More Reviews of good food at Katong Mei Wei

Katong Shopping Centre is no stranger to foodies, thanks to the recent buzz over the battle of banana pies (PSA: Auntie Peng now has a second outlet in the same building!).

Before the pie wars, the go-to spot was Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice, now rebranded as Katong Mei Wei. While the chicken is no longer boneless by default (unsure if you can still request it), soup refills and self-service achar are also a thing of the past.

That said, the chicken remains tender and flavorful, and the chilli still delivers a satisfying spicy kick. A familiar classic, slightly updated.

7.70 for the standard set which comes with the chicken, rice, soup and archa.
love the fried garlic and also how tender the chicken was. portion was v worth the price

Probably one of the most famous chicken rice shop in Singapore, Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice in Katong Shopping Centre gathers a huge crowd who are willing to queue to have our national dish. We decided to brave the queue and got our spread in about 30 mins.

We got the mixture chicken set for 4 ($26) which came in a huge plate. Both roasted chicken and steamed chicken were doused in a sweet savoury sauce and topped with loads of fried garlic. I must say that their quality of chicken still remained rather high, as the chicken was moist, flavourful and most importantly fresh. The skin of the roasted chicken was the best, as there was the added caramelised flavour of rendered fat.

The chicken rice came with 2 different kind of soups: a black herbal one and a standard cabbage soup. The black herbal one contains a chicken feet, and the herbal flavour was quite mild. The cabbage soup was flavourful but abit too peppery for my liking. The achar that came with the set was delightful due to the large chunks of seasoned pineapple that were good appetizers!

Actually for the portion of meat given, it's actually quite worth it. The only complaint should be the rice itself, as it wasn't as flavourful as we wanted it to be. Oh and their chilli deserves a shout out too, as it was not too spicy, but had the perfect amount of vinegar and garlic to pair with the savoury chicken ๐Ÿ˜

Everyone knows they are one of the more popular chicken rice in SG and they now have an electronic queue number system where diners can place orders at the kiosk machine.

I ordered a quarter chicken with a mix of roasted and steamed chicken. The steamed chicken is tender and juicy with jelly-like skin while the roasted chicken is also succulent and more flavourful with nice crisp skin. It tasted even more delicious with the umami soy sauce and fried garlic bits. Each order also comes with free-flow soup and achar that makes it a fulfilling and hearty meal ใ€‹$13.30 + $1 Rice

This is definitely not the first or last time I am going to write about Katong Mei Wei chicken rice.

Located in a corner of the basement of Katong Shopping Centre, Mei Wei attracts foodies from all over Singapore for their chicken rice. This is one of my favourite Hainanese chicken rice because the poached chicken is always consistently good and the soy sauce drizzled over it is very savoury and perfect with rice. The chilli packs a good amount of heat and garlic and I love that they come with achar and boiled soups.

Yes, it's a little pricey but that's because you get a real complete meal with the achar and soups on the side. The soups are real proper boiler soups and I really love their cabbage chicken feet soup or winter melon pork rib soups. You do get chunks of pork ribs and chicken feet in the soup - these guys are definitely not playing around with their soups.

Mei Wei has since been taken over by their 2nd G owner. He has cut down on queueing and waiting time by instituting a proper queue system and collection system. The only downside is that the achar and soups no longer appear to be free flow and they are a lot stinger with their condiments which you can no longer help yourself to!

Formerly known as Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice since their founding in 1989, 2nd-generation owner (and actor/dancer) Soki Wu carries on the family legacy serving fresh, boneless, and delicious chicken rice.
.
Both versions of their chicken, poached and roasted, fare much better because of the robust gravy, lending meaty salty savoury sweet flavour to the freshness of the tender chicken. Enhanced with crispy fried garlic chips with vegetal salty savoury spice notes.
.
The rice tends towards dry and fluffy, with mild grainy sweet flavour. But for this price, you also get a large bowl of double-boiled vegetable soup, filled with chunks of soft stewed cabbage and carrots with vegetal sweet earthy peppery spice flavour.
.
Also included is a unlimited serving of fresh crunchy juicy achar (cucumbers, red onions, pineapple, red chili) with bright vegetal tangy sour sweet spicy flavour, shiok.

