Take note that we were here on a Sunday, in Tanjong Pagar, where it is almost like an abandoned city (TP is mostly an office area, so it looks dead on weekends).
There were 4 groups seated when we reached.
Sticking to Burpple Beyond, we ordered 2 mains and settled down.
It was shocking that we waited for almost an hour (estimated to be about 50+ minutes), gave up and told them we were leaving (they were slightly embarrassed and apologetic that it took so long), STEPPED OUT, only for the lady boss to come out and said our order was "ready".
Out of politeness, we went back and began the meal.
Take note: no other tables had any main course served the whole time we were there, they all either had Borscht or the dumplings. So they either were just there for small bites & drinks or were waiting longer than us.
Our order: Rosti (with smoked salmon) and a chicken dish.
Both of them did not seem like they would really need that long to cook up.
Opinion of the food: both dishes had underwhelming serving sizes. We felt that if the food was good and serving sizes were large, maybe the wait could be forgiven, but while taste and quality might make the cut, serving sizes were disappointing.
The rosti (which again we emphasis, was nothing so special for it to need 1 hour) was average. 3 circles of potatoes, topped with salmon, and plated with an assortment of vegetables (some salad leaves, sliced onions, sliced radish). Nothing mind-blowing, rosti was unnecessarily oily.
Chicken was well seasoned, served with multiple grilled vegetables below (slices of capsicum in the 3 colours, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms). But it was half of a small bird, so the portion is once again very weak, maybe even scoring a big F for fail.
The lady boss did offer a slice of cake as complimentary dessert, and we appreciate the gesture, but it could not stand out to even mount an attempt at saving the day.
Overall, a lacklustre experience, we give it a 1 out of 5, and even question ourselves if that was too kind.
The wait was an absolute killer, it really should not take that long. The food hardly justified the waiting time.
Once can only imagine that without Burpple Beyond, how disappointing of an experience it would have been...
LAST MINUTE ADDITION:
We saw a reasonably big order being prepped for delivery and we feel that they are overestimating their capability to cope. If you in house diners cannot get their food, external customers really should not be a target market.
FURTHER ADDITION:
We might be reading it wrong, but the staff seemed to have displayed a degree of passive aggression after we sat back down. And that could be another unsatisfactory point to note.
Super chewy! Order the beef (black dumpling) and salmon (white pink) one if you’re going ala carte

Ever tried Eastern European cuisine before? @kapitan.sg is a great place to start, with its chill ambience and great food 😍
My favourite out of all got to be the Salo ($14.90), which was some kind of cold pork belly which was super addictive. The slices were very tender and succulent, and I loved the savoury cured flavour. Pair them with mustard and their sourdough, and you got yourself a fancy appetiser!
Their Dumpling Combo Platter ($17.90) was also a great sharing dish. I love how the dumpling skin was bouncy with a great mouthfeel. The meat within was pretty succulent as well. Loved the beef one with mayo!
The Zharkoe ($27.90) came in a big bread bowl, and it was filled with cheese, potato and a very hearty pork stew. This is one good dish to share and can be very filling.
If you need a drink, the Triple Vodka Martini ($25) is one option. This was quite strong and the Lemon flavour didn't taste too artificial!
It was a great meal at Kapitan 😍 Thank you @kapitan.sg for the food and @smolbelly for inviting!
my friends and i headed down to kapitan.sg recently after seeing their tiktok! (i’ve actually been itching to try their food since the dumpling.ru days but i never got around to it..)
- salmon bliny (salmon crepes) $17.90
- draniki (rosti with salmon) $24.90
not in picture:
- shashlyk (chicken skewers) $23.90
- tarhun (green slavic soft drink) $9.50
- carbonara pelmeni with lamb (dumplings)
my order was the salmon bliny! i loooved the taste of the salmon with the hot crepes and the sour cream at the side.. too bad there were only 2 pieces of it 😭 portion was a little small in my opinion but maybe i just don’t get bougie food
my friend got the draniki! she was kinda disappointed bc it came cold and it wasn’t really appetising by then.. i tried some of the salmon and i slurped it up tho (free food alw the best 😅)
didn’t try the others so i can’t comment on those! but personally would like to try the desserts next time (if i can make the effort to go down…..)
Kvass ($9.80)
Rye bread fermented fizzy drink, a famous street drink in Eastern Europe, which kinda reminded of beer/ wine.
Kompot ($8.50)
(The one with the lemon) Slavic in-house fresh berry drink - low-key reminded of ribena with a mix of some other fruity flavours.
