The matcha ice cream served at the end of the meal was delightful, especially when served in an icy cold frosty bowl.
Saboten Twin Special Set ($52) offers great value for two people who want to try a variety! The platter consists of a piece of Pork Loin (M)(100g) Katsu, 2 pieces of Fried Shrimp, 2 pieces of Crab Cream Croquette, 1 piece of Cheese Tenderloin, Chilled Cabbge, Lemon Wedge, Tartar sauce and 2 Radish Ponzu Dipping sauces. The set also includes a pair of katsu sets, each consisting of 100% Uonuma Koshihikari Rice, Miso Soup, Chawanmushi, Chilled Cabbage, Sesame, Pickles, and Ice Cream. Plus, there are free refills for rice, miso soup, and cabbage.
Pork loin was overall juicy, tender, not too oily, had a thick layer of white fats, and had a nice crispy breaded crumb exterior. However, the most inner core may be a tad dry and aged. But when eaten with the savoury umami homemade tonkatsu sauce, it's pure ecstasy. If tonkatsu sauce is not your favourite, there is still tartar sauce and radish ponzu dipping. Crab cream croquette was creamy and piping hot, exploding with flavour when you bite into it. Fried shrimp were long and tastisfyingly crunchy, with clean-tasting oil that enhances the flavour. Cheese tenderloin stood out the most, oozing with a great cheesy pull. Its soft, chewy yet creamy texture is simply awesome.

Shredded cabbage was fresh and evenly shredded, perfect to pair with goma dressing. Chawanmushi was smooth, wobbly, and packed with umami flavour. Miso soup was hearty and savoury. The matcha ice cream served at the end of the meal was delightful, especially when served in an icy cold frosty bowl.
Iced Green Tea ($2.20) is refillable. If you're dining alone, consider getting their Loin Katsu Set (Medium) for $23, which includes a piece of pork loin katsu along with the katsu set for a fulfilling meal.

You can always count on @sabotensg for good tonkatsu π I especially liked the cheese filled ones, if only they had a set with all cheese instead of half half!
Under gozen set meal, dessert (ice cream) can be extra change (80 cents) such as yuzu, chocolate and vanilla π
Loin Katsu (Pork) Gozen (L Size) ($25.50) (150g)
I didn't expected that their L Size could be shared with people for 3 Pax. But the outer skin's breadcrumbs on their Loin Katsu were quite crunchy and crispy when you bite on first tries. It usually makes people want more & more if their breadcrumbs on the outer skin are up to the standard. Their Loin Katsu (4/5) were quite not hard and chewy texture(just nice) include their fat attached on the Loin (I seldom saw that) but they overcooked the meat, then it turned hard and hard to chew.
Radish ponzu dipping was waterish and moist (4.5/5) include yuzu sauce with radish shave but good for dipping fried food as it is sour and you don't feel oily aftertaste.
It depends on the gozen set meal if you order special menu, they provide 3 different types of sauces like tartar sauce, radish ponzu dipping and tonkatsu sauce by default. Order normal menu, only radish ponzu dipping and tonkatsu sauce.
tonkatsu sauce mixed with black & White sesame (4.5/5) was quite thick and smooth texture with sour plum sauce but but good for dipping fried food as it is sour and you don't feel oily aftertaste.
Twin Special Gozen ($50) overall: 4.5/5
- Pork Loin Katsu (M Size) (4/5)
Like the set that we ordered above and in the end my parent didn't eat much, and I was the one who managed to eat finish (by right I cannot eat too much oily food but occasionally to breakthrough the diet).
- Fried Shrimp x2 (3.5/5)
Hmmm the breadcrumbs were quite too much, and the prawn was quite thin in size but was fresh and crunchy.
- Crab Cream Croquette x2 (4/5)
It's good and crispy to the exten, but the cream was quite smooth and thick but good thing that they made the size in mini.
- Cheese Tenderloin Γ1 (4/5)
My parents really like this, and my dad especially liked to eat cheese with pork even though his stomach didn't like dairy products too much. I didnβt get to try this. :")
All the gozen set meal included Japanese rice, miso soup, sliced cabbage, chawanmushi (steamed egg) included corn, chicken, egg and etc, pickles x2 and dessert (ice cream - green tea by default, the rest of flavour such as yuzu, chocolate and vanilla extra change 80 cents)*
Great food! Well fried, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside with free flow cabbage and attentive staff. Will definitely visit again!
Dreaming of this right now π€€. Saboten has always been my go-to place for my katsu cravings ever since I tasted it. The Loin Katsu Gozen ($24.90++ for large) is my usual order. Pork is very tender and the ratio of the meat and fat is so good that it melts in the mouth! Breading is crispy, good to dip in the sesame/katsu sauce.
This set comes with the usual refillable cabbage, rice, and miso soup. Love the chawanmushi and the matcha ice cream that comes with the set too.
Saddened by the news though that 100am branch has closed since Iβve frequented this more than the other branches.
Their dessert as part of the set was Matcha Icecream, and it's quite soft in the middle, and a good ending to the entire meal.
Not forgetting the cabbage that was really fresh, and paired well with the sesame sauce! You also get to grind your own sesame seeds to mix with their Tonkatsu sauce π€€.
Salmon Katsu was alright, nothing much to shout about imo - just go for the Tenderloin Katsu! I can't eat shrimp but seems like it's not bad from my dining partner!
Loved their Cheese Tenderloin - the cheese was so oozy, and I loved that the cheese wasn't just stretchy, but also strong in flavour! The meat was also really well-coated with the batter, which was v crispy as well.
Twin Tenderloin Gozen ($54++) (2 pax worth)
This platter comes with Tenderloin Katsu, Fried Shrimp (2pc), Half Salmon Katsu, Cheese Tenderloin, Radish Ponzu Dipping.
It also comes with 2 sets of Japanese Rice, Miso Soup, Chawamushi, Cabbage, Pickles, and Dessert.
* Free refill for Rice, Miso soup and cabbage
Was really impressed by their Tenderloin Katsu!! Took a bite when it was still hot, and it wasn't just soft and tender, it was juicy as well!! It already isn't easy to find Tonkatsu that's tender, and yet this was juicy π.
Tbh really one of the better Tonkatsu out there, compared to many of the past Tonkatsu I've tried. Definitely worth a try imo, and really just go for their Tenderloin Katsu!
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
This ($45) has pork loin katsu, fried shrimps, crab cream croquettes and cheese katsu. This set includes rice, miso soup, chawanmushi, cabbage and iced/hot green tea. I liked how everything was crispy and good but the pork loin katsu was a bit too tough for my liking.
Perfect tonkatsu π
I used to switch between Saboten and Tonkichi but over the years, the standard at Tonkichi has dropped which makes Saboten the clear winner here.
I had the Kurobuta Special Set (S$30++) which is part of its US Kurobuta menu available till 30th April. The set comprised of prawn, a half-sized loin katsu, a mini hire katsu and a crab croquette as well as cabbage, chawanmushi, miso soup, pickles, rice and ice-cream. Pretty worth it!
Each of the fried elements really stood out. Inside its crispy exterior was uniform juiciness throughout the pork. I was just utterly impressed with my meal.
A good lunch with the colleagues fuels us on for the rest of the work week!
