Chinatown Food Street has been revamped recently and introduced a few new stalls including the famous King of Fried Rice.
This time I ordered their mala fried rice, which still has the wok hey taste but sadly the mala taste wasnβt strong enough for me. But overall is still spicy enough especially after adding the chilli sauce.
I didn't expect even 50 Cents Fest would do a media drop, but we are in an era where nothing is impossible and Impossible Is Nothing (thanks, Adidas). (Clockwise from top left) Glutinous rice, salted vegetable duck soup, chrysanthemum tea (?), tapioca noodles, ang ku kueh. They're 50 cents, don't hold your breath.
Annual 50cents Food Fest happening on 27&28 July 2019!!
A must get is the Kong Ba Bao from Beng Hiang Restaurant @ 2x50cents π
The 4th edition of The Fifty Cents Fest sees the beloved festival go for a Hokkien theme this year.
Everything is priced from a humble S$0.50 to no more than S$3.00, and visitors will get to taste traditional Hokkien dishes β some of which are rare finds these days!
Some of the ideas that we found really value for money includes:
Kong Ba Bao/ Braised Pork Belly Bun (2 x $0.50)
Buddha Jumps Over The Wall (6 x $0.50)
Fried Black Hokkien Noodles η¦ε»Ίηι’ (2 x $0.50)
Oyster Cake ($0.50)
Red Date Drink ($0.50)
Some of these finds, including the Buddha Jump over the Wall and Fried Hokkien Mee can only be found tucked away in a corner of Chinatown Food Street, in a hidden Hokkien roadside stall. So... keep your eyes peeled for it!
Thank you @qingxiangsqx for the invite, @wom_sgpr and @chinatownfoodstreet for the hospitality.

Was at the #The50CentsFest at @ChinatownFoodStreet this afternoon! Only till tomorrow from 11am-11pm do you enjoy tasting portions of heritage local favourites.
.
I loved my Yam Paste and Hakka Abacus Seed and the boy relieved his childhood with Hokkien Rickshaw Noodles and Pork Leg Bee Hoon. Cool off with a wash down of cooling Bird's Nest Drink and Traditional Rainbow Bread with Ice Cream!
If you have missed last yearβs event, 1950s-themed fiesta.; you certainly canβt miss this yearβs travel back to the golden era of 1980s Singapore. Whatβs the coolest thing? There is no inflation at The 50 Cents Fest, even after β30 yearsβ. All food and drinks are priced from as little as 50 cents!!!

π Especially if cooked as omelette or boiled and eaten with vinegar on bare hands! π€€
This stall in Chinatown Food Street makes, so far, my favourite Oyster Omelette. Moist yet has enough crispy parts which creates great texture to the palate. Deep into the chili sauce and ohh so shiok! π (Improving in my use of Singlish term ehh?! π) #burpple #oysteromelette #chinatownfoodstreet
Craving for local delights? Make a bee line to Chinatown food street. The area transports people back to China, filled with rich heritage and delicious food. Soak in the atmosphere and let the tastebuds dance in celebration. The black carrot cake($4.50/6) is exceptionally delicious. The stall had won a well -deserved award for excellent culinary skills.
HAHA π
Sooo many people came and it was crazily crowded but because I really have to be part of this, I must overcome my claustrophobia! ππ»
The shells, fried rice and oyster omelette are all $1 per portion. Well, it's not really 50 cents tho! Only the Bird's Nest drink was 50 cents. π But it was all worth it! My $4 went a long way already. π

Was pleasantly surprised to find something so much better than expected along this touristy stretch. Lots of plump, fresh oysters on a bed of gooey, eggy base! π Make sure you get extra zippy chilli sauce; it was essential to scythe through all that richness!
The fried carrot cake was delicious. It was not too oily and the sambal complemented it very well.
Pulut Hitam Creme Brulee
Steamed Black Glutinous Rice with Creamy Creme Brulee, a mixture of texture in every moutful.
Chef Jimmy Chok's Creation.
It is presented in a colorful way with smoke from dry ice under the dish and surrounded with colorful flowers. Great dessert but a bit heavy to finish with.
Last course of the Mod-Local Noir Dinner.
Venue : Chinatown Food Street, 335 Smith Street, Singapore 050335
Superior-stock Baked Whole Prawn with Stewed Noodles
Juicy Whole Prawn skilfully cooked with Prawn Broth paired with Silky Smooth Stewed Noodles.
I think this is worst dish out of the all the dishes served tonight. Firstly the prawns look rather dried up and not too fresh. There is barely any meat in the prawns. The noodles is cold and is too mushy in texture. It is quite jala after a few mouthful.
Ninth course of the Mod-Local Noir Dinner.
Venue : Chinatown Food Street, 335 Smith Street, Singapore 050335
Braised Duck Yam Quinoa
Slow-Braised Duck Leg to reveal the Caramlised Essence of the Meat and Braising Stock paired with Healthy Quinoa Grains and an Enchanting Homemade Chilli Crumble.
Chef Jimmy Chok's Creation.
Of all the dishes served tonight, I feel that this is best out of all. I have never eaten quinoa which tastes so flavourful on its own. I could have bowls of it with just the sauce if I am not already so full. Even the aunties who are sitting next to me who have never eaten quinoa like it very much. Another surprise is the chilli crumble which looks like crispy fried chopped garlic at first glance. It has texture like very fine hae bee hiam (Spicy dried shrimps sambal), but without the spicy taste. It tastes addictive, which I wish it could have been served more and goes quite well with the tender and juicy duck meat.
Eighth course of the Mod-Local Noir Dinner.
Venue : Chinatown Food Street, 335 Smith Street, Singapore 050335
Charred Chicken and Beef Satay Wrap
Flavourful Meats layered with Crispy Beancurd Skin and Aromatic Peanut Sauce wrapped in Handmade Egg Crepe.
It is quite difficult to eat as a wrap as the crepe is a bit small. Nice combination, although feels that the meat could be much tender and there is no char texture on the meat.
Seventh course of the Mod-Local Noir Dinner.
Venue : Chinatown Food Street, 335 Smith Street, Singapore 050335
Chendol Pop
A Delightful Local Taste Ice Popsicle
It reminds one of Potong ice cream but with a homemade version way. It is served in a cup which I spend sometimes figuring out how to take it out. Would be better if the server has stopped to explain a bit, instead of rushing through. It melts quite fast anyway. I would prefer a stronger coconut milk taste.
Sixth course of the Mod-Local Noir Dinner.
