Malaysia, Truly Asia (Johor Bahru)
Not all Google reviews can be trusted, this place got a 4.4 rating with near 1,000 reviews but after trying their mee siam and duck egg char kway teow, and a couple of drinks, this place probably is a 3.5-4.0 rating instead. Service was efficient though prices are on the higher side, but for me taste was the letdown. Whilst it is a no pork no lard restaurant, which probably compromised the taste somewhat, the duck egg char kway teow was lacking the smoky wok hei and savouriness. The mee siam on the other hand tastes like it came out from a microwave as the vermicelli lacks the spiciness and tanginess.
Dropped by The Founders Cafe after hearing rave reviews about their food, and as this was our second food stop, we shared a Katsu Curry Fried Chicken Bagel. The combination is somewhat unique as there is crunchy cabbage in it, and the fried chicken (if my tastebuds don’t fail me) is actually a shrimp paste marinated as it had the hae jeong gai taste. Paired with a curry sauce with a fried egg sandwiched between a bagel, this is quite enjoyable, especially with the mixed fries of potato and sweet potato.
This coffeeshop has both indoor and outdoor makeshift stalls selling a wide variety of food from grilled seafood to rice and noodles. It’s like an ecosystem of varying cuisines and culture as you can be sitting in front of a nasi lemak stall and just beside it, the stall is selling Chinese dumplings. There are both indoor and alfresco seating but since this place comes alive in the evening, do grab a table outdoors and enjoy the evening breeze while feasting on your food. Overall, the food is not amazingly delicious, but for the price you pay, you couldn’t complain much as it’s definitely value-for-money and comforting food.

Yes, it’s crowded (due to Jay Chou’s visit) and nicely furnished with a garden theme, but the food is definitely not one of its best strengths. The Melbourne’s Signature Hotcake (RM 23) is supposedly to mimic the famous ricotta hot cake in Australia and if this is how it’s supposed to taste like, I might have to just postpone my visit to Australia even further. There is no ricotta flavour or whatsoever, there are raw pea sprouts being added as a decoration which I have no idea what it brings to the dish, and there are supposed to be blueberries infused within the hotcake, but we found little traces of it. As for the Quesadilla Breakie (RM 25), this is a creamy spicy tomyum quesadilla that has scrambled eggs and lots of Sriracha aioli being added into it. To me, everything is competing with one another for flavour and it is way too saucey.

Oregin Ji Ke is famous for their takeaway bubble tea in their recyclable plastic bottles and they mainly focus on brewed tea that is focus on improving well-being and health. Pictured is the Ice Drop Oolong Tea (RM 11), which is totally the type of unsweetened black tea that I like for its slight bitterness after-taste.

However, do note that only around 10% of the tenants have opened for business at the mall, so don’t expect to have a jolly time there.

Comparing this to R&B’s and Tiger Sugar’s brown sugar milk with boba, The Alley’s version is slightly muted and not the in-your-face brown sugar flavour/aroma as the rest. It is actually very palatable and you won’t get sick of it after finishing the cup.

In frame is the Milk Tea (RM 20) version that comes with black milk tea mousse, black tapioca pearls, crumble, nuts and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The warm and fluffy pancake is almost air-like texture while the other accompaniments help create varying textures in your mouth from each bite. Overall, an interesting yet delightful dessert.

With a garden-esque theme, it feels like stepping into someone’s garden canopy and having a great meal. Besides their array of artisanal brewed teas, there’s the Gyutan (RM 28), shoyu and sesame oil marinated beef tongue slices served over jasmine pearl rice that has been added with Japanese furikake. Another dish that’s worth considering would be their Salmon Sunrise (RM 28), a slab of herb crusted salmon served over roasted herb potatoes, wilted organic bayam and poached egg with the tip of mountain sitting some seaweed and ebiko.

This tastes very similar to any other 葱油饼 that I can get in Taiwan just that it has added ingredients such as chicken patty or chicken bolognese. I will gladly take our roti prata any day over this.

When it comes to lunch hours, prepare to wait a bit as throngs of people will flock there for a satisfying meal. Popular items include their famous roasted duck and honey-glazed pork aka char siew. The duck comes with a crispy skin while the meat has no hint of gaminess. As for the char siew, don’t not be taken aback by its dark and glistering outlook; it’s the result from using honey, not artificial coloring. Meat was melt in your mouth tender with a good fat ratio in between.

The new Matcha Latte is something that I would go back for, for it’s bittersweet flavour, creamy consistency and earthy aroma.

With nicely charred ends and a sweet spicy marinate from the kicap manis, you will probably end up finishing the entire rack by yourself. Better still, ditch all the forks and knives, and use the best cutlery that you have all along, your hands.

Most pork ribs outside will probably make you feel queasy at the halfway mark but this is not the case for the signature pork ribs at Naughty Nuri's. You would have probably heard about it if you have travelled to Bali before or even tried it back in Singapore, but do you know that they have an outlet just across the causeway at 1/3 of the price you would have paid in Singapore? Best yet, all the ribs are grilled with charcoal to ensure you get the authentic smokey experience as the original in Bali! When served, do give the calamansi a squeeze onto the ribs which will help cut through the "heaviness" of this dish. The signature pork ribs cost RM50.
