The tonkotsu was well-executed with tender pork loin (loved that it was lean while still juicy) and juicy prawn. Coated in thin crisp and flaky Panko crust. Choose between classic rice or their healthier ‘brown rice’ which was an enjoyable mix of chewy rice and barley.
Worth the price (portion is generous).
Staff were welcoming ☺️
Miss K and I don't usually mind paying the extra buck for the daikon oroshi "add-on" (finely grated daikon) which usually comes with a light tangy vinegrette sauce such as the ponzu sauce.
The subtly sweet daikon and refreshing tangy and zingy ponzu sauce is a perfect foil to the heavy meaty flavours of the meat and the umami of the pork fat, and literally sets our taste buds alight.
Onkei's tonkatsu is of a good size. Quality-wise, I think that it is good but a tad lower than some of the other tonkatsu restaurants which serve a more premium breed of pork as it is noticeably less juicy (not dry or tough for sure!) and less fatty albeit with a higher price tag.
I love that besides white rice, Onkei also serves Japanese Hokkaido multi-grain rice at no extra cost and yes, it's free flow!
Onkei Tonkatsu is a relatively new chain of casual Japanese restaurant which specialises in tonkatsu cutlets at a more affordable price point.
Our original intention was to check out Onkei Tonkatsu #burpplebeyond set deal which comes with two katsu sets, chicken karaage and kaki fry. Miss K however had other plans and swiftly zeroed in on their cheese tonkatsu instead.
We liked that there is a thick, gooey and creamy layer of cheese in their pork cutlets unlike some chains which pay mere lip service. The pork cutlet is thick and juicy but I would love to have a bit more fat in it. Prices-wise, it is about 10~20% cheaper than Saboten, Ma Maison or Tonkichi but they do not stinge on "fringe benefits" such as free flow rice, tonjiru soup and shredded lettuce.
I do recommend Onkei Tonkatsu for a good and comparatively affordable meal of Japanese katsu!
Portion is generous. Ambience is quiet and cozy. Tonkatsu is pretty decent too. 👍🏻 final bill about $51 for 2 persons after using the $39.90++ 1-for-1 deal
Had the burpple beyond set. It was value for money as it came with a karage, oyster, prawn tempura, pork loin tonkatsu, rice and refillable soup. Tonkatsu was flavourful and it was not oily.
