Cafe Hopping

With desserts that are not too-perfect-to-eat but just perfectly delightful, Carpenter & Cook manages to transport you to the 50s in an unpretentious, cosy way. The old benches and their authentic cutlery creates a lovely ambience for a peaceful afternoon. Don't miss out on their Passionfruit Meringue Tart- a perfect balance of sweet and tart.

While quickly becoming a coffee institution, CSHH still manages to be a cosy space. The gorgeously modified industrial-chic interior of this old hardwarestore provides the perfect setting for enjoying a good cup of coffee. If you'refeeling adventurous, give their galvanized ale a try- literally coffee beer. It's strangely good!

At this two-storey shophouse along Bukit Timah, bring a small group of friends and for a hearty brunch. Go for the 62 degree eggs benedict with smoked salmon ($22), and finish with the slighty odd but insanely delicious French Toast that comes with fried bananas, and is stuffed with chicken, spinach and mushrooms and finally smothered in strawberry-smoked maple syrup. Brunch in this brick-walled space is always a lovely affair, from the ambience to the well-executed food. Favourites include the Flan ($23), pork cheek confit with sauteed mushrooms, a perfectly poached egg, and a mountain of rocket sitting in a light pastry shell. This new kid on the Thomson block is a lovely new space that offers simplicity at its best. Sharing a space with Crust (which takes over after 5pm), One Man Coffee serves up superb brioche French toast and Toad in the Hole eggs with bacon jam that has everyone swooning. A calming environment with the perfect mix of vintage and industrial, Lola's is a great spot for a casual brunch. Their honey paprika wings are a hit, along with their trusty eggs ben. This really hip-looking cafe shows no trace of its past; probably the only thing that is obvious was the signboard that is retained from the previous tenant. It takes over an old coffeeshop that had started here ever since the estate was around, which also used to house a rather famed Prawn Noodle stall in here. Other items such as the artwork in the cafe featuring old calendars and a weighing scale in its toilet also gives a nod to the past. Despite so, the menu is rather western, featuring salads, all-day brunch and desserts as well as coffee made using the Throwback blend by Papa Pahelta. Go for the waffles if you are here; the Buttermilk is fragrant at its best even though its not even stated in the menu, and for those interested in savoury waffles they also serve them with Fried Chicken, which is also one of their specialties.

You're going to want to head here before word gets out. As if Creamier's waffles and ice cream weren't picturesque enough, the folks behind Sunday Folks have outdone themselves. They're still serving their signature flavours such as earl grey lavender and roasted pistachio, but - wait for it - as a soft serve in handmade cones. Customize your cones with various toppings like matcha nama chocolate, gula melaka mochi and fresh fruit. Or have your soft serve atop their famous waffles if you like. This space is much roomier, but it won't take long before a queue forms.
