Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee is located on the 2nd floor of Dunman Food Centre.

Unlike other stalls, their egg noodles are thicker and therefore al dente and more chewy. I also like their wantons are plump and juicy and each plate comes topped with crispy and flavourful pork lard. The char siew though was the disappointing cardboard sort served by most hawker stalls.

The star of this show however is their chilli. It does not simply packs a punch but is literally a fiery kick down the throat for unsuspecting diners. I came without knowing their reputation and was literally crying for a cold sugar cane soon after. It was throat burning spicy and yet so addictive.

If you think that wanton noodles with a fiery chili sauce in the Katong area sounds familiar, Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee is actually helmed by a relative of the owners of Eng's Wanton Noodles which kinda explains why!

Out of the ones that managed to still attract long queues, Dunman Road Char Siew Wanton Mee falls into that category. Priced at either $3.50 or $4.00 per plate, what stands out the most for me is the al dente egg noodles that is able to latch onto the sauce mixture well. The accompany chilli is towards the spicy side, so be cautious if you mix in too much. Besides that, the handmade dumplings are decent while the char siew is nothing to shout about.

Wanton Mee ($3.50)

🍴Unlike the usual wanton mee noodles, their version used a thicker noodles that was a cross between traditional wanton mee and fried noodles. We loved how it was al-dente and springy! Even though there was no visible sauce, the noodles were highly flavourful, especially when tossed with their speciality chilli (super spicy!). We also like that it wasn’t as oily as some of the other notable stalls. The lean chasiew was also well-marinated but nothing to shout about, while the dumplings were yummy with a good soft skin:filling ratio. This shop is apparently affiliated to the famous Eng’s Char Siew Wanton mee, and we would say it is a solid alternative, especially if you love fiery chili and less oil!

This is stall is located on the upper level of dunman food centre. The noodles were slightly thicker than regular wanton mee, and were cooked al dente. They were tossed in a light sauce, which I liked. However, I personally wasn’t a big fan of the thicker noodles. The wantons were not bad, and charsiew decent.

Overall a decent plate of wanton mee! Liked it much better than joochiat ah huat wanton noodle located at the lower level.

Dunman Rd Char Siew on the upper level was a much more humble stall and identifiable by their blue plate. The noodles were springy good. Frankly, the Char Siew and wanton were old school and simple, but the Star was that fiery kick-ass chilli on the noodles. Put everything together this was a satisfying dish with a homely touch.
Ah Huat on the lower level looked more elaborate with a bigger stall space. Identified by its black plate, this was pretty forgettable in taste. Interesting how they command quite a queue compared to the former.
Guessed taste is subjective after all. Nonetheless, our preference is clear.

Opening hours: 0900hrs to 1930hrs, closed on Thursdays. That said, as I talked to the nice lady, do arrive before 6:30pm to prevent your disappointment.
The boss will make your noodle while the wife takes orders. His mom will be in charge of homemaking their wanton. I saw auntie wash their own plates quite hygienically.
Taste wise, it's up to my liking along with the just nice springiness of the egg noodles, juicy wanton, sweet charsiew. Simple but satisfying by sesame oil and soysauce based dressing. The wanton is filled with pork, guess there's no flour in it. Nothing to shout out to the charsiew tho. Generous portion of veggies btw. Please request pork lard.
What makes this really stand out is the spicy chili and prices that they offer (small/big $3/$3.5 respectively).
