1989 Classic is one of my favourite bakeries, and this cross section alone is probably enough to explain why because LOOK AT ALL DEM CHICKENS. SO GENEROUSLY STUFFED WOW.
The smoked chicken slices are pretty tender and soft, some are a tad dry but for the price and the serving I'm not complaining. I do think there could be more nacho cheese filling to offset the dryness a bit but generally really great! Super worth the price.

I don't eat otah because I don't eat seafood, so I would never have bought this bun on my own accord. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this bun! The otah doesnt have any fishy taste. It's really soft and nicely spiced. The other toppings on the bread also add layers of flavour to the bun. The bread is suuuper soft and fluffy! This bun has made me reconsider my stance on otah. Though I still wouldn't willingly eat it, I'd definitely give it a shot when paired with bread ๐

Ever since I had the coconut bun from Swee Heng 1989, no other coconut bun has come close to its place in my heart. Just look at the thiccc fillings within! And that strong pandan fragrance from the fluffy bread itself. So good!

๐ฌ: First time having an ondeh ondeh cake and this here really set the bar high - real soft cake, fragrant ondeh ondeh sponge layer and the coconut flakes which really captivated the entire ondeh ondeh essence ๐ฅต๐ Could've ate the entire cake on my own, just saying
Theyโre $1.70 each, and the mochi itself was flavoured! The buns were SOO soft and chewy buttt the fillings didnโt match up โน๏ธ
The ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐๐ก๐ข was a pass ๐ฅด I just couldnโt get past the artificial, sickly sweet apple filling. The honey flavoured mochi was not bad, but there was such a disappointing amount of it.
The ๐๐ก๐จ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ก๐ข with a brown sugar flavoured mochi filling faired a little better, but I wouldโve preferred a darker chocolate fudge to balance the sweet mochi.

I especially loved how the natural taste and sweetness of both the yam and pumpkin come through, theyโre substantial in thickness and flavour without being too sweet. However, I wish the ratio were heavier on the yam, as there was less of it, and their pumpkin was already the stronger flavour to begin with.
And I know how people feel against the flowy, almost liquid-y mochi, but personally, I think it makes sense. The bun itself is really chewy, and I think that having a chewy mochi inside to compete with it wouldnโt work. The flowy mochi adds another element of texture, that isnโt the conventional chewy mochi.

Despite the negligible amount of yam filling, I still enjoyed the I mean, I honestly didnโt even realise there was yam in it until I read the name of the bun properly after. The sweet potato is definitely the overriding flavour, in the form of smooth vibrant purple paste. As a sweet potato lover, I really didnโt have a reason to complain. While the sweetness of the filling is palatable, it could do with less, considering that the crumb topping was also quite sweet.

Bread was soft even after a day or so. Filling though, was a a bit sweet and could be more generous. Kinda disappointed that it tasted quite artificial and the mochi texture wasnโt distinct.
Tried Swee Hengโs version this time round! Theirs is much more cheesy than garlicky. It leans a lot more to the sweet side, while I prefer the more savoury sort. The garlic was too light to satisfy garlic bread cravings too, though theyโre pretty generous with the cream cheese. Bread was crunchy after a quick toast in the oven but unfortunately a tad bit dry.
The filling is a little too sweet for me tbh but the chiffon did help a little to balance out the sweetness! There are some taro chunks inside too which is a pleasant surprise ๐
Sweet chicken filling that are very generous as usual from Swee Heng. Fluffy bread with crispy top crust that mimicks the hk polo bun.
The white chunk of chicken inside was a little weird. Didn't really like the combo.
Hearty and perfectly garlicky! The bread is fresh and so sinfully soft!

This has a vibrant, colourful look, a buttery sweet flavour, and soft moist texture. Makes for a good dessert cake.

There wasn't any green tea taste at all, which was pretty disappointing given that the exterior of the bread was so brightly stained in green. Fortunately, there was an abundance of sweet, mushy red bean and the mochi was really sticky and chewy! I guess this could just be considered as a regular red bean mochi bun. ๐

I love purple ๐ ๐๐๐ Toasted it for a couple of mins & was rewarded with warm, slight crisp & fluffy bread~
Just look at that generous fillings!! The mochi added a chewy texture to the creamy purple sweet potato fillings. Too yummy!! ๐๐๐
Love this bakery for their unique flavours and decent prices. And I'm so glad that there're a few outlets around Singapore for me to get hold of them hehe.
โข Durian passion (top left): I'm not sure how this $1.60 goodness smells and tastes like the real deal, but it does. Durian flesh and milk custard sitting atop a fluffy white bun - must try if you're a durian lover!
โข Tuna & mushroom (top right): Generous amount of tuna in a seaweed-laced bun, super umami!
โข Chilli crab (bottom left): Spicy, but I'm not sure if it's real crab meat or just sardine HAHA
โข Polo egg bun (bottom right): Like an egg tart, but in a Polo bun instead of a tart. The custard filling is super eggy and fragrant, comparable to Tong Heng's egg tart tart filling. The bun is a little too thick on the sides, and I think it'll taste better if the polo crust at the bottom is toasted to make crunchy prior to eating.
