More Reviews of good food at Chalk Farm (Paragon)

Chalk Farm has been one of the spots that we do keep at the back of our mind when we are craving for an artisanal Kueh Salat — they are one of the very early players in the scene that ventured into serving up artisanal Kueh in the days where individually-run bakeries have become a little more artisanal than they used to. There was one point of time that Chalk Farm’s original Kueh Salat had pretty much become an icon for the brand — this is despite Chalk Farm being primarily an establishment that does artisanal cream cakes available in slices for retail; this exact Kueh Salat also saw a Durian version that was eventually spun off from it as well. It has been a while since we had properly taken a look at the selection of cakes that Chalk Farm has to offer — this was when we got to know that they had started to offer a Gula Melaka Salat that is yet another spin-off from their original Kueh Salat. Unlike the original Kueh Salat, the Gula Melaka Salat come with a brown hued mousse layer rather than a green coloured one; the mousse in the Gula Melaka Salat featuring Gula Melaka rather than a Pandan one that is found in the typical Kueh Salat that they have to offer.

With that in mind, the Gula Melaka Salat is definitely one for the Gula Melaka lovers; the deep, earthy notes of molasses is particularly evident — not too sweet, but a good balance of everything that matches well with the equally subtly saltish glutinous rice layer below. It also comes as no surprise that the glutinous rice layer also features specks of blue just like the original Kueh Salat that they have to offer; likely coloured from blue pea flower. With the Gula Melaka Salat being priced the same as their usual Kueh Salat at $8.20 a slice, some might see it as a little high-priced but its worth the premium price tag it asks for considering it is also a larger slice after all. That being said, these are best to be gotten earlier in the day so that the mousse layer is still fresh and doesn’t get too “eggy” from sitting around the display for way too long throughout the day.

Absolutely ridiculous price for the quality.

It's not pure durian flesh on top, it's some half custardy thing and the durian flavour was thus not enough. Glutinous rice was ok but not too strong either

Waiting for a quite awhile, no response when we want to pay at the cashier.

One popular cake shop in town, the cake we tried was of pretty good quality!

We had the Pandan Init (~$11.40) which may be quite expensive, but they did gave a big slice. The cake was rich, full of pandan, coconut and gula melaka flavours!

Instead of putting cream in between the pandan sponge cake, they put coconut shavings soaked in gula melaka, which also adds to a variety of textures in the cake.

The cream itself is thicker than usual, and I suspect they whip coconut milk with pandan juice. Lovely!

Actually looking forward to try their other cakes!

Huge slice, can share between 2 easily.

Basically an ondeh ondeh cake that's done immaculately. The sponge was soft, sweetness was balanced, and most importantly the cream was salted which made it super addictive.

A must try, for great execution of a classic

Meringue-super crispy top, with marshmallow, super crispy biscuits, caramel and nuts.

It tastes like snickers in terms of the taste profile, but more balanced and less sweet. Texturally very varied. Not particularly mindblowing but worth a try if you've had their signatures before

Surprisingly normal, a good chocolate cake. The sponge was soft, and the chocolate cream had the perfect texture. It's just a tad dry if you eat the entire thing without drinking anything else, but that's not really a problem

baked grated tapioca cake, enriched with coconut milk

a layer of glutinous rice, tinted with blue pea extract, and a custard enriched with fresh coconut milk and the flesh of mao shan wang durian

Got this aesthetic cake for my brother’s birthday 🎂

The cake itself is rich with a nutty pistachio flavour and the texture is dense yet moist. However, the cream is a tad salty.

If you like cakes that are rich and dense, Chalk Farm’s cakes will probably be to your liking.

When I last asked y’all lovely folks for kueh kosui recommendations, Chalk Farm came up so many times I’m like yo I have to get my hands on summa that. And my friends, thank you. Y’all are godsent. Cause this kueh kosui is THE MFKIN BOMB. That kueh itself OOOOOF it’s an absolute dream come true. Melts in your mouth omg like literally, so smooth, so silky, sooo soft I mean see how bendy that is, and I can taste the mellow earthiness of the gula melaka. I would’ve loved a more punchy hit of gula melaka, but this was acceptable for me. Unfortunately what I didn’t quite like was the shredded coconut. They’re very generous with it which I appreciate; but instead of the usual soft steamed grated coconut, Chalk Farm uses really really thick shavings of (I’m guessing) freshly toasted coconut flesh so it tastes like yknow old coconut flesh that’s really hard and tough and basically impossible to scrape off the husks? It wasn’t crunchy in a good way, overpowering the delicate kueh instead of complementing it. It was also more salty than sweet in a way that was rather jarring. That kueh though was so amazing, I’d forgo the coconut just to have it.

I've got to say this is a textbook rendition. Nothing to fault. Pandan custard particularly was rich yet not cloying However, it certainly wasn't mindblowing, nor deserve to have this price tag.

Dense and slightly oily. I've again got no idea how this deserves 10.3, not that it's bad

Update: they said "our caramel is meant to have a bitter and salty edge" well I gave them a chance and apparently this is no one off. Order this at your own discretion, you have been warned

This was a mistake. Pretty sure this is a one off cos it's so damn bad. The caramel was incredibly bitter, and not with complexity, mind you. Maybe it's better if it weren't outright burnt?

Pretty much what you expect, nothing too surprising except for the price

your favourite sweet tooth gal is back with another review from chalk farm. my friend ordered these 2 brownies and it was so amazing! a tad bit sweet and too gelat to finish but that’s why desserts are always meant for sharing (so you can eat a lot more variety). really love the nutty taste of the nutella rye brownies and the 24k karat brownie was divinely chocolatey!

really worth the hype! i wouldn’t mind paying more for such quality bakes ❤️ ordered the pistachio loaf and bailey’s chocolate cake (only available on weekends). the alcoholic bailey’s taste is definitely prominent, but compliments the rich chocolate taste. the chocolate cake itself was moist, fudgy and really one of the best cakes i’ve tried. sadly, after the delightful gastronomic experience delivered by the bailey’s chocolate cake, the pistachio loaf did not blow the mind. the pistachio taste was mild. the pistachio nuts were unexpectedly stale and soft. the salty frosting complimented the soft loaf cake. would definitely be back to try more bakes!

💸: $8.50

💬: Despite its funky name, this was just an ondeh ondeh cake - a real good one at that though 🤤👌🏻
