A warm and comforting bowl of pho with beef brisket. Don’t forget to add in some spice, lime and chili that provided separately to enhance the taste of the soup.

This Vietnamese restaurant is hidden at the side of Fook Hai Building facing Upper Hokien Street. Yet it doesn’t stop many people who work around coming here for their lunch.

The waiting time gets a bit longer during this lunch peak period, considering they have only a few people working at the kitchen.

The fresh hand roll was served first, which is good enough to fill our tummy while waiting for our pho.

Stuffed with veggie, shrimp and beef. Dipping it to the sauce and you will enjoy much of it.

Located in the nondescript Fook Hai Building, which has seen better days, lies a Vietnamese eatery that was recommended by a fellow foodie, and it was the perfect moment for me to be enjoying a hot bowl of beef pho during a cool rainy evening. Broth was very beefy and herbaceous, unlike the usual clean clear broth as this bowl of pho might be inspired from another region in Vietnam. Bun thit nuong was excellent too if you are craving for dry noodles as the bone-in pork was nicely marinated but special mention goes to the deep fried spring rolls which were made in house and filled with a chock full of ingredients.

However, the star of the show for me was the piping hot Spring Rolls ($6.90 for 3pcs). Damn shiok. A must-try, the deep-fried appetizer was insanely crispy and flaky perfection. The netted rice paper crust really slaps. What’s more, the juicy meat filling made with ground meat, mushrooms, carrot and vermicelli was so well-seasoned. Awesome even without the sauce.

Located at Fook Hai Building, hidden in an unassuming corner behind Hong Lim, May Pho Culture served some great pho and superb fried spring rolls.

So easy to love with its delicately savoury broth, the Beef Tenderloin Pho ($17.90) was ideal for our current rainy weather. Not thirst-inducing at all, the soup had a very pleasant, comforting herbaceous flavour. Flavourful yet clean-tasting. The thin slices of tenderloin were also exceedingly tender and the slurpy blanched rice noodles were perfectly cooked. There were plenty of crunchy beansprouts as well as onion slices in the mix, adding to the sweetness of the already solid bowl of pho. And it felt even more authentic with the fresh herb basket on the side.

May Pho Culture is our latest go-to joint for Vietnamese food.

Their beef phos are delicious and flavourful but their crispy spring rolls are even better! The exterior resembles a spider web and is shattering crisp. The interior minced meat filling is juicy and savoury. For an additional spicy tangy kick, I highly recommend pairing this with the spicy dip that comes on the side!
