As with most dishes at jacks place, the meals are generally average. The steak was decent, the slipper lobster was a little too dry and not quite flavourful, and the baked potatoes have the same consistent heartiness as before. Rating 5.8/10.
However, the reason why I am back is for a sense of nostalgia - this place has been at the same location since I was first here as a kid. Staff are generally attentive and courteous.
Founded in 1966 by Jack Hunt and subsequently expanded by Say Lip Hai from 1974 onwards, this old-time casual steakhouse was once ridiculed for selling 'up-market' Western fare in heartland HDB locations.

Seniors may well recall those times in the early 1980s, when a set meal here - consisting of a soup, sirloin steak, salad, baked potato, fruit cocktail, and coffee/tea, cost just SGD $5.20..... at a time when a typical meal was less than SGD $2.
.
These days, their steaks remain as good as before, grilled to your requested doneness, served sizzling on a hot plate. The beef ribeye is juicy and tender, with a satisfying light chew, and robust meaty savoury salty flavour.
.
The accompanying boiled vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrot) have bright vegetal sweet flavour, while the soft baked potato with starchy sweet notes has old-school toppings served tableside - rich sour cream, crisp spring onions, chewy bacon bits. Filling.
.
They also specialise in the tenderloin cut, with 1 option being an eye-catching tableside flambe.

Tender juicy steak done just right. Medium steak that's tender, not chewy or rubbery despite being a thick cut. Flavourful throughout entire steak not just the seared parts on the exterior. Butter truffle topping was flavourful and fragrant, though falling a tad on the salty side, but somehow the combination works well. Couldn't taste the truffle however. Will I return? Yes, steak quality is good!
Its been ages since I came back and it still taste as familiar. Overall, its taste may not be the best but the family friendly vibes they have and the warm customer service does make a mark. We had the beef and chicken steak & the mushroom pasta.
The chicken steak is the most memorable, perhaps the cut for the beef steak was slightly too tough. The pasta was also somewhat more chinese. Its good how they are sprucing up their menu with "Taste around the world" and having a monthly menu featuring a different country - it was Mexico when i went.
Also, the panna cotta is a delight!!

Just average for the price, donβt expect too much π. A bit surprised that it wasnβt as tough/rubbery as I expected.
Jp is having an Aug promo in commemoration of National Day, an Asian Western fusion promo menu. So I tried the NZ Beef Tenderloin with Crispy Honey Prawn Wanton. I had a medium steak and it was good. Cooked good yet not too tough for me. The sauce was an interesting sauce, slightly sweet to suit the prawn wanton. However it's not entirely special. Should have tried other dishes. But this dish redeemed my faith in Jack's Place's steaks. Thank you! Haha! Still think their steaks have standard. But if you are tight on budget, I wouldn't go for this. But to spend this amount on such good quality once in awhile is still worth. My dish was the most ex on the promo menu of $28.50 before GST and service charges. Check their daily set lunch of other signature steaks at affordable pricing.
