Rice portion was abit too much for the meat. Rice is the weakest link there, slightly sticky without much going on. Rather dry and hard
Ckn was tender with a good bite. Soup was umami but I fear it's more msg than anything else cos can't really taste chicken.
Here is where I disagree with most about this being quintessential chicken rice: the rest of the stuff are all unique
Instead of grated ginger this is a full on ginger sauce, it's full of chicken essence, tastes almost like soup restaurant's version but finer
Their sauce for the chicken was a good balance of sweetness and savouriness. There's an extra dimension which is not obvious, and which I have never tasted in any other chicken rice sauce
Their chili is hot, and again there's an extra aroma, I suspect it's coriander.
Overally really good stuff but the queue can be pretty insane, almost 30mins at 130pm
Tbh, Tong Fong Fatt doesn’t really need a super comprehensive review. It has always been my go-to for a no frills, delectable plate of white chicken rice.
I’m an absolute sucker for BONELESS cut chicken rice and this hawker pioneer offers a fantastic rendition of it. I guess one of their only downsides is that it might not be very popular with roasted chicken rice fans, for obvious reasons...
In my humble opinion, their Ghim Moh outlet serves the BEST tasting chicken rice, however we do urge you to check out Tong Fong Fatt’s other stalls around Singapore too.
Have seen Tong Fong Fatt around a couple of places and decided to give it a go, and it’s easy to understand why there is a constant queue in front of their stores. They do a simple unadulterated version of the chicken rice, and they do it well. The rice is nice and grainy, soup is simple, and the chicken is moist and what you would expect!
If we could taste memories, my secondary school days would undoubtedly taste of Tong Fong Fatt's chicken rice. Tender chicken slices served in a special soy-based gravy, and eaten with rice and lots and lots of chilli and garlic. *BURP*
My secondary school's campus was undergoing major renovations, so we took over the old RJC campus at Mt. Sinai for two years. Ghim Moh Food Centre was just a stone's throw away, and this fast, tasty, filling, and inexpensive option (everything a student could dream of!) quickly became my staple during those years. Save for the rare occasion where we tried to be adventurous with our meal choices, my friends and I would have this chicken rice for lunch before every CCA practice. The CCA committee even had it delivered straight to school when practices became too hectic i.e. during SYF or concert season (I was in the Chinese Orchestra!). CCA may have been pretty intense, but it infused my favourite memories with the most delicious flavours, and the fragrance of chicken oil and gravy. For that, I'll be forever thankful. #hawkerpedia
Chicken rice is a staple for many Singaporeans, but this stall takes it up a notch by offering boneless chicken. It made for a much more pleasant eating experience. The chicken was tender and the skin had a smooth, silky texture. The gravy was light, and not excessively salty. Overall, it was not too oily and quite light on the palette. The tangy chilli helped to cut through the oiliness of the dish. The best thing about it would have to be the price; $2.50 for a plate, and you could get a bigger one by paying $1.00 more. Definitely a steal, and highly recommended to anyone looking for a chicken rice fix! This was from the Kovan branch, though they have many branches throughout the island.
My current fav chicken rice.
