[TELOK AYER, SINGAPORE] @theflyingsquirrelsg may not sound like a place that sells Japanese food, but I can tell you they do whip up a good dishes. Finally tried their lunch sets and although it isn't cheap, it was a satisfying meal nonetheless.
Their Summer Chirashi Set 🐟 ($26) comes with a pretty sizable bowl with an appetizer, salad and miso soup. The chirashi bowl had quite an assortment of sashimi chunks, including one of my favourites: the Hamachi. All sashimi chunks were really fresh and they were already seasoned with shoyu. These were really enjoyable with their rice, as their rice was perfectly seasoned with vinegar. The touch of freshly grated wasabi was crucial, as it provided a fresh aromatic dimension without giving much heat. Sides and all were good but nothing mindblowing.
We had Yuzu Seafood Ceviche Japanese Tacos 🌮 ($18 for a pair) and it was good though I wished it was bigger.
The vibes were quite interesting, as it was literally a hole-in-the-wall at a corner of a street. It would say it was good but definitely not mindblowing. Do go if you don't mind spending on some quality Japanese food!
Fresh sushi and sashimi platter at TFS! 🍣
Then came the assortment of makis that we ordered. The TFS Signature Maki is a platter of their signature makis all in one plate, perfect option for those of you who can't make a decision. We also gave their Ebi Fry Maki and Spicy Salmon Maki a try, which we slowly savour throughout the night, with accompanying drinks and friendly conversations - no better way to end off the night!
A hole in the wall (quite literally), this restaurant is hidden along an alley on Amoy Street and you'd quite possibly walk on by if you haven't been paying attention or intentionally looking for it.
We ordered a couple of dishes to share and started off with the Truffled Organic Ribeye Steak, which is a 200g NZ organic ribeye cooked to medium rare, topped with 5-6g of shaved truffles, accompanied by a bowl of grilled vegetables. Spotting a nice shade of copper red, this was flavourful and tender to say the least.

Salmon Sashimi - Really fresh and tender! The only thing about this is that it didn’t come as cold as I liked it to be!
Garlic Butter Clam Udon - I love love the sauce! I thought it would be overpowering and gelat, but somehow they manage to pull it off. The sauce is creamy and garlicky, and goes really well with the chewy udon! Highly recommend to try! :)
Wagyu beef udon soup - Loved this as well! The soup is so so light, and the aftertaste is so unique. The beef taste a bit like a beef patty, but it’s sooo juicy and tender and flavourful. Also not overly heavy and gelat!!!
Japanese ice cream waffle - The waffle had a unique aftertaste and the ice cream was very creamy!!
Overall, a pleasant experience! A really cozy cafe and the waiters there were all very very professional!
