More Reviews of good food at Izakaya Nijumaru Restaurant (Cuppage Plaza)

Pretty tasty, and I liked that there was quite a generous amount of meat too. Wasn’t mind blowing but it was still not bad. It came with miso soup, pickled radish, and a slice of orange.

Place was quite casual, service was friendly as well. Quite a good place for a quick Japanese meal with a small group of friends if you’re around the area.

Overall: I guess the consistency is lacking but at its best it's a super authentic izakaya, everything is homely and the queue says it all. Come with reservation else you're gonna be waiting for a long time. The front of house are all (very nice) Singaporean but the kitchen is Japanese, explains the high standard of the food

Crab porridge

It's basically crab, rice, stock

So simple but the light umami is very addictive. Take note there's small bits of shell tho, doesn't rlly affect the experience too much

This was absolutely delicious. It's a light vinegared cucumber and kelp.

Ridiculously refreshing and the texture was on point too! Must try!

My only gripe w the place: starters came after the mains were done, we were almost finished w the meal by now

Raw spinach w bacon. I mean it's bacon so how bad can it be. Overall not particularly stunning because I didn't like the crispiness of the spinach against the bacon bits, it takes abit of chopstick skill to eat too

Today's one was incredibly fishy and so they didn't charge us. But usually it's much better I guess

The miso soup was average but the rest of the sides were fine

The beef was slightly tough and not v smoky, it's decent considering their general standard but I wouldn't get it again.

The garlic sauce on top helps set it apart though

It's not the crispy kind but it's fatty and tender with a springy bite. It's absolutely lovely with the garlic puree and very satisfying with rice.

Take note this isn't the yakitori style, I guess it's more teishoku actl(it looks as if it's lightly seared?)

It's crispy and the flavour on top is unique, they probably have their house blend of sauce.

It's hard to find good yaki onigiri in Singapore, this is a must try

One of the most signature Japanese home stews: beef and potatoes

The beef was not perfectly tender but this was still hearty and very authentic

Fantastically fatty and wobbly, this is absolutely textbook. A must order

PS I saw some bad reviews on this, and some really good ones. I guess their consistency is a problem but it really was superb when I went

Assorted sashimi set.

The sashimi is fresh. The salmon and yellowtail must have been one of the better tasting sashimi I had for some time.

This dish is only so so.

Tasted plain but its fresh.

You'd think an individual pork belly dish in a well-reviewed Japanese restaurant would blow your mind. It wasn't that tender and quite ordinary.

Yes, what were the odds we ordered leek not knowing tori already had leek? Meat was inconsistent - some pieces were fantastic while some tasted cheap. Leek was juicy although you'd wonder why it's chao tar.

Mixed means salmon, mentaiko, ume and nori. The plum is very strong so beware. But overall the broth and rice combo was excellent.

Noodle was fine. Tempura clearly wasn't the work of a master. And they include potato tempura, which is quite rare.

The pork belly is just simply awesome for me. Melts in you mouth and well marinated. Rating: 8/10

After all the awesome Japanese izakayas, I'm just trying desperately to relive that holiday. Unfortunately, gotta make do with what we have here... 😭

Their meatballs ain't bad, but lacked any wow factor (where's my egg yolk😐). Not a bad choice but I'll probably try other skewers the next time I'm here.

Just my luck, the grilled eggplant was sold out, so this was the alternative that was presented to us. 🤷‍♂️(Off the menu)

Fortunately, this was yummmmmeh! Soft eggplant in a sweet teriyaki sauce topped off with dancing bonito flakes. Can't say I was displeased! 😋

Between pork and beef, I got the sliced pork which turned out great. 👍 Tender, slightly fatty cuts of pork in a sweet, gingery sauce – perfect for pouring over rice.

The set also comes with a small tofu side, miso soup, a slice of orange and a few pickles. Really good value hidden away here. (My friend's BBQ Beef set however had meat that was quite tough, so you can decide if you wanna bet on that coming out better for you.)
