Have been wanting to give Kaunta a try but never found the time to, so I was really looking forward to my meal here when I finally made a reservation. The lunch sets here are extremely affordable and value for money, going for as low as $60. I went for the mid tier set as it was the only one with Uni chirashi which I was craving for. The sushis and sashimis here are mostly aged, which gives off more flavours as compared to the usual fare at the other omakase restaurants near the hood. Here’s what I had:

> Sakura Ebi Salad
> Meijina (small scale black fish)
> Ishigakidai (spotted knifejaw seabream)
> Houbou (blue sea robin fish)
> Sumi Ika (spineless squid)
> Mikan Tai (orange seabream)
> Chutoro (tuna belly)
> Hotate (scallops)
> Uni Chirashi
> Miso Soup
> Yuzu Sorbet

Moving on to their Signature dish, the Seafood Feast. As the name suggests, this was quite the feast with a variety of crustaceans thrown in. The seafood was fresh and packed with sweet, oceanic flavours, with the sauce adding more oomph to it.

Ended off with Mentaiko Salmon w Broccolis which didn’t disappoint too! Salmon with umami Mentaiko piled on top, with a generous dollop of tobiko on the side. They do have happy hour and their tower of beer is going at a pretty affordable rate so do bring along some friends with you!

If you’d like something more customised, you could Build Your Own dish by choosing your choice of mains and carbs. We went with their chef’s recommendation of Wagyu Ribeye and mashed potato to go along with it. The result was a nice rust-red shade of ribeye cooked till a pleasant medium rare, which was tender and juicy to say the least. The accompanying sauce was what gild the lily.

Looking for a nice place to wind down with your friends after a day’s worth of work? Why not give Hidey Hole a try?

A hole in the wall, you’ll be greeted by lots of bear bricks the moment you enter the door. Was fortunate enough to try a couple of dishes off their menu:

Started off with some Fried Enoki which was freaking amazing. Fried to a crisp golden brown, it remained nice and crisp despite us taking some time with the shots 📸 addictive, I’d say this makes for a great finger food to go with beer!

The Hiyashi Chuka - a Japanese Inspired Cold Capellini with various vegetables thrown in along with some Sliced Gammon Ham, Chicken Breast, Shredded Omelette and Tobiko Roe. This was pretty good, a rather clean and healthy meal without being too heavy on the palate.

This might just be the most “brunch looking dish” on the table. The Toast Skagenrora comprises of a Garlic Thick Toast piled with cheese, Shrimp Chunks, Mayo, Creme Fraiche, Horseradish, Mustard and Tobiko Roe. They certainly did not scrimp on the shrimps, as you were almost promised 1 with every bite. Despite being left out for a while, the toast remains crispy and I welcome the the change in texture. Accompanying this was a side of extremely creamy scrambled eggs and rustic salad which completes the meal.

I tried the Sambusa, which is an African inspired crispy samosas with spiced curry beef filling. Somewhat like our SG version of samosas but XL version, this was pretty nostalgic as I haven’t had one in ages and I remember getting it as breakfast from my canteen back in school.

Dropped by Canada 🇨🇦 for some Loaded Poutine Fries. Piled with Mozzarella and Crumbled Feta Cheese, along with some Shredded Chicken Breast, Bacon, Grana Padano, Shredded Omelette, before being drenched in Brown Gravy and sprinkled with Scallion, Creme Fraiche, Parsley. They weren’t kidding when they said it’s loaded because there were so much ingredients you can barely see the thick cut fries. It gets jelak after a while so do order this to share!

What’s your favourite meal of the day? If yours is brunch then you’re in for a treat! Supply & Demand has recently launch their Around-The-World Brunch Menu where you get to try brunch dishes inspired from other countries!

Started my meal with some Freshly Shucked Oysters from USA 🇺🇸 with some drops of lemon and a hit of Tabasco. Envy yet? 🤣

Found this gem of a place tucked away in the corners of Yishun. Moin Moin is a gelato shop that offers the usual classic flavours like Cookies & Cream, Matcha to more intriguing ones like White Chrysanthemum and Osmanthus Lychee. The latter caught my eye and it certainly did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the fruity sweetness which goes along well with the subtle floral notes. Was glad I ordered this to go with my Dark Chocolate, which could be a little heavy and the Osmanthus Lychee helped to change things up a little.

The waffle was crispy on the outside, and doughy on the inside 💯 the temperature contrast of cold ice cream and hot waffles is pure bliss guys, it will always be one of my go to desserts!

Apart from the usual hotpot items such as pork belly, black fungus, mushrooms, there was this particular item that caught my eye and since I was in an adventurous mood, I decided to give it a go. True to its name, the Dragonfruit Prawn Paste does look similar to the fruit, though it tastes nothing like it 😂 Scooping them up into small pieces, I delicately dropped them into the hotpot and let it boil for a bit. The resulting outcome was a pretty slimy and chewy prawn paste that had absorbed all of the mala essence. Pretty interesting!
