Xing Hua cuisine is one of my favourite cuisines and just recently I came across some social media posts about such cuisine, thus it leads to my cravings. One of us suggested heading to Yishun Heng Hua Restaurant for a try as she find that the food is pretty decent there.

We order a set meal for two at $32 which includes:

1) Herbs-Food Prawns in Bamboo Shoot 药膳竹筒虾
2)Deep Fried Slices of "Tenggui Fish" 炸马鲛鱼
3)Braised Bean Curd with 豆皮芥兰
4) Lor Mee / Mee Sua / Bee Hoon
5) Free Dessert 赠送甜品

as well as some other dishes to share among us. Xing Hua Restaurant is tucked at the far end corner of the HDB block.

Those who enjoy herbal soup may enjoy this dish. The number of prawns given was generous and the size of the prawn was relatively big. The natural-tasting soup in the Bamboo Shoot has a good subtle seafood taste in its light herbal taste.

I'm glad that they have this in their set menu. The fish is deep fruit to golden perfection and you can dip them in the homemade sauce with garlic.

A sweet gravy drenched on the pieces of braised bean curd and stirred fried with Kai Lan, slices of carrot and button mushrooms.

The White Lor Mee is also one of Xing Hua's Cuisine Staple Food to order. A version of Chinese La Mian soaked in a flavoursome broth and not as starchy as our traditional braised Lor Mee style. It was a comforting bowl of food especially when it was a wet day. The Lor Mee had included some crispy Pork Belly and vegetables in it.

The set meal includes a free dessert and it was white fungus with red date. It was refreshing and not so sweet. What a good ending to our meal.

Located a few minutes walk away from Yishun MRT, this Chinese restaurant offers Heng Hua cuisine at an affordable price when compared to higher end establishments like Putien.

For $4.50, the serving of the Heng Hua beehoon was generous - one can find clams, prawns, pork belly, peanuts, tau pok, mushrooms and vegetables to accompany the chewy ultra-thin strands of bee hoon. We also enjoyed the chili served at every table, which was slightly sour, garlicky and does pack a punch.

On top of our mains, we also ordered the deep fried fish that came in three huge pieces. The pieces were well-fried, with crunchy sides and were not overly greasy when one bites into the meat. That said, it can be a bit dry for those who prefer tender and more juicy cuts of fish.

This place is also rather popular so it is advisable to visit during non-peak hours, especially if you’re coming in bigger groups. Other dishes we tried but not pictured were the fried mee sua, oyster omelette and lor mee.

Don't miss their Heng Hua Beehoon, really executed well and the chilli just brings it up a notch. The cold pigs trotters was also above average, and do try their Spinach with Golden Mushrooms and Superior Stock as well.

Journey to the North for affordable Putien Food. Aside from the must order Heng Hua Style Fried Bee Hoon & Heng Hua Style Lor Mee, highly recommended to try their Stir-Fried Sliced Yam. The Yam cubes are slightly crispy on the outside coated with some sweet sauce while it’s soft and mushy inside. I can just order this as a meal for myself, it’s so good!

Comforting soup ( not too starchy ) with noodle texture quite qiuqiu and ingredients similar to the beehoon (clams, prawn, mushrooms and tofu).

I ordered the signature Bee Hoon, just nice for one person.
It comes with one prawn, a few clams, slices mushrooms and slice tofu.

$4.50 for small (enough for 1 person meal)

Very warm and comforting bowl of Noodle soup. The lor mee is nice and chewy, and the soup is thickened with corn starch, and gooey. Nothing particularly exciting about it, but something i would eat (or have eaten) again

A pleasant, simple and humble dish.

Heng hua is a hidden gem nestled among some HDB flats at the back of Yishun mrt, serving Putien (place in China) food.

Their Stewed tofu featured minced up tofu with a mixture of root vegetables, mince meat and finished off with egg. It was very comforting and warm, and the flavours of the tofu and veges worked well together. I would say the dish itself is a bit bland, but that's intended and fitting given the flavour profile of the dish. It works to bring out the nature flavours of the tofu.

Recently, we were reminded by a friend that such a place still exists for some tasty Heng Hua food at coffeeshop prices.
Be it the classic Heng Hua dry Beehoon or wet Lor Mee, they definitely delivered in authenticity and flavours. Their extensive menu offered many appealing dishes to check out.
While their Prawn Rolls may not be the type with delicate ingredients; they had a homely kinda nostalgia especially with the thicker fluffy batter. The deep fried sliced fish could be better if it was crispier though.
The last time we ate here was more than 5 years ago but their standards have still be as consistent. No classy setup but they delivered the flavours at affordable prices. No doubt why it was still full house when we visited past 830pm earlier tonight.

Cheap and good!!

Prefer the lor mee over the mee sua. Lychee sweet and sour pork, fish are good.

Be prepared to queue, quite a lot of people but relatively small area. They are located below a hdb and is non-air conditioned. Worth a try though!

Part of the 6 dishes + free dessert set meal we have ordered for 6 pax ($108 if I'm not wrong).

Delicious and affordable henghua dishes!! Would totally recommend this place, but would be better if you make a reservation as it's really crowded. It's under one of those HDB blocks & has the entire 'coffeeshop' to itself.

Other dishes that I've tried include the lychee sweet & sour pork, fried squirrel fish with mango, herbal prawns, fried henghua beehoon etc.

Comfort Food At It's Best // Heng Hua Restaurant! For those who're in Love W 莆田美食!

At $4.50 each, these two dishes provided far more satisfaction than I had imagined! I loved the lor mee broth that was thick and sweet, packed full of the goodness of the seafood ingredients (clams, prawns, squid).

I personally liked the fried mee sua more as I found it tastier (but that’s just me, my taste buds favour the heavier tasting foods). If only there was more fried pork belly!!

Overall, Heng Hua restaurant is an unassuming eatery to visit for simple, comforting Heng Hua cuisine, which may remind you of your mother’s home cooked food. While it pales in comparison to the Michelin star awarded Putien, what’s not to love with these budget-friendly prices?? I will be sure to visit again to try the honey coated yam slices that I loveeeee.

There’s stir fried yam slices ($10) that is soft inside but fried to a golden crisp and coated with a sweet sauce on the outside. The Lor mee ($4.50) is the ultimate savoury food, rmb to pair the broth with some chili to bring out more umami flavour. Also had some drunken cockles with a garlicky kick.

Simple yet satisfying dish! The beehoon is finer than usual and the ingredients in the dish compliment the beehoon very well. Ordered a medium size and it costs $8. Good and affordable! 👍🏻
