We also liked the ๐—œ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ ($5) for its smoothness, but the ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ ($5) could be improved because the matcha flavour was too faint. The beverages were served with homemade cookies, which was a nice touch. We preferred the butter cookies to the chocolate ones because they emitted a fabulous fragrance.

This tiny cafe is definitely worth visiting for its desserts and the watermelon cake has been placed on the top of my to-eat list.

Chanced upon a little patisserie called Sugar & Tease located in Onze, which tbh is a building most people tend to overlook. The friendly gentleman at the counter informed us the most popular item was their watermelon cake. I saw a few dozen of them displayed in the glass counter, but sadly they were all pre-ordered and none were left.ย

We settled for the ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜…๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜ ($9), which looked gorgeous. Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries adorned the tart, making it look like a tiny fruit garden. The juicy fruits provided a nice textural contrast to the firm tart shell, and we found this dessert immaculate.ย

Refreshing and well-constructed, the cake was a delightful interplay of crunchy seedless watermelon, light cream, and moist fluffy sponge fragranced with subtle rose flavour.

The thick slab of watermelon, and additional topping of watermelon tipped the balance off slightly in feeling more of fruits with a side of cake rather than an integrated cake. Thicker sponge:watermelon ratio would have likely done the trick. If comparing to the OG, also found that more almond dacquoise and topping of pistachio nuts would have enhanced the nuttiness to contrast with the berries. Overall, solid version of the original @blackstarpastry cake that came short in certain areas but still enjoyable in its own right.

They kindly offered us their cookies to sample and both the dark chocolate sea salt and pecan cookie were light and airy, crisp, and highly addictive.

Located within Onze @ Tanjong Pagar, Sugar & Tease was previously a patisserie with an online presence until they had opened their physical shop space fairly recently โ€” occupying a unit that faces the main road, the cafe is decked in a clean and minimalistic theme with the use of white elements in its furniture and fittings. Dine-in space is relatively limited here, with two tables with bench seating that lines along the windows. For walk-ins, Sugar & Tease serves up sliced cakes, tarts, pound cakes and even specialty coffee to go along with the cakes, just to name a few.

Of the items in the display chiller, the Pistachio Musk Melon Tart is one that stood out to me the most โ€” perhaps it might be how the musk melon seem like a โ€œpremiumโ€ product, or that the flavour combination is just something that seemed rather unique; that being said, the item is also considerably pricey given its price point at $12. Taking a first slice into the tart, the tart base slices down fairly neatly; almost cookie-like and doesnโ€™t crumble down into a mess โ€” pretty easy to have. The scoops of muskmelon were fresh and juicy, and comes with a light sweetness; there isnโ€™t that usually โ€œsiapโ€ aftertaste that one would sometimes associate with similar melons (i.e. honeydew). That being said, the juices of the muskmelon does mask off quite a bit of the flavours of the pistachio pastry cream that sits beneath the balls of scooped muskmelon. When it does get prominent enough though, it does provide a slight hint of saltish nuttiness that actually provides for a rather unique sweet-savoury note with the muskmelon that was actually pretty appealing โ€” a rather interesting note I would say.

It is pretty evident from its setup that Sugar & Tease is an establishment that is run by folks who care about intricacies with the desserts that they serve โ€” a place where one can feel the heart and soul living in the products that they attempt to put out. Whilst not all the items are quite as adventurous as the Pistachio Musk Melon Tart, there seems to be a care or detail from the flavours to the appearance. Whilst no doubt that the balance for the Pistachio Musk Melon Tart was a tad off, it is needless to say how this was great attempt and one that showcases what they have to offer โ€” just probably need a bit of refining to reach perfection. Given itโ€™s relatively hidden location in Tanjong Pagar, Sugar & Tease is somewhere that I would hit looking for a serene and tranquil cafe that is humble and earnest, serving thoughtful cakes and bakes in the heart of Central Business District.