So bad, perhaps because it's breast meat, perhaps because it's takeaway. It's missing their iconic soup. They've also worked on their branding, hence the new box. There are still some elements I can recognise, such as the garnish.

Had not been here for a very long time, found out, they now have a new name, previously it was only known as delicious boneless chicken rice.

Although name has change, the taste is still the same, just as good as always, and this is easily in my top 5 chicken rice i ever had.

Chicken is soft and tender, their sauce is damn shiok, so flavourful and have garlic bits to give it a strong garlicky taste.

Complimentary bowl of peanut soup was provided with some chicken bits.

Chilli was quite good, but the star is always the chicken and its garlicky sauce.

the free soup and chilli were great. but the chicken, rice and vegetables were pretty average. honestly i donโ€™t see myself traveling all the way to katong for this. but if i stayed nearby, i wouldnโ€™t have mind.

I came here quite frequent not purely for their Chicken Rice. I like the fact that it comes with free-flow achar and I think not many Chicken Rice stalls can match with their peppery cabbage soup!

Came here for a weekday lunch because it is near-impossible to find a seat for lunch on weekends! The stall is famous for their yellowish chicken rice, which is really fragrant, and surprisingly not as greasy as it looks! We got the half chicken set, which comes with a good mix of fat and lean pieces. We were surprised that the chicken meat was not really boneless as the stall's name suggested, so perhaps that needs to be requested for when placing your order. The fried garlic on top of the chicken was awesome to complement the chicken meat, although the gravy might be a little on the saltier end.

The set was also good value for money, as it also came with achar, which is a pretty unique appetizer for chicken rice. In addition, you get a big bowl of lotus root soup, although it can be a little too salty to end your meal with, and we thought the stall's cabbage soup (served when we went previously) was much nicer.

Taste: 6/10
Maybe because we did not get to order the white chicken but the roasted chicken was pretty okay, not a fan of the rice, could be more flavorful and more cooked.

Finally tried the famed tiktok chicken rice located at the basement of Katong Shopping Centre. This is a v challenging trip from the tight parking lots to the minimal seating and the impolite lunchtime crowd all vying for seats but the chicken rice was worth the visit. Ordered both types of chicken to make the best of the trip. White was very tender and succulent while the roasted has a nicer skin with just a mildly drier meat. Also loved that we got both the lotus and cabbage soups and many rounds of achar. Surprisingly, the soups were chock full of ingredients not just briny water. Prices are definitely on the pricier side but I guess thatโ€™s to make up for the freeflow freebies.

Amazingly huge portions and everything was oversized And good :). Steamed chicken tender and plump, rice not oily. Complimentary soup came with ridiculous amount of cabbage and meat. Chicken feet with lotus soup. Both soups were on point and comforting on a cool rainy day. Beansprouts largest I have seen and chicken innards too. Free flow achar and I enjoyed the chunky pineapple bits. Pants-bursting meal. ;)

Very average chicken rice. Rice too dry and not fragrant/flavorful. Chicken was standard, not horrible but nothing to scream home about. 1/3 stars, not food king good

This is hands down the most OVERHYPED chicken rice Iโ€™ve had in my life.... Iโ€™m so disappointed because NOC Food King literally said itโ€™s โ€œThe Best Chicken Rice in Singaporeโ€ giving it 3/3? I donโ€™t understand.... the rice was quite flavourless and mushy, the chicken breast itself was bland and tough, soup was o k? The only rly good thing was the chicken sauce.... itโ€™s also q pricey for chicken rice at $5.80 but thereโ€™s aircon so I guess can close one eye...

