Dau sa piah @ $1
Perhaps this confectionery's piahs are better than their cakes and muffins. This dausapiah and pineapple piah are actually quite good. This is flaky and the saltiness taste is just nice, while the pineapple one has a good taste but not too sweet.
A little expensive though as there other places that sell better piah at less than $1.
Kaya cake @ $1
This has the deceiving look of a good old school cake but it's rather disappointing when put in the mouth. Taste waste, it's rather mild and not too sweet, which is good as sometimes kaya flavoured pastry might be overpowering. But the bottom layer has this weird texture that's not what I imagined it to be and felt almost like plastic.
Box of assorted muffins @ 60cents each.
There's blueberry, raisin, cheese, pandan, orange and walnut flavours. But they all taste about the same. Good buy for the price but it's not superb.
Crust was meh. Better when reheated, but still not great. For the filling its much much firmer than hangheung’s lpb, there's some crunchy thing? Also it has the banana soft roll taste. I wouldn’t repurchase.
Got both the sweet and salty ones. It was kinda floury, slightly crunchy but the pastry part was not v nice. The salty one is nicer, sweet one is ok only. Don’t think I’ll repurchase.
These were adequately moist and had pretty decent texture, but nothing to shout about. The walnut was the nicest, as I like the crunch from the walnuts, and the muffin itself had a nice neutral flavour. The blueberry one had some blueberry jam, was alright. The banana one had the artificial banana essence flavour taste, but it’s like the traditional soft chewy snack which I like, so I’m alright with it. The lemon one had the artificial lemon essence taste too, rly similar to Khong Guan lemon biscuit so i wasn’t too impressed.
This signature item is probably as known for its size as it is for its goodness. I must admit the muffin base was good, which leads me to ask why not sell a more shiok bigger version? Does it have to do with how a normal-size muffin, even when good, can be jelak? Here are blueberry, cheese, walnut, banana and the popular pandan. The latter uses a different base and it's even more fragrant!
Bits of oreo on the muffin but can’t really taste much of the oreo flavour.
Mini walnut muffin from this old confectionery shop in beauty world. Bits of walnut with soft muffin, good for an afternoon snack.

This is probably what Ng Kim Lee is most famous for, and they proudly display a newspaper clipping featuring their muffins right above the muffin display.
Although there are a variety of flavours to pick from, including original, chocolate, Oreo, banana, pandan, cheese, walnut and lemon, I didn’t detect strong tastes in any of the muffins to distinguish their flavours. Might be an effect of them being packed with the banana flavoured muffin, but they all ended up tasting like a mix between plain-banana. They’re still an affordable and comforting little treat anyway, and super worth it at 60 cents! Get a minimum of 6 pieces if you want them to pack it in a box for you (yes clearly I couldn’t resist popping one in my mouth before realising I forgot to snap a photo 😂). The muffins are soft, moist and cake-like, not too dense, and not too sweet. Not much more you can ask for, and I always make sure to buy some when I pass by!
Can’t really tell the cheese and original apart. They look alike, and honestly neither have a distinctive taste. All the flavours I bought ended up tasting faintly of banana.
Despite being the original plain flavour, it still tastes faintly of banana. A lovely, light and addictive treat nonetheless - where the true danger is when you just can’t stop yourself from popping more pieces in your mouth when you know you should stop.
There’s a few specks of cookies inside the batter which might have been Oreo. Other than the colour of the muffin, it tastes the same as the other flavours, but don’t let that deter you from getting this delectable bite-sized treat.
Pandan aroma is pretty faint, but overall still a delicious little treat.
Moist and light banana muffin - perfect little snack to pop in your mouth!
Same good muffin base - soft and moist, but that’s pretty much it. Although you can see the specks of Oreo crumbs in the muffin, they don’t contribute much to the taste, nor do they have any crunchiness left in them. Still delicious though :)
Walked by Ng Kim Lee at 9.40pm and was surprised they were still open so of course I walked in. What caught my eye almost immediately were the packets of differently coloured mantous in a box near the entrance of the shop. They come in packs of 4 and in various flavours - pumpkin (pictured), pandan, sweet potato, and original I think.
Settled on getting only one pack and I really had to restrain myself from taking another! Next time will be even harder 😣 the pumpkin flavoured buns were naturally sweetened by pumpkin and you could see the specks in there. I enjoyed eating the bun on its own the following day without toasting or steaming - it was still really soft! However after a few days I decided to toast the bread to make some sandwiches to bring to work and it was heavenly. While the toasted bits turn brown and crunchy, the underside and interior of the bun remained soft and no less flavourful than it was the first time I tried the bun. I’d totally buy this again or try the other flavours in a heartbeat!
