Sengkang has rarely seen itself being in the middle all of the action that is happening within the local F&B scene — that being said, there are some pretty unique stalls that open in the various coffeeshops situated in the neighbourhood once in a while. Was tipped off by @raineraineeataway about this new pizza and gelato stall named Pizzato that had recently opened in the Kopitiam Corner coffeeshop at Blk 308 Anchorvale Road; the coffeeshop being located just opposite Tongkang LRT Station on the Sengkang LRT Line. Pizzato occupies a stall unit that is located right beside the Kopi Kiosk (i.e. drinks stall) at the coffeeshop — the coffeeshop also houses other stalls such as that of an outlet of Pandan Gardens Fishball Noodles (PGFN) as well. It is not difficult to locate Pizzato in the coffeeshop; Pizzato’s bright pink signboards are pretty attention-grabbing — the logo comprising of a pizza that sits atop a waffle cone with one slice of the pizza being in red and positioned slightly offset from the entire pizza. It is however noted that the signboard of Pizzato also mentions the brand being “made possible by thatsmypizza and SWIRLIES” — the former being that of the stall at Bukit Timah Food Centre serving up pizzas (also an establishment which we had visited some time back), while SWIRLIES is an online-based hand-crafted plant-based gelato business that is also founded by the founder of Pizzato. As the logo and namesake of Pizzato suggests, Pizzato serves up pizza and gelato; the former being available only during lunch to dinner service from 12 noon to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm respectively, while gelato is being served up all-day.

Glancing through the menu on the various pizza flavours that are available at Pizzato, we did find Pizzato’s offerings really similar to that of thatsmypizza’s — whilst the range of flavours available are smaller, those whom are familiar with thatsmypizza would find some familiar flavours such as that of the Rosemary Garlic Butter and the Applewood Bacon on the menu of Pizzato. Considering that we have had the Applewood Bacon Pizza at thatsmypizza previously, we decided to go for the Pepperoni Pizza during our visit made to Pizzato on a weekend dinner service. Perhaps the stall is still rather new and relatively unknown when we made our visit to Pizzato; there was not much of a wait involved with our food order and we were paged to collect our order in less than 10mins, being also the only ones whom have ordered from the stall during that time period. All pizzas come in the size of a 10” pie; best to be shared amongst two pax. While the menu board does not describe what goes into the pizzas here, their website mentions that the ingredients that go towards the making of their pizza dough comprises of Italian extra virgin olive oil, Italian 00 flour and Sea Salt, while the Pepperoni Pizza comprises of elements such as tomato base, mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, pepperoni, and shaved parmesan. thatsmypizza is pretty known for their long fermented, hand-stretched pizza dough and we are glad that the folks at Pizzato stuck to doing the same — we did feel that the pizza crust at Pizzato comes a wee bit thicker with more bite at Pizzato than at thatsmypizza, but the chewier and thicker crust was still pretty easy on the stomach and goes with the “reduce bloating” claim that Pizzato mentions about their pizza dough on their website. The Pepperoni Pizza is otherwise a rather conventional pizza that is a crowd pleaser; gooey and stringy melted mozzarella that comes with that cheese pull, all atop a bright and tangy tomato-based sauce and savoury slices of pepperoni for the salt-ish note typical of cured meat, there is nothing not to love about the Pepperoni Pizza here. Needless to say, the Pepperoni Pizza was an easy eat that didn’t feel particularly jelat.

Having only tried one of the few pizzas that Pizzato has to offer, we must say that Pizzato does really remind us of our experience at thatsmypizza rather closely — whilst both establishments are somewhat associated with one another, there is also some resemblance on how both establishments operate. Artisanal pizza stalls such as thatsmypizza are a rare find within hawker centres and coffeeshops, and Pizzato is just that — pretty much the same as thatsmypizza; there is also much likeness in their pizza crusts even though there are very slight differences in the way the final product, but we appreciate how Pizzato has managed to achieve pretty much the same consistency where they had made their pizzas feel particularly easy to have on the stomach as well. Apart from the Pepperoni Pizza, we had also given the range of SWIRLIE’s gelato available at Pizzato a try; opting for the Oolong Osmanthus and the Pulut Hitam flavours, the former was particularly impressive — there are many places that have jumped onto the bandwagon of serving up such flavours but the Oolong Osmanthus here has very defined notes of tea from the Oolong, as well as a prominent floral note coming from the Osmanthus that packs quite a punch. The Pulut Hitam was also right on-point; a slightly more mellow flavour as compared to the Oolong Osmanthus, the Pulut Hitam comes with noticeable flavours of black glutinous rice with nibs of black glutinous rice for a bit of chew — adds on to the texture, whilst also well-rounded with notes of coconut milk. With prices of the pizzas being in between $16 to $20, the pizza offerings can be said as pretty affordable especially when shared amongst two pax; the gelato is also pretty wallet-friendly with all flavours going at $4 a scoop — a $1 top-up applies if one were to opt for their gelato to come with a waffle cone. Pizzato is a rare find within Sengkang; a little bit of a shame that it is located somewhere deeper in the heartlands but it is still relatively convenient to get to with the Sengkang LRT Line — a spot worth making the trip for.
