Never heard of this dish before but what a treat - its har jeong gai tossed with the pickled ginger and honey, to make a coating that contrasts sharply with the crisp, savoury chicken.
This flavour of crab was given a thumbs up ππ» in the menu so we had to try. Very similar to the typical chilli crab sauce Singapore has but this was on the tangy side as opposed to the sweeter types. Nonetheless, still tastes just as great paired with crispy fried man tous. The crabs were RM128 per kg and we gladly ordered 2 crabs (total weighing about 1.2kg). The other flavour we tried was the milk one, which I didn't enjoy becos the sauce had an unusual sour taste. But I had friends who very much enjoyed that so I guess to each his/her own!
We wanted the tze char at Tong Sheng but the queue when we arrived at 6pm scared us off, with online reviews saying the waiting time would be around 2 hours. Nope. βπ» We googled for alternatives and this one was located just a 2 mins walk away, with a similarly looking cheesey bee hoon dish we wanted to try. Overall, this dish at Zhong Tai did not wow imo becos perhaps I was expecting more cheese? But it definitely seems the main focus is on the milky broth with a slightly hint of cheese infused. And anyway my personal preference is seafood-based broths vs milk-based ones. Can't compare with the one at TS though unfortunately. Good to try once but will not reorder!
Order the ginger chicken (myr 15). The caramelised chicken went surprisingly well when paired with ginger slices and century egg slices, yum yum! Once again, cheap and awesome!! Xoxo, wet tissue no have
The bitter gourd omelette (myr 8) is really cheap and good! The bitter gourd that they use here is really bitter (they probably don't pre-soak in water). I like the bitterness and crunchiness of the bitter gourd because the rest of the dishes were simply too tasty and this helps to tongue-wash. Xoxo, wet tissue no have
Order 2 medium crabs ( myr 108/ kg; 2 crabs are about 800g-1kg) done in sour and spicy sauce. The sour and spicy sauce is supposed to be their speciality sauce. Personally, I don't like the sauce because I think the crab taste don't go well with sourness. The crab are live and you can choose from their tank. But, somehow I find that the crab meat in the legs are pretty hollow and fibre of the crab meat are too fine and not meaty enough. Xoxo, wet tissue no have
