Custard puffs were sold out. Thus had to get their custard tarts instead. Somehow it works. The tart crust was rather Solid and crunchy. The custard is damn food as usual.
Balmoral bakery has been around for decades, this old school bakery has provided me my birthday cakes when I was a young kid in the 90s.
Balmoral has been in sunset way, way before it become a hip area it is now. Sunset way used to be an old neighbourhood with wet markets and provisions shops.
Chicken Curry Puff ($1.60) & Chicken Pie ($1.80) I felt that it was not crunchy for their pastry skin but then quite really savoury and old school taste for chicken pie filling.

Old School Bakery
The egg tart was too sweet. The Sugee cake was lacking of the expected dense.

Zooming in to some of my favourites — Balmoral bakery’s old school black forest cake gives me such nostalgia as I grew up eating their cakes & pastries in the Eighties.
And honestly, where can you get this classic cherries-filled chocolate sponge cake with whipped cream and chocolate shavings at 0.5 kilogram for S$20.00 today?

($1.80)
I really enjoy thick flavour inside rum ball and like got aftertaste feeling for rum even though I swallowed rum ball off.
($1.50)
Same as Coconut Swiss Roll. Coconut was really pan fried and fragrant aftertaste. The tart crust really crunchy and taste like old fashioned tart.
($1.70)
Same as Chocolate Swiss Roll. Coconut was really fresh and fragrant taste tbh.
($1.70)
Not that normal and modern type of cake that u have tried for past year. The cream and cake base was really thick and hard type tbh. But I felt that it really can last for outside at least 2 to 3 hours tbh. Chocolate really like milky and light sweet type likd not that bitter taste.
Their custard is pretty unique actl, it's kinda goopy and slightly sticky-ish. Hard to describe but it's not bad. Worth a try if you're in the area

Traditional bakeries like Balmoral are becoming few and far between these days, so we should really cherish them while they're still in operation🥺. We're so happy to have gotten some old-school bakes today, as it's been a really long time since we had them😋. Love the huge variety of bakes here, we were simply spoilt for choice! Wanted to try a bit of everything so we ended up with 4 boxes in the end hahaha🌚. Our favourite was the custard puff, as the pastry was fluffy and soft, and the custard filling was slightly liquidy, eggy and not too sweet🍬. They were generous with the filling as well, and we thought the pastry-to-filling ratio was good! Other pastries we recommend getting are the Chicken Samosa and Rum Ball! Cheap and good~🤩

There's one thing I super like about balmoral, are the custard puffs, the fillings are damn shiok and almost everyone I introduce this too find this damn good.
It's a taste that no other bakeries in Singapore have.
Walnut cake @ $1.40
This has got to be the best walnut cake I've ever had. Maybe cuz it's so interesting that they made it with the short crust and the bite into it is just so different from a usual cake. The taste is also excellent and the cake portion has got just the right texture.
Also got an apple pie, which they put inside a warmer and it really helps to keep the pie nice and crispy. They made it a little differently from a usual apple pie - the crust is slightly savoury and helps to balance out the sweetness from the apple. The layering of the crust is also done perfectly such that though it's airy on the inside it doesn't feel empty.
There's also a variety of swiss rolls in different sizes and flavours which is really great as I now can have bitesize swiss rolls!
Overall very value for money and will be back to try other cakes and pastries!
This old school bakery is a childhood favourite! My mom’s usual order is a box of their pineapple tarts and assorted cakes.
This is my first time getting their coco tart, and I really liked it! The coco bits were finely chopped and not overly sweet, with a good tart crust - not super buttery and heavy, but light and a good blank canvas for the filling.
The pineapple tart has strongly pineapple bits which we enjoy. The crust can be a little more snappy/crunchy.
This had a nice smell but upon eating it, the banana taste didn’t really come through. It’s not dry, and not too sweet, with a nice caramel-ly flavour at the edges. This was very light and airy, but I prefer a denser banana cake!
Tried their famous chicken pie and got a beef pie too. They were good but not as good as they were described to be. The pastry was fragrant but the fillings weren't that good. The beef was mushy and there wasn't much chicken.
Finally tried Balmoral Bakery. An old-school bakery located near Sunset Way. Decided to try their old school chicken pie. Their pies are kept in a warmer cabinet to keep them warm. Flaky pie crust with a bulging pie dome. I feel the pie is slightly on the dry side but the crust was really buttery and fragrant though. Very nostalgia.
