Here's a Mexican restaurant to nail your next weekend brunch with the girls. Nestled in a terrace garden, La Mexicana's beautiful location grants it peace and quiet in the otherwise bustling city. The highlight here comes from the bar: a potent Sangria De Jamaica (from RM35) buzzing with tequila, red wine and fragrant Jamaican flower extract. Get this in a jug for RM170 — it's more value for money, not to mention a lot more fun! For a bite to eat, turn to their tacos. Served in threes, the moderate portion will be just right for one. The Tacos Carmela (RM27) sees prawns slathered in chipotle chilli sauce, topped with a slice of avocado on a soft corn tortilla. While minimal on fillings, this runs big on flavour. The vegan Tacos Nopalitos (RM30) is also worth trying, for it sees the use of cactus leaf alongside Ancho chilli and their homemade cheese. Hearty enough to replace protein, the firm, crunchy cactus leaf has a pleasant flavour likened to beans. Note: The restaurant will soon be shifting, so keep an eye out for updates on their website!

At the super zen La Mexicana hidden in the terrace behind Hock Choon, the tacos are super simple but impressively delicious. I asked for a recommendation and immediately got this Tacos Carmela. Was sold at the mention of prawns. These are slathered in a flavour-packed chipotle chilli sauce. That tiny wedge of avocado also helps give the dish a hint of creaminess, just what it needs.