What happens when there is no menu and price available, and when I didn't read enough reviews beforehand before visiting = I got a huge shock when I was charged $5.9 for a steamed breast chicken rice. for the 5mins while I was waiting for the food, I was anxiously wondering what I would be served with. Is it gona be a set with vegetable and achar or smth? Because I don't eat vegetables and it would be a waste of money.๐Ÿคฃ Alas, I was served this huge platter with achar and salted veg chicken soup as well. Didn't believe it was mine till the cashier called up my number ๐Ÿ˜‚ first impression "omg such a huge portion! How am I going to finish? Omg why is there chicken meat in the soup too? Chicken overload sia!" Weirdly, the chicken rice was yellower than usual. Thankfully it didn't taste too weird. What I like about this chicken rice is the fried garlicky bits on top of the chicken! Plus it was served with carrot sticks! Smth which you won't see elsewhere! The chicken + rice + soya sauce + chilli sauce all met my criteria of a good chicken rice. And ok la, if you compare this with places like wee nam kee, this is still cheaper. But if you compare it with kopitiam chicken rice, it is almost twice the price la. But you get good soup and achar here. Realised (afterwards) that the soup is "free" and achar is free flow (but actually all built in to the $5.9 price lol). I quite like the pineapple in the sour and sweet achar! But because I didn't eat the rest of the veg like onions and cucumber, I would have been paiseh to take a second serving of achar and waste more veg ๐Ÿ™ˆ the salted veg chicken soup complemented the chicken rice dish very well! Finished all till the last drop. Just that I found it a waste to have chicken meat inside the soup since there was already more than enough chicken for the chicken rice. And I actually finished up my rice even before I could finish the one pax portion of chicken meat. and what's the other good thing about this place you may ask - they accept paywave credit cards

The roasted chicken rice was delicious in its own right, but compared to the steamed chicken, it pales in comparison. The roasted chicken was not as tender and smooth as the steamed chicken - but this is always inevitably the case. Nonetheless, it was still delicious enough! For someone who always buys roasted chicken, Iโ€™ll definitely come back for their steamed chicken instead, for patrons who do not eat steamed chicken at all, this roasted chicken rice would still easily be one that is difficult to find elsewhere!

Located in an air conditioned Coffeeshop beneath Katong Shopping Centre, this Chicken Rice stall has earned a name for itself over the years. Despite the long queues, they have a ordering number system which allows you to sit and wait for your food, without having to go through the turmoil of standing and queueing up. While I bought an โ€˜upsized setโ€™ with extra breast meat and a braised egg, I think a normal plate of chicken rice costs around ~$5/$6. It doesnโ€™t seem like the cheapest of all options, but for a good plate of chicken rice? I think itโ€™s worth it.
This stall is generous with their soup and achar, with both of them being free flow. Customers can bring up their bowls/plates to request for more of these dishes. When I visited, the soup (which seems to change daily) was a combination of peanut, chicken feet, and lotus root - boy was it one of the most flavourful soups Iโ€™ve had from a chicken rice stall. Together with the chicken rice, it was such a good companion to quench your thirst and cleanse your palate as well.
Now to the dish. To me, when judging its elements, chicken rice should have itโ€™s own trinity of chicken, rice, and chilli. The white chicken was smooth, tender and meaty. Drenched in a light, flavourful soya sauce, my favourite part of the gravy was the garlic bits. The crunch and garlic flavour that came with it surprisingly elevated my chicken rice experience to the next level. I actually liked the chilli a lot. While maybe many people might not find it special, I thought that it was actually a good amount of spicy, and also with a tinge of garlic taste in it. Meanwhile, the rice was completely not what I expected. I expected a bowl of greasy, flavourful, fragrant plate of rice. But, it was yellow, on the drier side, and much less fragrant. It seems like they used turmeric rice, but there was still a subtle chicken rice flavour and fragrance to it. Despite not being what I expected, I actually appreciated how it was way less greasy and even healthier than chicken rice(s) elsewhere, and while some people may not find this appealing, I really think that the rice sets this stall apart from other stalls as well.
So, is Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice really delicious? As a bearer of good news (this time), I would say that do not bring shame to their name, and in fact have earnestly lived up by delivering one of the most delicious chicken rice Iโ€™ve eaten in a Long time.
