Salted Egg Chicken Bao

$5.50 · 49 Reviews

We have been to Bao Makers on a few occasions and we have never failed to be impressed by their gourmet baos! Pictured here are the 3 baos we tried today - the salted egg yolk chicken bao, the mala beef bao and the chilli crab bao!

The chilli crab bao was the best and we liked that the bao was essentially a deep-fried mantou and the restaurant was really generous with the crab meat filling. The sauce was really on point too and it tastes the same as a chilli crab dish that you can get at restaurants!

We also loved the salted egg yolk chicken bao, as the salted egg sauce was pretty concentrated and went well with the piece of fried chicken! It is also great that the sauce isn't very runny so you wouldn't get too messy eating it!

The mala beef bao, however, was a little disappointing as we felt that the mala flavour was a little too subtle and we would have loved a little more of the numbing and spicy sensation. The beef was a little tough too! 😰

Although the baos were delicious, we have to say that they were really expensive, with the chilli crab bao costing $4.50++ and the other two costing $4.30++! For the small size of the baos, we think that they were really pricey and it would be great if the baos could be bigger!

Bao Platter ($32/8) ⭐️ 3.5/5 ⭐️
Passionfruit grapefruit tonic ($7.50) ⭐️ 3.5/5 ⭐️
Singapore latte peng ($7.50) ⭐️ 3.5/5 ⭐️
🍴Enjoyable bao platter that came with 8 different flavours - chilli crab, salted egg chicken, salmon mentaiko, pork belly, mala beef, blackened chicken, truffle mushroom, and veggie - in soft fluffy baos. The large variety makes it great for sharing as there’s something for everyone!

Our favourites were the fragrant truffle mushroom bao, tender pork belly marinated in Chinese spices, and charcoal fried chicken that was crispy on the outside while juicy inside with a flavourful garlic mayo sauce. We also appreciated the generous amounts of chili crab in the crispy mantou. We were less fans of the mala beef, finding it to be on the salty side and without any spicy kick (we didn’t realize it was mala if not for the description). The salted egg chicken was also on the sweeter rather than saltier side, and we would have preferred for a richer and less creamy mentaiko.

The Singapore latte was an interesting take on cold brew with a more traditional roasted coffee flavour, fresh milk, and enjoyable soft and chewy house made espresso jelly. We also enjoyed the refreshing yakult-based grapefruit, orange, passionfruit tonic albeit it being a tad on the sweeter side.

The Chilli Crab Bao remains my all-time favourite! 💕 Featuring deep-fried bun sandwiching fresh crabmeat 🦀 with garlicky & tomato-ey 🍅 Singapore style chilli sauce, this was simply irresistible! 🤤

I ordered a few of their baos for dinner, including the salted egg chicken bao, chilli crab bao and belly of pork bao, starting with $4+ each.

Their salted egg chicken bao uses steamed sesame bun, signature salted egg sauce and seasoned fried chicken. For takeaway this, do eat immediately as the bun itself would stick to the paper wrap.

I like their chilli crab bao that wrap with deep fried bun. Inside is the fresh crabmeat with Singapore style chilli sauce. This one can get messy when eating as the crabmeat would come out easily.

Lastly the belly of pork bao which wasn’t enjoy much because the meat itself was harder to chew. Wrap with steamed white bun that comes with stewed pork belly and fried garlic.

I’ve always enjoyed Bao Makers’ bao creations, so when they reached out with these new bao kits I was 20/10 stoked 🥺💕 What we received was 2 beautiful boxes of frozen bao ingredients that’ll stay good for a month, so you can reheat them any time the craving hits. It’s really simple and fuss-free, and the instructions are pretty much idiot-proof: all you need is a microwave and an oven/air fryer. For now they’ve got 2 flavours available, their Salted Egg Chicken ($13.90+) and Chilli Crab ($15.90+), and both are fabulous — coincidentally my favourites of their baos actually. I can’t recommend this highly enough honestly cause they tasted as good at home as I remember them to be at the restaurant. Super important imho.

Too many baos I had a hard time deciding, but was rly pleased with my trio - Salted Egg Chicken, Chilli Crab Fried Mantou n Blackened Chicken Bao. Surprisingly like the Blackened Chicken the most bcos of the soft sesame bun, grilled chicken that wasn’t bitter like how I expected n the house blend garlic mayo. Slurps!!! 😋 +$2 during dinner for the Triple Bao Set so I skipped it cos who cares for the salad anw hahahaa

Starting off with the signature baos, we really enjoyed the Chilli Crab Bao. Mixed with the chilli crab chunks, the chilli crab sauce was done really well, and the mantou was perfectly deep fried. The Salted Egg Chicken Bao was served with a steamed bun instead and wasn’t nearly as impressive. The downside was that the portions were quite tiny. We were pleasantly surprised that aside from the baos, the Salmon Mentaiko Roll & Teriyaka Beef Steak Rice Bowl were pretty tasty. On the side note, I loved the minimalist interiors! Overall, the quality of the food was decent but prices are steep. If anything, I would return for the baos.

What's better to eat at BAO Makers than their BAOs! 💕 With a wide variety of flavours, you are bound to be wpoilt for choice! 😍😍😍 Here's what we tried:
