More Reviews of good food at Plain Vanilla (Tiong Bahru)

Boss bought staff 2 boxes of sweets! So pretty I almost couldn’t bare to eat them!

$22 poached eggs, San Marzano tomatoes, avocado 🥑, pine nuts, yellow frisee salad, buttered sourdough.

Looking for an aesthetic cafe located at the trendy Tiong Bahru district? Plain Vanilla might just be what you are looking for!

Earthy tones with bright natural lighting creates a cosy ambience for you to enjoy a nice selection of drinks, savoury mains and delicious pastries.

During my visit to the cafe, there were only seats available at the Alfresco dining section. However, the fans did the job in making the tropical Singapore heat bearable.

The waiting time for the dishes ranged from 15-30 minutes and I took the opportunity to browse the items displayed at the retail store of the Alfresco dining section while waiting for the food to be served. The staff who attended to my family and I were attentive and polite, which helped to elevate our experience in this cosy cafe.

🍝 Chicken Pesto Orecchiette | S$24 | 3/5 ⭐️
- Sun-dried tomato paste and basil pesto made the dish savoury but the tough chicken breast brought the rating of this dish down to 3/5.

🍞 Mixed Berries French Toast | S$18 | 3/5 ⭐️
- Assortment of fruits served with the French toast were fresh but there’s nothing extraordinary about the dish.

🍳 Eggs Benedict | S$22 | 4/5 ⭐️
- Poached egg was done to perfection, prosciutto was of good quality. The different elements of this dish came together nicely and made it the best main dish we tried.

🧁 Strawberry White Choc Cupcake | S$4.20 | 4/5 ⭐️
- The sweet white chocolate frosting, slightly dense yet moist vanilla cake and fresh strawberry was a killer combination.

🧁 Cookies & Cream Cupcake | S$4.20 | 2/5 ⭐️
- Cookies & Cream frosting was alright but the chocolate cookie cake was slightly dry and plain.

☕️ Flat White | S$5 | 4/5 ⭐️
- As I prefer my coffee to be milky and slightly sweet, this flat white definitely hit the spot!

Will I return? - Yes! I look forward to bringing my friends to Plain Vanilla to try more flavours of cupcakes, tarts and other pastries accompanied with great coffee! 🤩

Vanilla bean icing was so creamy and really bursting with vanilla flavour. It was funny because the staff recommended this as a classic that was “not too sweet”, but I personally already thought it was sweet enough for me. The sweetness was however, neutralised by the light and fluffy textured cupcake which was pleasantly soft with every bite. Now I know why PV cupcakes are so highly raved about!

Light and fluffy textured cupcake with a sweet white chocolate icing. This is one for the sweet toothed! A small portion of the cupcake was filled with strawberry jam, which added another layer of sweetness (plus a tinge of sourness) to the dessert.

Pretty smooth green tea latte, just wished it was slightly stronger considering how the ice made the drink diluted.

Decent cup of mocha that was not too sweet, nor strong. Perhaps because it was diluted by the ice. The sustainable package is great, but the absence of a straw to stir the drink might have also caused the coffee taste to be less apparent as desired.

$5- The choco is not very strong, i prefer strong choco. It does not taste as good as expected. Very expensive

💸: $4.20

💬: Had my doubts about these, but they were so cute I couldn't resist and I'm glad I didn't because these little baby muffins were so good!!!!!!
The muffin bites were dense (but not overly so) and buttery - pair that with the fragrant cinnamon sugar and it was 🥰🥰🥰

💸: $7

💬: high price tag for such an itty bitty tart, but this was so good so imma shut up and hand my card over....
very lemony and smooth, but my colleagues and I found the eggy taste too overpowering at times, so if you hate that, get a cupcake instead!

At $4.50/piece, this is definitely not cheap. However, the incredibly huge size and premium quality ingredients definitely justify the premium price point. The vanilla malt custard was filled with sexy black pods. There was a thicccc dollop of custard within the doughnut, with a dough-to-custard ratio of 3-7 (yes, extremely custardyyy!!) it’s topped with a tiny vanilla biscuit, similar to the ones you find on their vanilla bean cupcakes!

One of those cupcakes that you swore you were only gonna have one more bite, but end up eating the whole thing. PVB’s 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙠 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙃𝙖𝙯𝙚𝙡𝙣𝙪𝙩 (~$4.20) still tasted damn good after 2 days, and I’m not sure what kinda black magic is this.🧁

Hazelnut icing sugar atop the moist cocoa cupcake didn’t take the thin grainy frosting texture of typical cupcakes, but rather a dense form. I’m the type of person that ditches frosting, but not here: it’s THAT good. 😝

Ig @goodfomood

I was expecting a much sour taste but it wasn’t. It is actually a black tea with mixed summer berries, rather an unsweetened tea.

If you want some refreshing bite then grab this one. A handmade butter tart shell filled with smooth lemon curd and finished with fresh lemon zest.

Plain Vanilla is a great place to grab some of their dessert and chill.

A butter pastry base folded to encase a filling of blueberries, wild strawberries, raspberries, red currants and blackberries.

I find their frosting slightly too sweet, yet at the same time, sinfully delicious. Like you just want to sneak a pinch of frosting with every bit of cake.
Pictured here (clockwise) are the salted caramel, strawberry shortcake, red velvet and chocolate hazelnut.
Salted caramel was buttery and salty - not my favourite flavour profile, but if you like salted caramel, this is for you.
Strawberry shortcake was a crowd pleaser - unassuming, with a light sponge, vanilla frosting and sweet strawberries.
Red velvet was a classic - red coloured chocolate cake base with vanilla frosting.
Chocolate hazelnut was adventurous, yet not too bizarre - a chocolate cake base, topped with a nutty milk chocolate frosting.
My top 2 from this array would be the strawberry shortcake and chocolate hazelnut.

Price: $3.90 each

This is actually almond butter with raspberry rose jam, not pb. I did like the almond butter, which was quite pleasant and didn’t feel heaty. However it’s pricey considering that it’s just spreads on thin white toast. The coffee is not outstanding, but it’s still decent!

That classic you can’t miss.
The classic that perhaps only PV is able to elevate with the use of quality ingredients (& taste!) only gripe would be the slightly frozen/icy whipped cream (it’s my bad to have it refrigerated). I recall the last time I didn’t refrigerate my cupcakes, they were incredibly fluffy and creamy (way nicer then cold cuppies and slightly icy-hard cream!)

Love how PV is true to their philosophy, serving up premium and fresh cuppies every single day, even in times of circuit breaker where baking supplies and ingredients are harder to get (?) Within the cuppie sits many chocolate chips and FRESH, PULPY banana slices. The premium they charge is justified, my tummy is so satisfied 🤗

Oh, not-so-plain creation from Plain Vanilla. A classic with not-so-classic taste, elevated with quality ingredients. Of course, comes topped with a quarter piece of Oreo!
