[JB, MALAYSIA] Back at my favourite Malaysian eatery Tong Guan, that sells a good range of Malaysian kopitiam dishes that were of good quality! Honestly, I do think that this place is a good introduction to Malaysian food, considering the variety they serve and the good quality they have managed to sustain. Here are some dishes we ordered:
Fried Yam Kuih - now this is the winner for me. The exterior of the yam kueh pieces were so crispy while the inside remained so fluffy. Each crunch is so satisfying and tasted even better when you dip onto their sambal chilli! Very addictive and probably the best yam kueh I've had.
Durian Chendol - absolutely love their Chendol, as it isn't too sweet and yet the Gula Melaka was aromatic! The beans were soft and creamy and the ice had the right consistency. The durian flesh was aromatic and was so rich!
Signature Kopi - although it can get quite sweet, the aromatic Nanyang bean flavour was just so inviting. There was no dryness in the aftertaste (or the siap siap feeling)! Just a good smooth coffee 😍
Definitely will be back to try more dishes!
"Indulged in the delightful Durian Chendol, an immensely satisfying treat. The generous durian meat cube exudes a captivating fragrance, complementing perfectly with the Gula Melaka sauce and coconut milk ice. A truly luxurious delight, perfect for sharing with companions!"

[JB, MALAYSIA] Had a wonderful meal at Tong Guan Kopitiam and I can't wait to be back 😍
Their handmade mee hoon kway comes with different soup bases, from the standard anchovies stock to laksa to curry. Among all, I feel like the laksa one is the best as the coconut creaminess comes through strong without being too overly spicy. The handmade noodles had a firm bite which we thoroughly enjoyed!
The Milo Lava Toast we ordered was bursting full of condensed milk! Somehow the toast does not get too soggy as well. Sweet, rich, chocolately and buttery!
The Signature Coffee we got came looking so Instagram worthy, due to the amount of foam produced! The coffee itself is strong, very reminiscent of a good traditional coffee.
Finally we have the Durian Chendol, which was really satisfying 😍 the huge cube of durian meat was so fragrant, and paired so well with the Gula Melaka sauce and the coconut milk ice. Very rich and will be great to share with others!
With such an extensive menu, there's definitely something for everyone!
I can't stand the sweetness of Kaya sometimes, and this kopitiam just has the right amount of sweetness for their Kaya toast (RM2).
Kopi also spot on.
(Finding parking is a hassle though)
Tong Guan Kopitiam
City square , JB, level 3 , MF-22
This was an unexpected find in Citysquare.
Just Neighbours to the popular Taiwan type sponge cake , Original cake which just landed foot in city square ( you won't miss it because if the snaking queues ), I found a poster outside tong guan Kopitiam marketing its egg sponge cake which boasts a simple but authentic recipe.
Feeling that I shouldn't leave JB without a box or two in hand ( even if it wasn't hiap Joo or original cakes ), I decided to give tong guan a try .
There were no snaking queues but there were certainly lots of pre- ordered cakes set aside on their counter table. When I found that I had the privilege to get the last 2 cakes out of 4 remaining cakes - I was elated and felt that these cakes were really meant for me .
The cakes were still warm when I bought them and I fell in love with them at the first bite. One cake is good for 4 to 6 persons but I finished half of it alone at one seating.
Being a lover of cakes and especially traditional type of cakes , I have never experienced a cake with a texture that is so pillowy Soft ( and yet with a good structure ) and moist . The best part is that I couldn't sense or smell any baking soda ( which was pretty strong in hiap joo's banana cakes probably to help make the cakes rise ).
As promised by the marketing poster of tong guan bakery - indeed all natural ingredients - just high quality flour, eggs, milk , canola oil, sugar .
Health enthusiasts will be happy to know that this cake doesn't contain butter.
straight to Tong Guan Kopitiam to order an Original Traditional Homemade Egg Sponge Cake (RM 13) for collection in the evening! If you reach late to order for the cake, it might all gone so drop by early! There are so many different brands but I pretty much enjoy theirs as the egg flavour isn’t so strong! Cake is fluffy, soft and fragrant which just melts in your mouth, I LOVE IT!! It taste even better after refrigerated!! #tongguankopitiam #jbcitysquare #jbcity #jbcityguide #jbcitycentre #jbcitysquaremall
