered fish, chicken chop etc) with 2 sides. There's an assortment of fries as well (sweet potato, truffle fries etc). I thought this was impressive for hawker fare, fish was juicy and I appreciated the little crunches of batter they offered at the side. Not to mention, staff was very friendly too.
Loved this fish and chip joint tucked in a corner of a coffee shop. Affordable, with the basic starting at $7.80 and the option to upgrade the fish/sides.
My partner and I both ordered the dory, with coleslaw/truffle fries and coleslaw/pasta as our sides and we enjoyed our meal thoroughly!
Have been eyeing the fish and chips from master chippy for a loooong time ever since it appeared on Burpplebeyond's 1 for 1 list! Made my way down to braddell just for this! It is situated in one of the HDB coffeeshop. Opted for the dory fish and chip (original price $7.8 per dish) along with sides french fries and mashed potato (other basic side options include rice and coleslaw). When the food was served, I was amazed. The portions are hugeeeee! Both fries and fish. And it was the first time I could not finish my fries. There is no fishy slimy taste in this fish and chips too! Friendly service from the staff here as well!👍🏻
Had been following this stall for quite a while — originally known as Cafe Wok Inn and subsequently as Mr. Fish & Chips at PoMo, they had since shifted out to Blk 125 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh ever since PoMo had closed for its revamp, and the stall had now recently re-opened its doors at Blk 206 Toa Payoh North under a new branding; now known as Master Chippy — a location that they had once been located in as Cafe Wok Inn.
Stuck to my standard order of the Tilapia for my Fish & Chips here — patrons can now pick between two sides, which I went for the Truffle Fries and Coleslaw. Glad to say that the fried fish still features a crisp beer-battered exterior; all that with the Tilapia still having its juices locked in and being flaky and sufficiently moist — pretty consistent standard from their days at PoMo when their operations had stabilised. Liked how each order also comes standard with crisp, fried crumbs of flour that are similar to the crunchy bits of fried batter that comes with the combo meals at Long John Silvers; fun to crunch on and provides a good break from the fish & chips. Truffle Fries are fairly decent; the generic fries are a little bit on the softer side here but it does come perfumed with an evident hint of truffle and shaved cheese over the top that further enhances those flavours, while the coleslaw comes served chilled; provides a refreshing crunch with a slightly milky hint of flavours in the mayo that it was mixed in.
Must say that they are one of the few establishments that are treating the pandemic really seriously — probably the only establishment I have encountered thus far that seals their dine-in cutlery (yes, metallic ones) in plastic wraps individually. Also recall that the couple running the stall to be very hospitable, friendly and passionate from their PoMo days — glad to have seen them expand their operations; pretty sure the residents around the area must be stoked for their return back here, considering how long a way they have come since moving out from here years ago!
