More Reviews of good food at Kopi Tiam (Swissotel The Stamford)

The fish was fresh and the soup was very light in flavours and yet tasty too. They even have candles to keep the fish hot allowing us to enjoy it for a longer period of time.

The Hakka Roast Pork Belly was crispy and slightly salty. It went well with rice and the sweet chilli that came with it too.

The beef was tender and very rich in flavour. This was pretty good but didn’t stand out much.

Good but not great hawker food in aircon environment at 3-4x hawker prices. Not recommended unless you have Entertainer 1-for-1 offer.

They offered a choice of white or black but you cannot have mix. So I went for the black and I didn’t regret it. It was a huuuge plate of steaming hot carrot cake and yes I couldn’t finish it. But I enjoyed the trying very much. The eggs used were really generous. Got prawns too, but the quality of this carrot cake was so good that they were hardly the highlight. Carrot cake pcs were big and smooth and soft. So good. It was already slightly spicy on its own but in case you need more kick, they provided sambal chili by the side. Seasoning was just right, with a hint of sweetness of the black sauce. Did I mention this was free with Burpple Beyond? I need to stop gushing.

I usually encountered very flavorful beef rendang that were on the tough side. This was strangely the opposite. The tenderness of the meat was beyond dispute, but it didn’t have the usual strong flavors I associate with rendang. Still, it was a very good dish and both quality and quantity was nothing to sneeze at.

This was a huge bowl of Laksa so it was quite worth it. Prawns were deveined and bouncy. Gravy was on the watery side but very flavorful. I enjoyed the sambal chili. Quite fiery. Instead of hard boiled egg, there were slices of chicken breast. I don’t eat chicken breast. I need my egg.

Service was great. I was addressed as “Madam” in every sentence and smiles were aplenty. Food came quickly, but it was like 2pm and not at all crowded. Warm water was free. Nice view.

Free with Burpple Beyond. The chicken drumstick was deboned and amazingly tender. Rice was fragrant and delicious but a bit too soft for my liking. It was nice big bowl and I finished every grain. Sauces were definitely too little. Chili also not spicy enough. Soup was ok.

The chicken rice set came in a battered old looking tray. Maybe it was their concept, but the tray looked a bit dirty and that was a definite minus in my book.

Extremely extravagant I know but so blessed to be given a lunch treat here.

The laksa is really very aromatic save for the poached chicken breast which carried a “ frozen chicken “ smell .

I particularly enjoyed the satay which had a good balance of sweet and savoury and the peanut sauce which has a darker tinge and delightful roasted peanut aroma.

The black carrot cake was probably the most memorable for me . Unlike carrot cakes which are typically oily and cooked till brittle outside , this carrot cake came in large chunks which were moist and soft and the serving of eggs was extremely generous . My only gripe was that it could be less salty.

A nice place to meet for a satisfying local treat - save for the prices 🤣

Local hawker’s favourite that’s offered in a more posh restaurant at Raffles City. The plus point has to be the unparalleled views of Marina Floating Platform. Typically love ordering anything that’s Salted Egg flavoured. Here you go if you’re looking for Salted Egg Yolk Calamari.

The food is ok, but no better than at Kopitiam food courts. Service is kind of slow, and without a single smile. Without the Entertainer 1-for-1 offer, the cost would have been unjustified. If you want to sample local food in an aircon environment, the Straits Kitchen at the Hyatt is much better!

Situated in Swissotel, I guess not-so-local prices are expected in this literally, atas, Kopi Tiam. Food was good though, rich beef rendang and salted egg prawns which were fried and prepared the local way, just the way I like it. Kudos to the chefs for preparing the beef rendang in such a way that the beef was still tender and easy to chew on. Preparation was SLOW though, like, really slow, which is something the management has to work on because it has happened 3 of the 3 times I visisted Kopi Tiam. So do be prepared to wait during peak periods.

Now this is a plate that I enjoy. I won't compare this with the nasi lemak specialists all around the island, but it could withstand most competition with enough coconut fragrance in its rice. Rice isn't light, isn't fluffy, but I like that it's well coated with coconut milk.
.
This plate of nasi lemak is paired with curry chicken ($18++ including the nasi lemak) or beef rendang ($20++), together with achar, ikan bills, peanuts, and a nicely fried whole egg. I like the beef rendang too, which should have been slow cooked since the fragrance of all the spices and coconut milk is evident within the meat.
.
I would come back again for this, definitely. Given that there's 50% off with Amex Platinum cards, $10++ for this plate of nasi lemak (with beef rendang!) in such an environment is a steal.

My friend has a craving for hokkien mee, and suggested Kopi Tiam at Swissotel. I was like.. "Do you really need to go somewhere so expensive for Hokkien Mee?" Turns out that there's 50% off for 2 person dining using American Express Platinum Card, so this plate costs $9++. Not exactly cheap, but considering that it's in a cosy air conditioned restaurant with a seat by the window, and comfortable enough for us to spend 2 hours there, it's money very well-spent.
🔸
Now the other question is - is Hokkien Mee worth less than a plate of pasta? A plate of hokkien mee consists of two types of noodles: one eggy and one white (rice flour), stir fried with pork, prawns and squid. The magic is in the stock, which contains the essence of the seafood and pork ingredients.
🔸
A plate of Italian seafood marinara also contains seafood, but in tomato gravy instead of the hokkien mee seafood stock. We pay $20 upwards for Italian pasta, and it now seems that we are getting tremendous value paying only $3 to $4 for our Hokkien mee.

From 7 May to 6 June, #SwissotelTheStamford #KopiTiam presents a delicious seafood galore.

Must-tries include the Brown Clams in a savoury superior stock ($18) and the Black Grouper ($9/100grams) served in a fermented chilli bean sauce.
