Here's a bun from Swee Heng that I've been wanting to try for months since I saw it, but didn't buy because I expected it to be an indulgent calorie bomb (dieting days, yanno). Finally bought it yesterday! Was so excited to cut it open to see how much salted egg filling was inside...
...and then I got super confused. Salted egg? Where?? When I used my fork to pry open the bun, there was a small hole in the bun with a super thin pale yellow layer on the interior, like someone had used a butter knife to very very sparingly spread a thin layer of sauce inside. Even as I was eating it, I couldn't taste any salted egg. Since there were 2 buns in the box, I tried again and it was the same thing. (First pic was after microwaving, the "flaps" closed so you cant really see the hole inside. Second pic was when I cut it open before microwaving so you can the lack of filling in all its glory)
As a floss bun on it's own, it's really good. You can never go wrong with a good ol' floss bun. Unless that floss bun is supposed to be a salted egg floss bun but has no actual salted egg. Then, you've got yourself a disappointment. I have no idea how I'm supposed to score this because it's still really delicious but the lack of salted egg left me feeling like a kid receiving a beautiful box on Christmas, then opening it to find that it's empty. The floss bun would get 8.5/10 but the lack of salted egg gets a -1.5.
Not to mention that it's 2 for $2.40, which means 1 is $1.20 for a small bun, hence it's more expensive. Yeahhhh this was a disappointing experience, especially for a bun that I've been dreaming of trying for so long :/
โญ Rating: 7/10 empty holes
๐ค worth the price: no
๐ฆ would I buy again: unless there's actual salted egg, no
Canโt go wrong with a scrambled eggs sandwich with mayonnaise. Bread was slightly fluffy which was nice. I would say itโs on the pricey side for the small sandwich you get but itโs not too bad if you donโt want to opt for fast food / junk food options but want something comforting.
We visited on a weekday evening and it was fairly busy, though seats for two were quite easily available.
This was a very comforting snack / mini-meal. The scrambled eggs and chicken luncheon was so good together. I felt that the Mayo was spammed a bit too much but maybe thatโs just me trying to be healthy because it made the sandwich a lot more sinfully delicious.
The portion is great if youโre looking for a light (in terms of fillingness) meal. We came on a Wednesday evening and seats were easily available.
Giving Swee Heng 1989 Classic Bakery's Chocolate Mochi Tarik ($2.40) a go! ๐คค
โ
The mochi is towards the liquid-y type but it still provides an overall chewy bite to the bread. โบ The mochi was good on its own but felt that it doesn't complement the chocolate and bread very well. ๐ Think would be better if the mochi was also chocolate flavour, then the bread would be superb!! ๐The fillings to bread ratio was just nice too. As a chocolate lover myself, probably went too hyped up for this, but will get it again if I'm craving for Chocolate Mochi bread! ๐
Simply love the sight of freshly baked bread.
As Long as its warm - all breads taste good .
You will be spoilt for choices at their SingPost branch and the breads are ready as early at 9 am.
The basement of SingPost is like a mini breakfast heaven.
You get coffee and toast , Swee Heng cafe , nam kee pau and of course one of my favourites , Kopi and tarts .
The ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐ฆ ๐๐จ๐๐ก๐ข ($๐.๐๐ ๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ) isnโt a that bad a bun, itโs just a bad matcha bun. There is a bare semblance of a matcha flavour, instead impersonated by a mild and artificial hint of... green.
Also, I donโt get what theyโre trying to do with the BITS of red bean?? Maybe it work better would a red bean paste, because there was almost no red bean flavour, instead masked by the yam paste.
The flakey top has the tiniest bit of matcha flavour, but isnโt flakey nor bitter enough to add anything to the bun.
Overall, this bun isnโt doing much. Itโs sweet and chewy, with a mild hint of each of the flavours. Iโm just mad itโs none of the things itโs claiming to be.
I liked the thick mix of yam and salted egg paste, but the mochi felt rather unnecessary and the bread was dry and tasteless. Also, the purple swirl crackly top part of the bread had a texture that reminded me of toilet paper.... I wanted so badly to like this bun but the only thing I liked was the filling (which was perhaps 20% of the bun in terms of quantity).
My fav bread from Swee Heng has got to be this taro salted egg mochi bread โค๏ธ
Not too sweet as advertised. Traditional styled mooncake without anything fancy.
Bread lovers alert ๐จ
I call these my green babies ๐ถ because they look so โpoofy โ - my term for spongy and puffy ๐ฅณ. Every time I was pass them , I canโt help but feel like giving them a good squeeze ๐ฌ.
Intrigued by what sweet potato leaves taste like in a bread - that was the beginning of my experience with this bread.
Weird but this bread actually tastes like a matcha red bean and can easily pass off as one. The sweet potato flavour has this earthy and green flavour like a palate cleanser while the red bean provides a luxurious creaminess and imparts some โ sinfulnessโ to the otherwise pretty heathy bread .
Unlike other varieties of swee Hengโs bread , this bread as well as the similarly shaped taro 5 grain bread as well as the sweet potato bread have a spongy and more chewy texture - possibly from a higher quality Japanese flour used .
My first encounter with this red bean bread was the best because the red bean was less sweet with a more pronounced red bean flavour . These days , the red bean twirled into the bread is somewhat sweeter ๐ฅด.
Nevertheless - these are still yummy and I urge you to try one soon ๐ especially when they are warm and fresh . Available only at selected swee Heng outlets .
Finally found my favourite bread at Swee Heng! โ๐ป Itโs always unavailable
$1.60
Finally my fav bread from Swee Heng is back! ๐ Or at least I finally find it - black sugar walnut toast, $1.60
Service was slow but I applaud them for their generosity with the butter - itโs a huge slab!! If you like yakun toast, this is somewhat similar.
Couldn't really tell it's Tom Yum blind folded or otherwise. For that matter I was almost going through a food test to guess what it really is. I was landing my answer on caramelized onion chicken..
Otak lovers, have you already tried this?
This amazingly creative bakery uses otak paste, mayonnaise and cheese spreaded generousLy over the top of the bun. Using pandan leaf to wrap round the bun resembling how otaks are served in their regular form; and yet emitting the sweet fragrance of the pandan flavours. Have not tried yet, what are you waiting for?
