When Iโm back in NTU ๐ซ, @dams.ntu at Canteen 1 has a Western Cuisine stall that gives me Chicken Katsudon ($6) cravings. Your spoon shovels in first for a spoonful of miso cheese on Japanese grains ๐ฅ It's a mouthful of appetising saltish savouriness and for an extra dollar, you also get hokto mushrooms which enhances it with earthiness. Nestled between the shrooms ๐ and rice ๐ is an onsen egg waiting to be punctured. Tear open the yolk to let flow a stream of yellow ๐ณ that adds creamy richness to your mouthfuls. The main ingredient yet is the generous chunks of breaded chicken ๐ which are fried till crispy. Though the batter is bland, it doesnโt assault you with greasiness and it wraps around dense but tender meat. If youโre in school, this is one comforting bowl to fill ya.
This infamous NTU-grown humble western food has been around for quite long, from canteen 4 to canteen 1 with timely menu revamps. It was my first time trying their chicken katsu but it was disappointing with a lack of seasoning although the chicken was fried till crispy goodness.
Sambal spaghetti (used to be penne ๐ซ) today was disappointing because the highlight was about the sauce! The sauce was a little over gooey and insufficient which was unusual. But this is a must-order every time I'm here.
Garlic fried rice is something new on the menu, so we decided to give it a try. Thought it could be more flavourful though. Seemed like something was lacking, but the garlic flavour wasn't overpowering and was just right.
We had the following add-ons:
- battered fish ($1.20)
- mushrooms
- onsen egg
(Mushrooms & eggs were complementary because we waited for 25mins for our order as we came too early ๐ถ)
Don't be scam by their Sambal Mayo. It's not Sambal and not spicy at all. For the spicy haters, fear not!
The breaded chicken is nice and warm but its a little tasteless. Perhaps it was meant to compliment the Sambal Mayo. French fries seems average and cold.

Worth the calories? For the price of $5, I can probably get better chicken cutlet elsewhere.

Back to Dam's Kitchen @ NTU Canteen 1 again! This time round, Surf & Turf! So you get fish and chicken, in a plate ๐ best of both worlds ๐ You can choose to have it with fries, mashed potato or garlic fried rice. I chose garlic fried rice, it's not bad for its flavour but I find the texture of the fried rice a bit too clumpy. Still, all is good! #sgfood #ntufood #ntucanteen1 #damskitchen #surfnturf #westernjapanesefusion #burpplesg #burpple #burpplefood #feedmefood2017 #singaporefoodie
The grilled chicken is tasteless inside, perhaps due to the overly short (or no) marination period, there wasnโt anything fantastic about texture and the only comment I can give is โit is not rawโ. The satay sauce is tasty, and I could use more of it to make the meat tastier. The mash potato was awesome though, soft, fluffy creamy with a hint of the delighful flavour of cheese. For the best experience, include all the ingredients โ meat, sauce, mushroom and the mash into each bite. โข

Recommendation: Marinate the chicken longer with the satay marinate + Grilling it till the skin is crispier. They may want to consider the patty of the satay burger from TheQuarters for a good rendition of a similar dish.#nomnomsg #whati8today #ntufoodforthough #ntudac #openricesg #burpple#food #foodporn #chicken #satay #modsin #singapore #western #fusion #university #diner #review #igfood #foodig @dams_ntucan4
