There are not many places left that still use charcoal to fry hokkien mee but one legendary place still does it the traditional way and that is none other than Swee Guan. Opens only in the evening till late, this is a fried hokkien mee institution. Though prices are not as wallet friendly, my medium sized plate costs $8, the flavour and quality that you are going to get more than makes up for it. The slightly wet consistency makes wonderful slurping actions and with each slurp you can taste the breath of the wok. The noodles come with sliced squid and fresh deshelled prawns but the star has got to be the noodles. You do not even need the citrusy of the lime as it is already very appetising and rich of seafood flavour.

Hokkien Mee here is cooked in batches, u can't order until uncle cook finish the batch. Thus a queue starts to form up rather quickly on this weekday dinner night.

The coffee shop here is rather old school.

Hokkien mee only sold in medium($8) & Large($10). So it's more expensive than your average hokkien mee. They use to have the small $6 portion, but auntie said they don't sell small anymore.

Wife took the medium portion and felt that its pretty less.

Large portion was just right. Total 5 prawns.

Very Strong wok hei, one of the better hokkien mee I had for quite some time. Prawns and squids were fresh.

The chilli though, was quite a mismatch, it was sweet and the taste just doesn't go well with the wok hei hokkien mee.

Nevertheless, still a solid plate of hokkien mee, i will return again for more.

I went down around 5pm, no queue.
The Hokkien mee standard still good, strong wok hei, very tasty. Portion is getting smaller (this is medium), I think next visit I order large Liao for myself 🤣.

It’s still as good as my last visit,very flavourful, wok hei strong, and uncle still have attitude 😂.
I realised the chilli is more spicy now and the portion is getting smaller, but still win my vote for the best Hokkien mee.

While there’s a few stalls linking to the same family, this is the original place at Lorong 29; before the family members open in other places.

For this stall in the corner coffee shop, they only open in the evening which usually start attracting queue. But it will clear pretty fast as they will cook in batches.

Avoid taking photos of the stall as the auntie will shout at you. Anyway the hokkien mee definitely worth trying.

Your first taste will have the strong charcoal taste and it get tastier as you eat. Although $6 for the small plate was a bit expensive.
