Along with cuts of Salmon and Swordfish Sashimi I handpicked at the counter (which was obviously amazingly fresh!!), I decided to give Fish Mart Sakuraya's Chirashi Don a try too! At $16 nett (No GST & service charge here!), it was definitely pretty decent for it's price. The Salmon, Tuna, Swordfish, Tako amongst others all came in a single slice which was a little thin, but at a modest price $16 there's nothing much I can ask for either. It was however topped with a very generous serving of Ebiko & I really appreciated that. Ordered a side of mentai roe at $3 & it went so well with my sushi rice! Fish Market Sakuraya is really an underrated Japanese joint which serves up pretty decent & fresh Japanese food at a relatively affordable price compared to other established Japanese food joints. The freshly cut sashimi here is really to rave for as reviewed in an earlier post! Come here for fresh sashimi cuts 🤤
At $9.90++ a bowl, this bowl of Chirashi from Genki definitely didn't impress when it came to my table on a cute motorised train. Looks aside, it was actually pretty worth it and I was impressed at their generosity in the portion of Ikura! It also came with a few sweet prawns, tamago, slices of Maguro and Salmon, along with one slice of my favourite swordfish 😫. The ikura just went super well with everything & I had so much Ikura even after finishing the rice haha. Portion was pretty small but at this price I really can't complain either, just load up with a few of Genki's mentai loaded aburi sushi & it'll leave you with a full tummy!
At $7, I finally tried the highly raved about Singapore Style Ramen from A Noodle Story @ Amoy St. Waited for about 15 minutes for it on an early Thursday evening. Sad to say that I don't see what's the rave about this bowl of noodle. Yes it's very well executed and presented with its lava egg, shrimp roll and torched chashu. But I just don't think it was as spectacular as everyone claims it to be. Haha #unpopularopinion But do give it a try either way, its pretty special, tastes like a pimped version of mee kia.
I honestly wasn't expecting much when I ordered this southern fried chicken at Slappy Cakes, a restaurant famous for pancakes but WOW for $17.50++ it was really pleasantly surprised! The wait for this took pretty long but I think it was well worth it. They prepared it 100% from scratch and the end product is perfect. The potatoes were cubed and fried to a golden brown, the scrambled eggs were so eggy & fluffy and milk & the chicken was fried to a crispy exterior and yet the meat inside was very tender. It was simply a 100% pleasant surprise & the crab meat(?) sauce just went so well with everything! I'd definitely go all the way back to RWS for this, and not forgetting the fun pancake making where you get a bottle of batter (8.50++) and you're free to make whatever kind of pancakes you want!
Situated underneath blocks of HDBs in Bedok, you can find a chic store with minimalist exteriors. Got the charcoal waffle with butterbeer & butterscotch with salted egg sauce and the total came up to a pretty average $15+. The butterbeer ice cream wasn't anything to rave about, it was too alcoholic-y for my liking but the butterscotch ice cream went very well with the charcoal waffle & not forgetting the star of FATCAT & their main selling point: the salted egg yolk sauce! (Which was honestly perfect for an instagram shot). The salted egg sauce went well with the ice cream & waffles but it wasn't THAAAT good. I'd still recommend east siders to visit FATCAT though, just for that instagram worthy shot.
At a low price point of only $12.80, this bowl of goodness definitely hits the spot in your tummy & pocket so well! Thick chunks of sashimi doused in Sushiro's marinade atop a bed of fluffy Japanese rice. Paired with nicely grated wasabi and not forgetting the purely blissful balls of Ikura popping in your mouth, this is really worth the 40 minute wait! The fish may not be the best of the best but at this price and with very substantial chunks of fish, I don't think anyone can complain! Really love the salmon & the ikura which goes soo well with the rice. It's definitely my new go-to Barachirashi spot just that it's a little out of the way due to its location in Thomson Plaza & sadly there's no mekajiki in the bowl haha. Do brace yourself for the wait during peak hours but hang on in the line because a yummy bowl of fish is waiting for you!
Comparable to RiRi's at Chinatown market, but the portions seem a tad smaller. This veggie pot came up to $11 for 2 people & you can choose your own ingredients so go all out with seafood and meat or go healthy with all veggies! It's up to you & though waits are equally, if not even longer than 日日's at Chinatown as they only have 1 stall in Bedok, it's still worth the wait as compared as traveling all the way to Chinatown for the easties! Singapore's really going gaga over Ma La!
