Unique bowl it was. Soy based sauce w plain heat, very different from normal. Wantons had a cotton-like stringy texture and there's quite a lot of lard inside? Never had anything like it.
Pork balls were good and minced pork kind of dissolves as u press on it. However the pork lard absolutely sucks, overfried and crumbly texture, not crispy at all
Their soup, with it's light sweetness and complexity from some kind of nut? was very special too and many people come for the soup version
Solid bowl of Bedok style Bak Chor Mee. Small one is $5 and additional $0.30 for take away. They packed the noodles and soup separately so the mee doesn’t get soggy.
They also sell pretty good ngoh hiang at this standalone stall.
Will be back.
It seems like you can now find more and more Bedok style Bak Chor Mee in CBD, including this one that opened at Boat Quay. They even open until 4:30am so you could enjoy supper here after partying nearby.
For the small size of $5 could give you a decent bowl. I find the taste could be much better especially the soup. But the meatballs and wanton was great.
After having this several times for lunch over the course of a few weeks, I can safely say this is the best amongst the competition in Boat Quay. Disregarding that it’s a different beast from Yan Kee or the current BK Eating House iteration, this is still superior in terms of preparation and taste.
What you’ll get is a solid bowl of chilli and lard tossed noodles of your choice(mee pok, mee kia or my favourite, mee tai mak), smothered in a blanket of pork mince. The small portion comes with 2 pork balls and 2 succulent wantons, as well as a flavourful bowl of cloudy meat broth, and as a whole, was very satisfying, especially since the noodles don’t clump together in one huge mass like Yan Kee’s.
Taste: 3.5/5
From the new Bedok Bak Chor Mee at Circular Road; a new establishment that is situated just a short distance away from Yan Kee Noodle House and The Salted Plum that specialises in serving up "Bedok-style" Bak Chor Mee. Apart from serving up Bak Chor Mee in both dry and soup options, Bedok Bak Chor Mee also serves up other sides, as well Ngoh Hiang and a rotating menu of local desserts.
Going with the Crispy Prawn Cracker, Yam Roll, Water Chestnut Cake and QQ Pork Sausage, one could tell how the ingredients are pretty fresh and fried quite well; none of the fried fritters felt overly greasy nor soaked up in oil — items were pretty crisp whilst the meatier items come with a good bite and pretty juicy. The accompanying chili was also great; a good balance of sweetness and mild spiciness that provides a contrast of flavours. Something which is great to share around the table with the Bak Chor Mee that is to be ordered here.
Dry bak chor mee.
