The Alkaff Mansion

These are actually piquillo peppers stuffed with atlantic cod fish and served with its own piquillo emulsion. Within the thin shell of the peppers were meaty salted Atlantic cod cooked with onions and garlic. This dish exemplifies the cuisine to be expected here, where there were complex mix of flavours, but all in harmony.

I'm not the first to post these squid ink donuts, but make it the last one you see before you head down for some. It's not squid ink flavoured donuts, these are filled with thick, molten squid ink that'll become a mess if you weren't expecting it.

A thick housemade squid ink sauce was formed into round shapes, coated with flour, egg, and tempura batter, then deep fried to golden brown. Which means it's just a thin layer of batter holding all those rich squid ink together.

This seems to be the favourite dish here, based on what I gathered from friends who have visited this place, whether for tasting or on their own. Although most people may not be used to the daring sharp flavours in most of their pintxos, I thought those were really good, so hope you'll give them a try as well.

Come by this beautiful place with 101 years of history to chill and enjoy the food with your families and friends 🥰

That's one generous serving of gratinated crab in a shell, with the whole mix tasting like lobster bisque, but one that's more intense. That's the result of the seafood stock base, and a Sofrito base which was prepared with leek, onion, tomato, and cooked till caramelised, before adding brandy. The smoky texture on the top is the result of grilling this whole shell with toppings of bread crumbs and butter.

The Alkaff Mansion has reopened with three dining concepts housed in the historical building that stood in the same location since 1918. It now housed TXA, a pintxo bar serving food from the region of Basque; UNA, a classy space for fine gastronomy of Basque cuisine; and Wildseed Café, a beautiful cafe with floral themes running through the setup and menu.

I spent an evening there sampling many pintxos, and really good pintxos that looked deceptively simple. Pictured is Pintxo Igeldo, served with confit tomato, tuna, anchovies and piparra. A complex mix of flavours, it's edgy with sharpness and heat, but balanced by the sweetness of tomatoes. And that is consistent throughout the pintxo menu, you can sense several things going on but they were all in harmony.
