Meat with Fries (Chicken) Checked out the new Doner Kebab Turkish at The Arcade โ occupying the ground level of where the former Hanโs outlet was within the building, it turns out that Doner Kebab Turkish is not a new name in the F&B scene; the brand had previously established its presence when they were located within the FM Foodmaster coffeeshop at the Sheng Shiong Supermarket located along Jalan Bahar. It then subsequently moved to another coffeeshop โ this time round at Blk 182 Woodlands Street 13, before its current move to its current premises at The Arcade. Occupying a mid-sized shop space here, there seems to be more space that is dedicated to the food preparation as opposed to the space for dine-in. Much of the layout of the store has remained the same ever since its days as Hanโs โ it also seem that most of the furniture and fittings were also retained from that of the former tenant as well; the red ceilings and cupboards, along with the white tables and red stools were all the same furniture used in Hanโs previously, though remains pretty much on-point to the theme of Doner Kebab Turkish. Being a one-man show during the day of our visit, they were serving up Kebabs Wrap, Meat on Rice, Meat on Salad and Meat on Fries โ they do seem to have the intention to also serve Pide (i.e. Turkish Style Pizza) and Tombik Pizza in the future as well. Those looking for sides to share across the table can opt for items such as French Fries, Cheese Fries and Garlic Bread.
Visiting Doner Kebab Turkish for lunch on a weekday, we found ourselves going for the Meat on Fries โ the Meat on Fries at Doner Kebab Turkish comes in four different variations; Chicken, Lamb, Mix (i.e. chicken and lamb), and Falafel. We found ourselves opting for the Chicken variation โ patrons also have the choice to opt for three different sauces; we opted for the Garlic Mayonnaise (i.e. aioli), Sweet Chili and Honey Mustard for our order. It is noted that the Meat on Fries also comes with salad on the side, while we were also asked if we would like to have our order come with Plain Yogurt (which we also went for). Digging into the meat on the plate, we liked how Doner Kebab Turkish serves up their chicken really moist and tender shaved from the kebab grill. The meat were lightly flavoured on its own, but we really liked how the meat was done to the right texture โ still juicy without needing much effort to chew. The mix of sauces we had opted for all went really well with the meat too โ the garlic mayonnaise helps to add a bit of creaminess that gels everything on the plate together, whilst the sweet chili provides a tinge of sweetness and a light kick of spiciness similar to that of Thai-style sweet chili sauce; the honey mustard providing a slightly earthy note to balance things off. The fries that accompanied the meat were also decently executed โ despite them having turned a little soggy from the mix of sauces drizzled over the top, we liked how the fries were crisp, not particularly greasy, and suitably seasoned with salt for flavour. The salad came with a mix of pickles, purple slaw, tomato and raw onions โ each coming with their own refreshing crunch or chew; some tangy, whilst others come with a sweetness or even a zingy note, all that whilst balancing out the heavier elements such as the meat and the fries on the plate.
It was pretty unfortunate that we had never given Doner Kebab Turkish a try when they were still located within the coffeeshop at Blk 182 Woodlands Street 13 โ we were actually pretty impressed by the quality of the meats that they have to offer here, and we would probably be satisfied to make a couple of revisits considering how it would be reasonably close to us as well. Given the commonality of the items in the menu with that of what A-MOR Turkish Kebab (i.e. the former Turkish Atas Kebab at Fortune Centre โ it has now since been re-branded as Turkish Mr Doner Kebab under a different management) has to offer, it is inevitable for one to draw comparisons between Doner Kebab Turkish and A-MOR Turkish Kebab in terms of quality. They were pretty much a close call โ some may prefer the meats from Doner Kebab Turkish considering how juicy and tender the meats are, though there would also be folks whom prefer A-MOR Turkish Kebab for how their meats seem to be slightly more flavoursome overall; there are also more variety dishes such as that of Pesto Pasta to pair up with that meats at A-MOR Turkish Kebab. That being said, it does seem that Doner Kebab Turkish would serve the office crowds well โ it does seem that Kebabs are often an easy grab for a takeaway lunch for office workers, and that they are now strategically located in the Central Business District to cater to such office folk; prices are also rather reasonable hovering around $10 to $14 for a main here for the type of cuisine they are serving. We do look forward to Doner Kebab Turkish expanding their selection of food soon as they ease into their operations with more staff behind the counter; definitely a lunch option for me to consider when the cravings for kebab kicks in hard!
