From its humble beginning in 1955, till it closed in June 2022, this beloved old-school stall served up homely Chinese Teochew meals daily.

Entire generations have grown up eating at this joint, run by Carol Lee and family. The wide range of painstakingly prepared dishes, numbering up to 30 daily, were tasty and affordable. No surprise that folks returned time and again.

It's the closure of such places that remind why I even began blogging - to capture and preserve memories, not just for others, but for myself.

Their plain rice porridge used to be medium thin and watery, with mild grainy sweet flavour, and always served warm.

The Garlic Yu Choy has a light crispy crunch, with a nice vegetal sweet earthy spice flavour. The Soy Braised Peanuts are lighter than elsewhere, with a firm crunch and savoury salty nutty flavour.

The Minced Pork In Black Bean & Chili Oil has a tender juicy satisfying chew, with lovely meaty savoury spicy salty earthy flavour. The Luncheon Meat Spam is thick cut and tender springy, with nice meaty salty savoury flavour.

It's with great sadness when I read that Ah Seah Teochew Porridge would be ceasing operations on 19th June due to manpower issues. This eatery is an institution, having been around for 58 years. There's a sense of homeliness and nostalgia whenever I step in, and there isn't another eatery quite like Ah Seah. The decor may not be the prettiest and the food may not be the tastiest, but the sheer number of dishes on offer (easily 40 or more) distinguishes Ah Seah from other ๐ง๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐ฃ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ stalls.ย
We dropped by for one last hurrah and ordered some popular dishes. Steamed fish may be a luxury, but it's the most popular dish here as there were only two left. (I'm broke, so didn't order the fish.) The Minced Pork, Braised Duck, Spinach, Long Beans and Braised Tofu were nothing to shout about, but we could taste the assiduousness and dedication in every bite of the simple, well-executed fare.ย
What caught the eyeย wereย the meatballs. Oddly-shaped and asymmetrical, they were the antithesis to the sleek, perfectly spherical fishballsย that are now commonplace. These meatballs looked primitive by comparison. But they were bouncy and juicy, and hand-making dozens of these everyday, in addition to preparing 40 other dishes, demands our respect.
Dining at @ahseahteochew is like visiting my grandmother's house when I was a kid. She would cook lots of dishes while everyone -- uncles, aunties, cousins -- would take turns to sit at the table for dinner. Nothing fancy, just homely, heartwarming meals with loved ones. There isn't another eatery quite like Ah Seah.

One of the popular places around Hougang for authentic and traditional Teochew porridge. We ordered simple dishes like minced pork, braised pig skin, braised tau pok, potato & luncheon meat in tomato sauce and spicy lala to pair with the comforting and plain porridge. Not the best Teochew porridge but they are one of the cheap and good ones around here ใ$18.50
(Clockwise from left) Long beans, curry chicken, braised pork belly, chilled tofu. Although I don't like Teochew porridge for its simplicity, I dislike even more its exorbitant prices. But here was relatively okay. The curry was old-school and I love old-school curry chicken. The tofu is an acquired taste.
We love to come here because it's not that crowded and easier to find parking lot.
Their asam fish, braised meat and minced pork were quite good. I would say to just skip the salted veg (kiam chye) and try other dishes.
Not the best Teochew porridge along Kovan but this could be a place for late night meal. We paid less than $20 for everything thatโs on the table so itโs definitely value for money but it does not taste as good as itโs competitors along Kovan. Itโs a choice between lesser crowd, value for money and average tasting food or crowded place with steep prices and quality food.
