Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I ended up in Punggol, a place I rarely ever set foot on. Was looking for a place to eat and chanced upon this stall, âHuang Hong Jiâ on Google Maps. It said âtemporarily closedâ but I took my chances.
This stall is like a âhole in the wallâ with the only other stall being a drinks store. I ordered the Signature Porridge and it was amazing - it was filled with pork, fish and cuttlefish. The consistency of the porridge was great and I enjoyed every mouthful of it. I also loved the crispy bits that came with it.
This porridge literally made my day. Itâs so good I would be willing to travel to Punggol just to have it again.
They have been serving their authentic Cantonese porridge for many years, started from Tanglin Halt and now at Punggol serving the people living here.
A standalone shop under one of the HDB in Punggol, you will see people constantly coming to dine-in or takeaway their porridge.
The signature porridge comes with a mix of fish, pork and cuttlefish. You need to dig like finding treasure hunt but I would say the ingredients portion is good for me.
What I also like is the deep fried pigâs intestine on the top of my porridge. Crispy and tasty, adding more flavourful taste to it.
Huang Hong Ji has been serving Cantonese congee since 1976 and they are now located in the heartland of Punggol with just a 10mins walk from Punggol MRT station. We decided to pay them a visit on a rainy morning for a hearty breakfast fix.
Signature Porridge (a mix of fish, pork, cuttlefish and fried intestines) ă$4.50
Minced pork with century eggs porridge ă$3.80
The Spicy Umami Prawn pasta was their signature. It was flavorful and worth it to try. The Chicken Bratwurst Agio Olio was spicier than usual. I enjoyed it but do take note. The smoked duck carbonara was probably my favourite out of all the dishes. Portion was just right and it was creamy enough but not âgelateâ. We also ordered the Pan-Seared Seabass Fillet, Truffle Fries and Calamari. I loved the truffle fries! :)
Traditional comfort food. Nice and savoury. You have the option of adding an egg into it.
Finally made my way to punggol to try their porridge. Indeed silky smooth porridge. Their signature porridge pretty interesting as it come with fried pig intestines. Portion good for small eater only.
