Recently, my friend and I indulged in a weekend high tea buffet serving Peranakan cuisine, and we left feeling happily full.

From the atmosphere and costs to the food, every aspect was justifiable. It was the most valuable buffet compared to their normal weekday and weekend buffets, as it was the cheapest of the three and served almost all the dishes.

The buffet featured finger foods like DIY Kueh Pie Tee, allowing you to make your own pie tee with a mountainous topping. Another unique item was Chempedak Fritter, a fruit fritter tasting similar to jackfruit. They also offered standard dim sum items.

The mains included Nonya Mee Siam, Laksa, Nasi Lemak, and sides like Fried Chicken Wings, Babi Ponteh Kong Bak Pau, Sambal Telor, and Sambal Lady's Finger. I particularly enjoyed the Fried Chicken Wings; the marination was deep, and the wings were fried to a perfect golden brown, with an aroma that lingered from the meat to the bone. They were so good that I had quite a large plate of them. The Laksa was another pleasing dish, with its smooth, creamy, and coconutty curry complemented by dried shrimp chili, making it a wonderfully fragrant and slurpy delight. Unfortunately, the Babi Ponteh was a tad salty and the meat wasn't tender enough, and the Mee Siam was also somewhat salty.

For desserts, I tried some Kueh, which were quite normal to me, but I'm not a fan of Kueh, so I can't comment much. The Pulut Hitam was rich, thick, and creamy but tasted slightly burnt, possibly due to inconsistent stirring. Chilled Soya Beancurd and Lemongrass Jelly with Aloe Vera were pure bliss. The watermelon was sweet and juicy. They also offered Mingo Ice Cream. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks of the day were included in the buffet.

There are some hits and misses. But overall, I would say the food is decent for the price we pay after burpple discount. We liked the kueh pie tie nonya food rojak, lemongrass chicken wing and beef rendang. Nice quiet place inside NUS.

Chili Padi Nonya Cafe 03/08/19

Overall, I would concur that this buffet is somewhat worth its money for the VARIETY offered. However, it is definitely not worth one's calories in terms of the quality of food presented. If this food was presented as part of a buffet catering service, I would be pleasantly surprised but considering that its a buffet restaurant instead, I expected a lot more. Many of the dishes really did not taste fresh, especially their fruit cakes and kueh lapis at the dessert section. Would strongly recommend the restaurant to improve on the quality of all of their dishes first before working on the variety.
Price: 7/10 (For the variety)
Taste: 3/10 (I was craving for quality Peranakan food the next day)
Overall: 4/10 (Even if you are in the area, I will not recommend)

Chilli padi weekend high tea

Faultless fried chicken that was well flavoured and fried till crips but still maintaining a good moisture inside .

The chicken gets snapped up every time there’s a new tray but the replenishment is fast without sacrificing the quality of the food .

Probably one of the best fried chicken I have eaten so far 😊

The nasi lemak rice 🍚 served could have been improved though - a little too clumpy . So good excuse to cut the carbs and load the protein 🤣

Although Chilli Padi is actually better known as a Food Caterer, their in-house buffet is not one to sneer at! To be frank, the quality and taste of the food were way above standard catering, or any regular buffets at this price-point. Not only were the dishes of authentic peranakan flavour, even their furniture screams nonya! Must go back soon. 😁😁😁 - 👴🏻 #burpple
