PSA TAKE NOTE banana breads come out at 730am and 1030am strictly or later, and sells out somewhat quickly?(because a lot of people buy a lot...) Buns come out at 1130
Overhyped. What did you expect? Not sure why a cult following developed to the point where people are buying back as middleman and others are taking away piles of it, but it's too much and expectedly no simple banana cake should deserve this much attention
That's not to say it's not worth queueing tho, after all, the queue moves quickly. The texture is pretty soft and honestly it's somewhat rich as well, quite unique. Depending on your preference this might not be your favourite but there's no shortcomings at all.
Tbh it's quite ulu u need to grab here, it's not like it's damn near the checkpoint.
The Best Banana Cake (RM10)
Hiap Joo Banana Cake was freshly made and piping hot when I first got it 🍌 Banana cake was soft, moist and not too crumbly! One thing that I really liked was that the cake wasn’t too oily and buttery, but moist enough to not get tough to eat!

Banana Cake + Coconut Bun (S$10)
Received yesterday
In time for today’s breakfast
Made the day before
Best eat fast ‘cos it will turn mouldy on third day.
Hiap Joo seems to be making the rounds lately in SG. Using the simplest of ingredients, this golden brown banana bread is light and soft, incredibly moist and flavourful, making it perfect for breakfast or simply an afternoon snack. The clean cut banana cakes were really fragrant, no thanks to the hole-in-the-wall wood fired oven used by the shop. Priced affordably, it's no wonder there's so much hype over it.
🍌🍞Banana Bread at Hiap Joo .
Just this soft, sweet, moist, rich and crumbly banana bread you sure don’t wanna missed ✨🍌🍞 The batches are freshly baked, make sure to eat it while its warm ❤️ .

How to pass up the opportunity to buy Hiap Joo’s famed banana cake even if I love their buns? Banana cakes are usually out of the oven early, but we were there on a Monday - the only day their banana cakes come out at 12 noon. Note that they don’t accept any pre-orders unless you order more than 20 boxes. When we joined the queue at 11.45, there were already 15 people ahead of us and we missed the first batch of cakes that came out of the oven. Waited another 20 minutes for the second batch at 12.20 and got our hands on these warm, soft, moist and springy banana cakes. Admittedly these don’t have a strong banana taste, but they’re light and super moist. Just skip the small box (5 slices) and buy the large ones with 10 slices!
While Hiap Joo is known for their banana cake, I think the buns are the real star of the show. That’s what the locals say too - Hiap Joo actually started making buns but added on banana cake to their repertoire to keep up with demand.
Snatched up a few buns while they were fresh out of the oven and these traditional buns were so delightfully soft with a slightly charred crust. The otah filling was delicious, a little on the hot side for those who aren’t used to spicy food, leaving a tingling feeling in your mouth after. But it’s nothing a few more mouthfuls of their other delicious buns can’t cure!

Grew up with this delectable treat whenever we’d make a trip across the causeway. Though the frequency of trips have dwindled over the years, we still visit JB at least once a year.
We didn’t have much luck the previous year as Hiap Joo was already closed when we passed by around noon, but we had more luck yesterday at 11am. Even better, there was no queue! Only 2 people ahead of us and they were served so quickly I hadn’t even processed how many boxes to buy.
Hiap Joo Bakery sells their banana cake in two sizes - large and small. Although the large box looks big at point of purchase, I’d recommend just getting that because there’s actually only 10 slices inside and those will go FAST. Our 10 slices are already down to 2 slices in 5 hours 😂 Already regretting not getting more boxes.
As always, the banana cake is very fragrant. It’s light, soft and fluffy. Just the way I like my banana cakes (prefer these over the dense ones). The cake isn’t dry, but I wouldn’t say they’re moist either. I’d like a moister banana cake but so far I haven’t been able to find one that fits my bill for the texture and taste. Hiap Joo is the closest I’ve been able to find, and it’s a damn good banana cake. For only RM10 a box, it’s a steal. Must buy more boxes next time!
Signature. You'll see nonstop sales for this. One of my favourite banana cakes.
Warm and fluffy Otak-Otak buns 🍞 fresh out from the traditional wood-fired oven, these babies took us by surprise with the amount of generous fillings in every bite. 😍🇲🇾
Stock was running low when we arrived around 11am on a Saturday morning, so we were pretty lucky to snag these together with 2 boxes of their famous banana bread! 🍌🍞 (Will review that later 👌🏻)
The buns had a nice springy texture, which put them at a level wayyyy above commercially made bread. 🙈 Old school food made the traditional way always tastes the best, don't you agree? ✌🏻❤️❤️❤️

My bro/sis-in-law went to M'sia and bought the coconut buns for us!
I read that Hiap Joo Bakery is 1 of only 2 bakeries left in Johor that still uses a century-old wood fired oven to bake their breads and cakes.
The coconut buns has a matte, slightly charred appearance. It has a very slight hint of charred smokiness if you bite off just the charred part of the bread. Otherwise, the bread itself tastes quite normal/ average.
The coconut filling in the bun is generous! The fresh grated coconut roasted with gula melaka filling was not overly sweet, and this filling is what makes the bun comes alive! The coconut shreds/ filling was delicious and not overly sweet. It wasn't dry, but I wish it was a bit more juicy.
Anyway, that was when I ate the buns at room temperature on the 2nd day. I kept them in the refrigerator on the 2nd night and heated them in the morning on the third day. The bun tasted much better. Could smell the fragrance from the bread and the coconut filling. The coconut filling felt slightly more moist as well.
I like the buns way better when they are (re)heated!
They are one of the oldest bakery in Jb and they use clay stove and wood fire to bake their breads and cakes. It is less than $3sgd for a box of warm and aromatic banana cake. I am lucky there’s no queue that day. It’s moist and fragrant however it’s rather sweet for me. But a childhood sweet fix! #malaysia #jb
Freshly baled from oven, bought it at 5 for RM$5. Sadly they can’t allow a mix n mac with other flavour. Bun was on the hard side but probably that is what their bun is meant to be. Shredded coconut was definitely crunchy with a strong fragrance of coconut smell. Would be going back to try their kaya flavour next time!
Banana 🍌 Cake 🎂 香蕉蛋糕 (RM5/ small)
It came in a box 📦 of 5 slices. There’s also big box of 10 slices which cost RM10.
Pillowy soft and not too sweet. One of the must buy items at this tiny bakery.

These are some of the most phenomenal banana breads I’ve ever had. 🍌🍞 On first impression, I thought it was going to be dry to a fault. As soon as I went in for my first bite, I was shocked. Criminally moist is what this was. It was so soft too, much like how I’d imagine clouds in the heaven would feel like. And what added to its enjoyment was how the banana flavour was a median of sugar sweet and fruity sweet…not sure if that makes any sense though? 🤔 Hahaha
Anyway, this was one of those items that actually live up to all its hype. No wonder people buy this one in bulk, especially knowing that it is going for RM5 for five and RM10 for ten. That’s really a steal for such a gem! (7.5/10)
Queue for this simple looking banana cake (RM10) situated in johor! Saw a super long queue upon arrival which makes me more excited to have a try! After taking the first mouth, i came to realise it was super fluffy and acceptable sweet! First reaction: WOW! Really the best banana cake i have ever eaten or tasted so far! Didn regret queuing! They used traditional methods to create and i believe they put in many efforts and use fresh banana to create this super awesome tasty banana cake! Really a whole new level! Its definitely a MUST TRY!
