A decent and nice plate of char kuay teow. I find it unbelievable that I can still find this at $3 in 2023. Plenty of cockles given for a $4 portion!
For those who prefer the wetter version Char Kway Teow, there is Lai Heng at Shun Fu Food Center. The queues can be very long during peak hours but they have a very effective system of order taking and like clockwork, the queue moves quickly.
Ample wok heat there in the CKT when it is served although it dissipates rather quickly as well. This version has chye sim besides the usual bean sprouts and I noticed their cockles are more normal in size compared with some of the pathetic miniscule ones used at other stalls. For $5, you get a pretty decent portion of CKT.
Go ahead and add an Otah which is quite unique for CKT in Singapore.
Now in the hands of the 4th generation since its founding just after World War II, they've been consistently serving a family-recipe wet savoury sweet version of char kway teow paired with otah(!).

Tossed with dark sweet soy sauce, gooey egg, and crisp bean sprouts, the kway teow / wide flat rice noodles and cylindrical yellow wheat noodles take on a moist slippery oily texture, with robust savoury sweet salty eggy flavour.

Garnished with tender fish cake, crisp chye sim / chinese flowering cabbage, juicy blood cockles, and chewy lup cheong / dried cured pork sausage, the glisterning plate is a greasy yet delicious mess.

Regulars seem to like pairing it with their SGD $1 otah grilled in banana leaf, which lends a spicy sweet kick.

One of the few places that have decent fried kuay teow at such a good price. Wok hei was faint but the serving of fish cake and lup cheong were generous.
Probably the best in Singapore.
Sufficiently moist, not greasy , a good balance of sweet and savoury . And generous portions - what more can one ask for ?
Unbeknownst to most , the son of the owner of lai Heng is also frying up a good plate of fried kwey Teow at Sembawang Hills Hawker .
I tried it once without knowing the connection and it was really good too !
For the pricing, the portion is quite generous. Though it was lacking the wok-hei fragrant, I like that it is not too sweet and well balanced. In the delicious plate of char kway teow, one can find lup cheong, egg, bean sprout, cockles and fish cake.
