Visited Gu Zao Ren for dinner and was really impressed! There is a diverse selection of zi char dishes to choose from. We ordered cereal chicken, chai poh omelette, hot plate bean curd and cockles. The cockles are definitely a must order, they are fresh and best eaten with the house chilli.

The other dishes were delicious and paired perfectly with the Taiwanese porridge. Differing from the usual Teochew porridge, it is thicker and has chunks of sweet potato in it. This place is worth visiting if you’re craving for a hearty meal!

Don’t be fooled by the simple presentation—Gu Zao Ren Taiwan Porridge delivers comforting, home-style flavours. The cai po omelette was packed with savoury crunch, and the stir-fried dried shrimp gui miao was a flavourful, crunchy standout. The free-flow rice and porridge were a nice touch. Warm service and cosy vibes round off a satisfying meal.

Had a pleasant dining experience! The food was up to standard—especially enjoyed the fried shrimp with gui miao, which was nicely crunchy and flavorful. The cai po egg was a little on the salty side, but still tasty overall. The other two dishes were also well-prepared and satisfying.

The staff were friendly and helpful, promptly guiding us to our seats and checking in to see if we needed any assistance. Great service to match the food!

#Dinner

I’ve been eating at Gu Zao Ren for years now, and it’s one of those places I always find myself coming back to. Brought a friend along this time, and I couldn’t stop talking about the cockles—even before we ordered. They’re always so fresh, and that house chilli? I don’t know what they put in it, but it’s the kind of spicy that makes you reach for more instead of stopping. Honestly, I could finish that whole plate on my own.

We also got the chai poh omelette, hotplate beancurd, and cereal chicken—nothing fancy, just the usual zi char picks, but there’s something about how they do it here that hits different. The omelette is soft in the middle, crispy on the edges, and every bite has that sweet crunch from the radish. As for the beancurd—it came bubbling on a hotplate, soaked in this rich savoury sauce with minced meat and egg. The tofu was silky inside but had this golden crust that gave it such a nice bite.

And of course, the porridge. Their Taiwanese-style porridge is my comfort food—it’s thicker than the usual Teochew kind, with little chunks of sweet potato that make it feel almost like something your mum would make at home. I never leave without getting at least one bowl.

Chanced upon this restaurant, had a hearty and nicely cooked zichar dishes for dinner. It's delicious.

Delicious and reasonably priced zi char dishes. Cozy place to have dinner with family or friends.
