The French toast at Maison Ikkoku is served either with fresh berries, or sea salt caramel. Two large pieces of toast drenched generously with sea salt caramel, topped with roasted walnuts, caramelised bananas and mascarpone cream cheese with a cinnamon-coated orange. If you like sweet desserts, this will be perfect for sharing! Photo by C G.

For good dim sum sold at coffeeshop prices, many come here for their super-flowy liu sha bao, but items such as the siew mai or har kow may not be up to restaurant standards. Also try their steamed beancurd roll and steamed carrot cake. Bear in mind it's located in an eating house, so don't expect comforts!

At just $8.80, this lunch set of 4 Xiao Long Baos, 1 bowl of noodles and a drink will leave you satisfied. The noodles come in a generous portion with 5 versions to choose from -- Noodles A and E are recommended. For supper, the steamboat buffet with unlimited XLB is crazy good value! From 10.15pm - 12.30pm, it's only $16.80 for adults.

With desserts that are not too-perfect-to-eat but just perfectly delightful, Carpenter & Cook manages to transport you to the 50s in an unpretentious, cosy way. The old benches and their authentic cutlery creates a lovely ambience for a peaceful afternoon. Don't miss out on their Passionfruit Meringue Tart- a perfect balance of sweet and tart.

While quickly becoming a coffee institution, CSHH still manages to be a cosy space. The gorgeously modified industrial-chic interior of this old hardwarestore provides the perfect setting for enjoying a good cup of coffee. If you'refeeling adventurous, give their galvanized ale a try- literally coffee beer. It's strangely good!

Be prepared to wait at Song Kee for your super bouncy fishballs and crazy fragrant her giao (fish dumplings), because according to Dixon Chan, it's "The best fishball mee pok in SG". Greedykat Scruffs agrees, describing the noodles here as "local fare that is so satisfying :9 they're generous too, with 6 balls a bowl for $3.50!"

If you've skipped dinner (gasp!) during a long workday, come into the loving embrace of Seng Kee. Their awesome Mee Sua, with its soupy herbal infusion, will bring you back to Ah Ma's kitchen. You can choose from several variations- lean pork slices, kidneys, beancurd, and even fried meesua with crab. It's not Ah Ma, but Ah Ma's probably sleeping at 3am (best not to wake her).

At this two-storey shophouse along Bukit Timah, bring a small group of friends and for a hearty brunch. Go for the 62 degree eggs benedict with smoked salmon ($22), and finish with the slighty odd but insanely delicious French Toast that comes with fried bananas, and is stuffed with chicken, spinach and mushrooms and finally smothered in strawberry-smoked maple syrup. Brunch in this brick-walled space is always a lovely affair, from the ambience to the well-executed food. Favourites include the Flan ($23), pork cheek confit with sauteed mushrooms, a perfectly poached egg, and a mountain of rocket sitting in a light pastry shell. The truffle fries are so delightful, it's worth popping by anytime you're in the neighborhood! Finish off with their decadent waffles. Photo by Jennifer Yeo
