My favourite three items from Mei Heong Yuen!
-Mango Roll ($5): Coconut jelly wrapping fresh mango slices
-Yam Paste ($4.20): Comes with gingko and pumpkin too
-Colour Cakes ($3.90): Tri-colour platter of pumpkin kueh, yam kueh and carrot cake! My favourite of the three is the pumpkin kueh! The heebeehiam chilli is very spicy!
FYI - Prices have risen to $7.50 for this. Portion was generous and just nice for 2. Bottle of gula melaka provided to add as much sauce as you prefer as well. The snow ice came with red beans, chendol (green jelly), grass jelly and clear jelly (seems to have replaced the attap seeds?). Texture of the snow ice was also good, but slightly bland without the addition of the gula melaka. More worth it than getting a bingsu at other places, but I think the snow ice at Ji De Chi leaves a stronger impression.
One of our favourite snow ice flavour here. The snow ice is blended with rich coconut milk and you get to decide how much gula melaka to add. Side ingredients also include generous amount of red beans, 2 attap seeds, grass jelly, aiyu and of cos not forgetting the authentic pandan flavoured cendol jelly. Most places sell those bright green fake cendol jelly which we absolutely dislike unlike here. Portion is just nice for 2 to share.
I liked the tang yuan as usual- soft, chewy, and full of filling. I don’t really like ginger, but my friends really liked the ginger soup. The mild pudding was interesting, although not my thing. It tasted quite eggy, with a hint of ginger, and had a consistency of a chawamushi, but sweet. The sesame and almond shaved ice was so so! Still like the almond, walnut and sesame paste the best from here, so I dabaoed some back for my parents and siblings.
Sesame x Almond
Since when is this served like that. And I don’t expect perfectly halved liquids. But how do I taste it separately if it’s like that?? :(
I love that the almond is silky without any powdery or cockroach repellent finish to it. But I only had maybe 3 bites worth of it?
And I couldn’t taste the bright perky sesame aroma!