Went all the way to Chinatown's market to try the much raved about Ri Ri Mala Pot. Almost every patrons at the hawker centre had a big bowl of mala goodness embossed with 日日麻辣香锅 on the bowl. And truth be told, the mala craze really lives up to it's name! The queues are long & so are the waits but I'd say it's definitely worth it! I enjoyed my pot of mala goodness to the last bit of it. My vegetarian bowl with medium spice came up to $15, and I shared it with 4 people with satiated tummies! Go for it if you don't mind long waits & have lots of time to spare! I absolutely love mala pots & I'm officially on the mala bandwagon!
Got the Pig Tail Prawn Noodles from the less popular Albert Street Prawn Noodles as I was lazy to queue for Whitley Prawn Noodles just a few stalls away. The broth was thick and flavourful, but was a bit on the salty side, which might not sit well on some people's palette. Noodles were OK, didn't really like the Ketchup mixed into my dry noodles & ended up mostly dunking it in my soup. For $5 it's a decent meal at a decent price, especially with the flavourful broth! I would definitely come back again for more if not for the substandard & rude service I got from the stall owner. I understand that customer service isn't really a given at hawker centres, but I was completely appalled at the attitude given to me by this middle aged man taking my order. He reprimanded me for not ordering correctly when he himself wasn't paying attention at ALL & told me off just because Im relatively younger than him. Seriously? Maybe that's why Whitley's queue is so much longer than their's. P.s. I was the only one queueing at Albert Steeet's while there was a queue at Whitley. Yes to the prawn broth, never going back again for the horrible attitude.
At $16.80 a bowl, Kanshoku's Dry Truffle ramen is definitely a treat for a splurgy day! Finally visited the ramen that was much raved about in 2016(?), and it was pretty decent & delightful! The truffle aroma was definitely present in the noodles which was tossed with both truffle bits and oil, topped off with TWO (boohoo) perfectly torched but definitely not filling pieces of charshu, and the noodles hugged a warm sous-vide egg which was then topped off with 3 slices of truffle! I really liked how all the flavours come together as one & complemented each other, especially after breaking the egg in the middle as it's kinda on the dry side. However, the portion was really small foe $16.80+, and I left with an unsatisfied tummy because of the small portion and the measly 2 pieces of charshu. Would recommend only if you're a small eater or have yet to try the ramen! It's more of a check of the food list for me & I probably won't be back so soon!
At $49.90++ per head, this Teppanyaki Buffet Lunch was not to be missed! Albeit the high parking charges at Goodwood Park & its location, it's definitely worth a trip to enjoy such good food! It's my 4th time here & the experience is always top notch as usual. I opted for the ala-carte buffet & the items were fried on the hot grill right in front of you a-la-minute! 😍 Service was good & the chefs would even put up a fire show for you if requested. Food items were great, my favourites being the sashimi which were so fresh & thickly sliced! Beef cubes which were made to your liking, (I love mine rare! Had it thrice, once medium, another medium rare and the last time rare, which was the best in my opinion), chicken tossed in teriyaki sauce, a simple but comforting choice! & DEFINITELY the butter grilled prawns which were oozing with cream & buttered oil like wow it was my favourite dish at Shima! 🤤 All items were grilled to perfection on the hot teppanyaki grill & the garlic rice was fried with all the yummy juices from the other food items! Expect other items like Tempura, Oysters, Shishamo, Grilled Veggies too! Though it might be a little pricey for students like myself but a treat once in awhile is necessary!! 👌🏼💯
Nangfa Kitchen...where am I even supposed to start? This humble & authentic chain Thai eatery tucked away in the heartlands really amazes me every single time! Really affordable for the quality of food you get! It's way better than commercialized (& overpriced) Thai restaurants. The Green Curry Chicken ($8) is a MUST order, the delicious coconut milky gravy was of the beet proportions, not too milky, not too spicy. Pandan Leaves Chicken ($4) was also aromatic, marinated Thai Style Curried chicken wrapped in pandan leaves! Another must order is the Tom Yum Soup, thick base, which was really spicy &nreally hit the spot for its tanginess! Other must orders for me everytime Im at Nahkon would be the Deep Fried Frish in Thai Chili, Fragrant Olive Rice & Stuffed Chicken wings! Sambal Kangkong was a miss though, $6 for a really stingy portion of veggie. Definitely way more hits than misses, head over to Nahkon to satisfy your Thai food craving without burning a hole in your pocket!
Do note that all prices are nett here and that there's no air conditioning 😅 Total bill for 5 stuffed tummies came up to only $58!
& tbh I don't really taste a difference between Nahkon & Nangfa...it pretty much tastes the same to me & considering that there were rumours going around that they actually were once business associates who eventually split up, the quality of food is great and comparable at both places. So I'd usually go for the one with a shorter queue. 😅
