The palm sugar and coconut were expectedly pleasing, but the sago was basic and clumpy, ruining the dish.
The magic is in the soup. So umami. The relatively large prawns deserve a mention. Everything else was straightforward.
Reportedly one of Singapore's best assam laksas. I like my broth thicker and more sardine, but I'll admit this was very good and authentic.
This is such a Penang drink haha. It's okay lor.
We were all kinda disappointed with Penang Kitchen's assam laksa which seemed to lack a little something --- perhaps a little sardine would do the trick to add a little more savoury flavours.
Everyone enjoyed the prawn noodles though. The soup broth in particular was full of flavours from the sweet and slightly briney prawns.
The standards seemed to have slipped a little and this is evident as their neighbours were all packed on a weekend evening. It's a shame really though...
Anyone has a good spot to recommend for good penang food?
Penang Kitchen has been around since my college days (which seem eons ago).
Tucked in a side lane next to Coronation Plaza, it serves homely Penang-style food. I never use to frequent it as a student because it tends to be on the pricier side.
We were in the area recently but the wait for burgers nearby was just way too long, and decided to pop by Penang Kitchen instead.
It is surprisingly empty on a weekend night so I got a little worried. The lor bak however was still good. Loved the juicy and crunchy filling and how they stuffed the beancurd skin full with ingredients.
The Penang CKT was a little flat. Yes, there was wokhei but it was kinda on the bland side and we didn't really fancy it.
