Himi Sardine Fragrant Napo Ramen® Risotto Set(¥1400)
A unique twist on the classic Napolitan spaghetti, but in ramen form. What an interesting concept!
Before serving the ramen, they offered a small tasting cup of clear fish and seaweed soup that was used for ramen. It had a subtle fishy taste and set the stage for the main event.
The redish broth was made using a combination of sardine soup stock and fresh tomato ketchup, resulting in a tangy and savoury profile. It had just the right balance and was truly comforting. The noodles were nicely cooked, springy, and al dente. The neatly sliced cha siu added a nice touch to the dish.
What sets this set apart is the option to customise your ramen experience. You can add soft-boiled egg and grated cheese to your ramen, creating a whole new dimension of flavours. And if that wasn't enough, you can pour the rice into the remaining soup and transform it into a delicious risotto-style dish. One set, multiple ways of enjoying it!

Oishii! I had an amazing Tempura meal at Kaneko-Hannosuke, and it might just be the best I've ever had. The tempura was freshly battered and fried to perfection. The taste was incredibly clean and not greasy at all. Each piece was light, crispy, and had a natural flavour that was simply delightful.
Conger Eel Tempura with Rice (¥1800), which included a variety of freshly fried tempura such as conger eel, shrimp, squid kakiage, chicken, pumpkin, maitake mushrooms, green pepper, and egg. It was served with a generous portion of rice, miso soup, and pickles. The only downside was that the tempura sauce with radish provided wasn't enough to satisfy my taste buds.
What I truly loved about this place were the free-flow small dishes that accompanied the meal. I couldn't get enough of the pickled radish, spicy salted citron-flavoured squid, and salmon & seasoned cod roe. They added an extra element of flavour and made the meal even more enjoyable to eat.

I managed to sneak a quick snap of the food before getting caught, as the store had a strict no-photography policy. They seemed to enjoy maintaining their air of mystery, much like finding a hidden treasure beneath the ocean. Locating the store was like solving a puzzle, with just a small signboards under a certain stair providing clues in the search. It was nestled within an apartment, so one had to be careful not to accidentally enter someone else's house. 😂 Happy hunting, folks! Google will be your best friend in locating this gem.
The journey and effort were well worth it. The Tonkatsu at Fukuyoshi was absolutely delicious. I tried their Hire Katsu Set (¥2030), which featured a smooth, tender, and lightly flavoured pork fillet encased in a perfectly crispy batter and crumb. The outer layer was juicy without being greasy, although the inner meat was slightly dry. Not to worry, though, as the accompanying sauce enhanced the rich taste and brought out the best in the meat. The set also included a generous portion of cabbage, tartar sauce, a bowl of rice, and a bowl of miso soup.
Please note that they only accept cash.

On a day of rest and relaxation, I decided to take a break from constant traveling and simply laze around. I booked a net cafe capsule hotel, where I could enjoy free-flowing curry rice, drinks, instant noodles, instant soup, and soft serve all day, every day 24/7. Yes, if you are hungry at 3 am, there is still food for you. It was the perfect opportunity to eat and sleep to my heart's content.
The cozy atmosphere of the hotel made for a pleasant stay, although I wished the air-conditioning could have been cooler. Aside from that, I found the price for a night's stay to be quite reasonable. The standard plan costs ¥3800, while the deluxe plan is priced at ¥4800. The hotel provided room wear and toiletries, ensuring a comfortable experience.

I had the Monkfish Liver (¥800) as well. It was a delightfully fatty and flavoursome treat, bursting with umami goodness.
To satisfy my craving, I also ordered the Natural Rock Oyster (¥1500). Though slightly smaller than the one I had at another place, it still delivered that oceanic freshness with a big slurp.
When in Niigata, it was highly recommended that I try Kiwami Sushi to savour the local taste of the freshest catches. After searching for a few places, I found Chiyo Sushi nearby, making it the perfect choice for me as I need to catch a train later. I made an early reservation to ensure a spot.
The Kiwami Sushi (¥3850) was a joyous experience. It consisted of a serving platter with 10 pieces of the finest sushi the establishment had to offer. The platter showcased local seasonal offerings, including uni, toro, and ikura. The content varied depending on the season and sea conditions, guaranteeing the freshest fish of the day.
Each nigiri sushi was meticulously crafted with warm vinegary rice. The seafood pieces were delicate and tantalising, leaving me wishing the master would continue serving me. 😂 Among them, the nanban shrimp stood out the most with its melty and sweet texture.

Towards the end of the meal, a large cup of hot green tea was served, providing a comforting and soothing conclusion.

I also decided to add a 50g plate of Kuroge Wagyu Beef (¥740) for a special treat, but it turned out to be rather ordinary. Perhaps it was just the particular cut I had. Lesson learned, stick to the regular set next time.
Yakiniku Like but in Japan. It felt familiar yet exciting to experience it in its country of origin. Had the Yakiniku All Star Set (¥1860), which included a delicious assortment of beef tongue, top loin, beef ribs, short plate sliced beef, and intestine.😍
I chose this set specifically because it came with free-flow rice, soup, and kimchi. Gotta fill up my belly, right? The meats were tender and cooked to perfection (of course lah, I'm the one who cooked mah), and the provided sauce enhanced their taste. The intestine was sinfully fatty and indulgent, and although it became a bit overwhelming to eat it on its own, the rice and free-flow plain water helped to balance it out. Famous Bandai curry rice located at the bustling bus interchange. Luckily, there was no queue when I arrived.🥰
The Mini Curry Rice (¥420) may be called "mini," but it certainly didn't look small to me. Served with a side of pickles, this unassuming yellowish dish packed a spicy punch. The curry had a creamy consistency, and the rice was piping hot. Despite its simple appearance, it was surprisingly flavourful.
True to their store name, I stood at a table to enjoy my meal and then cleared my own space. The eatery was bustling with people coming and going, creating a lively atmosphere after I left.
A quick and tastisfying meal before going for my 2nd dinner.😂

On another sake adventure during my stay in Niigata. This time, I went to a Sake Brewery, and spent a fascinating time delving into the art of sake production.
The Japanese Tour was complimentary, but I opted for the English Tour, which required a fee of ¥400. It was well worth it, as the guide explained the sake-making process with great clarity and detail in English.👍
To further immerse myself in the world of sake, I indulged in a Sake Tasting Session for 30 minutes, priced at a mere ¥1000. During this time, I had the opportunity to sample a delightful variety of 15 different types of sake, including their signature offerings. It was a wobbly experience, but I managed to keep my balance despite feeling a bit woozy. Oh, the dizzying delights of sake!🤣
Before bidding farewell to the brewery, I couldn't resist treating myself to a Sake Soft Cream (¥400)🍦. This creamy and sweet soft serve ice cream was infused with the unmistakable essence of sake. Its chillness provided a welcome respite from the scorching heat of the day.
Visiting Imayotsukasa Sake Brewery was an enlightening and enjoyable experience, offering a glimpse into the intricate world of sake production.

For dessert, I had the Mango Catalana (¥590), a chilled and frozen treat. While the sweet taste of mango was present, I must admit I expected a creamier and more velvety texture. It shouldn't be frozen in the first place, maybe more toward creamy and wobbly like creme brulee.
