More Reviews of good food at Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen & Gallery

Tisโ€™ been a long, long while since Iโ€™ve had some Peranakan food, and Old Bibikโ€™s was on hand to very conveniently rectify that. Theyโ€™ve got solo operators well covered with their weekday lunch specials, which comprise of the main, a dessert & a drink.โ €

Mutton rendang is a pretty rare sight, so when I saw that on the menu, I ordered it with little hesitation. I gotta say, I wish more people did mutton rendang as good as Old Bibik, because this was absolutely ambrosial. The redolent rendang paste is scintillatingly spicy & chock full of herbs & spices, and the strong heady aroma is quite the scent to behold.โ €
โ €
Flavour wise, itโ€™s deeply savoury, with a heavy handed undertone of lemongrass duking it out with the other spices for prominence in the dish. Itโ€™s indecently inundated with a potpourri of spices, and they all come together to mask any gaminess the mutton possess. Speaking of the mutton, the meat was acceptably tender and each bite was fully flavoured by the sapid, spicy rendang curry/sauce.โ €
โ €
The achar on the side is surprisingly spicy & awesomely acidic. The pickled vegetables slice right through the salty, spicy rendang to provide a respite from the spicy, savoury onslaught, and is a great palate cleanser. The rice & egg were nice, but were doubtlessly & obviously second strings to the juggernaut that is the rendang.โ €

For $12.90 a set nett, itโ€™s a delicious deal that should definitely be sampled a couple of times. For science, of course.

Stir fried chewy elastic squid with spam of garlic and coriander. Quite salty.๐Ÿ˜

Chicken braised in kepayang(buah keluak) with tamarind and kaffir lime leaves. A traditional distinct robust Peranakan dish. I find that their version is kind of sweet, covering up the spiciness in it. If you up to try the poisonous buah keluak nut, please do, its an acquired taste that only experiencing it will understand the deep flavour about it.

Deep-fried crispy yet fluffy omelette cooked with prawn, vegetables and salty chinchalok but the taste of chinchalok isn't obvious. Dip into the Kicap Manis for an enhanced experience.๐Ÿ˜‹

Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen is one of the few Halal-certified Nonya restaurants in Singapore, ever since they started out in 2012 as a food stall at the former Lavender Food Square. Their new location now packages traditional Peranakan dishes in a simple eatery at very wallet friendly prices, with set meals as low as $6.90. Burppler jankliciouz "Was happy to have tried this tender Signature Beef Rendang by which has been slow-cooked in various spices for hours." Treat yourself to their Goreng Pisang with vanilla ice cream for dessert - it's worth the calories!

Good decision to leave this to the last as it's rather filling. Came in expecting something exciting but got a really pleasant, mild, homely version which I had absolutely no complaints about. Extremely tender especially considering the cut of beef, but it's a rather mild version so do mix in the sambal at the side

Essentially popiah with lettuce and cuttlefish, but it's surprising that the jicama keeps some of its crunchiness even when it's cooked. Btw their sambal is frigging fiery

Pretty good chicken rendang from this shop that used to be at lavender Hawker. The rendang sauce was rich with spices and lighter on the coconut milk.

However , the portion of chicken was on a smaller side .

Good but perhaps not sufficiently attractive enough to travel all the way for it.

Comes with 2 small servings of rice. The chilli is quite spicy and sedap. Not a bad deal with no GST and service charge!

Banana deep fried in crispy batter with vanilla ice cream, and is surprisingly much better than what I expected!

[Ju Hu Cha S$10] - An old Penang Peranakan recipe: shredded turnip slow cooked with an assortment of vegetables and dried cuttlefish. Sweet & juicy, one of my favorite definitely!

Like he said, the clear soup was sweetness itself, probably because there's "kepiting" or crab in the stock. But it was the exceptional standard of toppings that left a real impression. For the price, I was surprised by the presence of abalone (may not be the real thing but it sure tasted good) alongside fishballs and fish cake of such excellent quality.

The stingray tasted very chewy, like a tough chicken who made it to command school during NS. The titular sauce was like the soya sauce you get with steamed fish during Chinese wedding dinners, only slightly saltier and with a badass spiciness from the chilli padi. Shiok. 4/5

Nyonya cuisine are always uniquely intriguing, aromatic and tasty in its own way. A cross culture of Malay and Chinese ingredients and techniques to produce such deep and complex delicacy.
Here we are gathered at @oldbibik to have a meal and catchup.๐Ÿค“ Probably the Only #Halal Peranakan restaurant that I know of as the best of my knowledge.
